The 12th Doctor bowed out on Christmas Day - replaced by the series' first female incarnation of the character

The festive period is a much-anticipated period for most people but this Christmas Day was more important for Doctor Who fans than most: after Peter Capaldi’s 12th Doctor regenerated into a woman. Jodie Whittaker became the first female Doctor - and the 13th overall - but one fan in particular was concerned about the regeneration process and wrote to Capaldi to tell him his fears.

Paddington 2 Review

Extraordinary

The first Paddington movie in 2014 is already such a beloved classic that it's hard to believe that this sequel actually tops it. Writer-director Paul King and his cast are back with their whimsical approach, combining silly comedy with surreally deranged touches that bring these people to life in ways that are both hilarious and deeply endearing. And this time, the plot feels more developed and the humour even funnier.

We catch up with Paddington (voiced by Ben Whishaw) as he's now a fixture in his Notting Hill neighbourhood. With his Aunt Lucy's 100th birthday approaching, he wants to give her the hand-made pop-up book of London landmarks he discovers in Gruber's (Jim Broadbent) second-hand shop and starts working odd jobs to save up to buy it. What he doesn't know is that a neighbour, washed-up actor Phoenix (Hugh Grant), knows that the book is a map to a hidden treasure. When Phoenix steals it and frames him, Paddington's adoptive family (Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Madeleine Harris, Samuel Joslin and Julie Walters) launch a plan to clear his name.

The former Tardis traveller suggested a female Doctor Who would mean boys no longer had a role model

Like it or loathe it, the latest Doctor Who incarnation is a woman and has got a lot of people talking - including previous actors who stepped inside the Tardis at some point during its run.

Nobody complained when The Master returned as Missy; why would you when she was being portrayed by the indomitable Michelle Gomez? So perhaps it's time sexist 'Doctor Who' fans out there afforded Jodie Whittaker that same courtesy. After all, Peter Capaldi has no doubts that she will be a memorable incarnation of this timeless Time-Lord.

Episode 3 sees 'Doctor Who' challenge ideas about race in honour of Bill.

The third episode of 'Doctor Who' series 10 is coming this weekend, and with it some very serious themes regarding race and the 'whitewashing' of history. Previous episodes have already touched on LGBT issues and the dangers of technological advancements, but this could be the most important episode yet.

Doctor Who’ star Peter Capaldi has spoken in harsh terms about the state of gender equality in the entertainment industry, describing the relative depiction of male and female characters as “ridiculous”.

Capaldi, 57, recently won praise from female fans of the BBC sci-fi series when he insisted that it would be “creepy” if any sexual element were to be added to the on-screen relationship between the Doctor and his current, much younger assistant, Clara, played by Jenna Coleman.
