By Ed Biggs in Music / Festivals on 12 September 2018

Prosecutors for the Los Angeles County District Attorney have declined to go further with the case because it has exceeded the statute of limitations.

Backstreet Boys singer Nick Carter has learned that he will not face criminal charges over an allegation of sexual assault in 2003, after the case was thrown out by prosecutors for being over the statute of limitations.

Melissa Schuman, 33, formerly of the girl band Dream, accused Carter earlier this year raping her back in 2003. In February 2018, she waived her right to anonymity by writing a blog detailing the alleged incident, having been inspired to do so by another woman who made a similar allegation against Carter at the end of 2017.

Schuman said she was 18, and a virgin, at the time of the alleged attack, which she claimed took place after she had recorded a duet with Carter.

Melissa Schuman, who alleges that former Backstreet Boys star Carter assaulted her in 2003, filed a police report in February this year.

An allegation of rape made against former Backstreet Boys star Nick Carter is being reviewed by prosecutors.

Police had confirmed back in February this year that an unnamed woman had accused Carter of sexually assaulting her back in 2003, an allegation that the now 38 year old singer denies. However, former teen star Melissa Schuman tweeted soon afterwards that she had filed a police report.

In a blog post published in November 2017, the actress and singer had previously accused Carter of raping her when she was 18 back in 2003 when they were working together. Claiming she was “forced to engage in an act against my will”, the 33 year old alleged that Carter forced her to perform oral sex on him before he assaulted her.

Santa Monica Police Department confirmed that they received a complaint filed against Carter on Wednesday (February 7th), stemming from an alleged sexual misconduct incident dating back more than 15 years.

He has denied claims that he raped the singer-actress when she was 18.

Nick Carter has been forced to deny claims made by a former popstar that he sexually assaulted her when they met. Melissa Schuman made the accusation in a blog post this month, insisting that she wasn't able to come forward earlier due to legal costs she would incur.

The 33-year-old former Dream star wrote an article about her alleged experience when she was 18 in disturbing detail. Lively and personal but never quite breaking the surface, this documentary about the boy band phenomenon traces both their 20-year anniversary project as well as their journey to the top and back. It's packed with terrific material that fans will love, and it explores some darker sides of the bandmates' lives, but it skims over any difficult aspects of their experience together. Still, they are energetic and ready for the challenge of taking the world by storm all over again.

To prepare for their 20th anniversary tour in 2013, Backstreet Boys A.J. McLean, Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough, Kevin Richardson and Nick Carter travel to London to record a new album outside the limelight. Back in America, they also revisit their hometowns in Florida and Kentucky, meeting the teachers who inspired them, family members and old friends. But preparing to tour is a much more challenging prospect, as they try to get fit enough to do the old dance routines. And Brian is having a mental struggle that's affecting both his voice and his physicality. This brings up old tensions between them, even as they know that they can never perform without all five of them on stage.

The American boyband had their biggest career peak in 1999, but it wasn't long before they became another forgotten about boyband. They seemed to become an overnight hit in the UK and Europe, and soon they stormed their own nation. However, the success was blighted by lawsuits against their manager Lou Pearlman, who allegedly stole a large proportion of the band's earnings, not to mention problems with Jive Records, Nick Carter's desire to pursue a solo career, Kevin Richardson's departure and A.J. McLean's drug abuse confession.

In the late 90's and early 00's, The Backstreet Boys were the most powerful boy band in the world. After discovering that they had not been particularly popular in the US, the band travelled overseas and became a phenomenon in Europe. But the European scene was not enough for the American band, and they had to crack the US. With a career spanning years of highs and lows, The Backstreet Boys made their way from nothing, to Europe, to worldwide sensation. But what does that sort of strain does that success put on otherwise ordinary people? And just how does anybody overcome it?

'Backstreet Boys: Show 'Em What You're Made Of' is an upcoming documentary about the much loved boy band from documentary director Stephen Kijak. The film was set in motion when the band decided to meet in London in 2012 to work on a new album, yet they decided that they wanted to make a movie instead, telling the story of their band and its success. The band contributed all the music to the film, with a release date set for 30th January, 2015 in the US, and a worldwide release date of 26th February, 2015.
