Maggie Gyllenhaal (born Margaret Ruth Gyllenhaal, 16.11.1977) Maggie Gyllenhaal is an American film actress.
Childhood: Maggie Gyllenhaal was born to Stephen and Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal in New York. Her father is a film director and her mother is a screenwriter. Her brother, Jake Gyllenhaal is also an actor (both brother and sister appeared in the cult classic Donnie Darko. Stephen and Naomi divorced in 2008, having been married for over 30 years.
Maggie Gyllenhaal studied at Harvard-Westlake prep school. After graduating, she moved to New York, where she studied literature and Eastern religions at Columbia University.
Gyllenhaal also studied at London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
Acting Career: Maggie Gyllenhaal's introduction into feature film acting came in the early 1990s, when she appeared in three films directed by her father. The first was 1992's Waterland, starring Jeremy Irons, Ethan Hawke and Sinéad Cusack. Second was A Dangerous Woman, with Debra Winger and Laurie Metcalfe. The third was Homegrown, which also starred her brother, as well as Billy Bob Thornton and Hank Azaria.
Gyllenhaal's stage debut came in 2000, when she appeared in the Berkeley Repertory Theatre's production of Closer, by Patrick Marber. Since then she has also appeared in The Tempest, Antony and Cleopatra and No Exit.
In 2000, Maggie Gyllenhaal landed a supporting role in Cecil B. Demented, a darkly comic cult film, starring Melanie Griffith, Stephen Dorff and Alicia Witt. The following year, she had another supporting role in Riding in Cars With Boys, starring Drew Barrymore and Brittany Murphy.
A pivotal role for Gylenhaal also came in 2001, when she played her brother's on-screen sister win Donnie Darko. The film, which gradually became an underground hit, also featured Drew Barrymore, Patrick Swayze and Noah Wyle.
Maggie Gyllenhaal's breakthrough role came in 2002, with the release of Secretary, in which she took a lead role opposite James Spader. Her performance earned her her first Golden Globe nomination.
Gyllenhaal's next performance was a supporting role in Adaptation. Starring Nicolas Cage, Adaptation tells the story of the screenwriter Charlie Kaufman and his struggle to film an adaptation of The Orchid Thief. Later on in 2002, Gyllenhaal appeared in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. The film benefitted from an all-star cast, which featured Drew Barrymore, Sam Rockwell, Julia Roberts and George Clooney. The film was a huge success and grossed over $33 million across the globe.
2003 saw Maggie Gyllenhaal working with Julia Roberts in Mona Lisa Smile. Most film critics were unimpressed with the film. Gyllenhaal followed Mona Lisa Smile with a number of smaller independent films. The first was Casa de los Babys, in which she shared screen time with Marcia Gay Harden and Daryl Hannah. The second was Criminal, in 2004, with John C Reilly and Diego Luna. Later that year, she starred in the HBO movie, Strip Search.
In 2005, Maggie Gyllenhaal appeared in Happy Endings, a comedy-drama with Jason Ritter and Tom Arnold. The following year was a busy one for Maggie Gyllenhaal, when she appeared in no fewer than five feature length movies. Trust the Man starred Billy Crudup, David Duchovny and Julianne Moore. Stranger than Fiction starred Will Ferrell, Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson, Monster House was a CGI film, featuring voices from Steve Buscemi and Kathleen Turner, Oliver Stone's World Trade Centre featured Nicolas Cage, Maria Bello and Stephen Dorff. Finally Sherrybaby saw Gyllenhaal in the lead role, playing a drug addict recently released from prison and trying to patch her life together.
In The Dark Knight (2008), Maggie Gyllenhaal replaced Katie Holmes as Rachel Dawes, Assistant District Attorney. The Dark Knight, directed by Christopher Nolan, was released after Heath Ledger's death and also starred Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Gary Oldman.
In early 2010, it was announced that Maggie Gyllenhaal had received an Oscar nomination for her role in Crazy Heart a musical drama starring Jeff Bridges. Bridges also landed an Oscar nomination for his own performance.
Personal Life: Maggie Gyllenhaal has been in a relationship with the actor Peter Sarsgaard since 2002. The have a daughter, Romana, born in 2006. Maggie and Peter married in 2009 in Brindisi, Italy.

Maggie Gyllenhaal is getting seriously confused about why everyone has kept asking about Taylor Swift's scarf for the last five years. She spoke about this weirdness with Andy Cohen in an interview this week, admitting that she was unaware about the situation regarding the lyrics in Taylor's 2012 song 'All Too Well'.
During her appearance on 'Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen' last night (September 13th 2017), she was asked about whether she did indeed still have Taylor Swift's scarf in her drawer as the latter's lyrics to 'All Too Well' suggest; a song that was allegedly written about her brief relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal back in 2010.

List Of Emmy Presenters Includes Amy Poehler, Maggie Gyllenhaal And Terrence Howard

Six names were revealed on Tuesday, with more to come before the end of the week.
The Television Academy has revealed the first tranche of stars who will present awards at this year’s Primetime Emmys ceremony, including actress and comedienne Amy Poehler and ABC talk show host Jimmy Kimmel.
The list, revealed on Tuesday (September 8th), includes a number of past and present nominees. Taraji P. Henson, who is nominated for lead actress in a drama for her role in ‘Empire’, is presenting a statuette, as is her co-star Terrence Howard. Maggie Gyllenhaal, who received a nod for lead actress in a limited series or movie for ‘The Honourable Woman’, will also present an award.

Dormer, who plays Margaery Tyrell in 'Game of Thrones', reckons that men and women are both under scrutiny for their physical appearance.
‘Game Of Thrones’ star Natalie Dormer has spoken out in defence of the movie and TV industry over claims about the objectification of women, claiming that men are just as likely to be under scrutiny for their age and physical appearance.
Dormer, who plays Margaery Tyrell in the massively popular HBO fantasy drama, has told the Radio Times in a new interview that the visual nature of television and film inevitably means that both sexes will be under the microscope when it comes to their looks.

Maggie Gyllenhaal, in a recent interview, claimed ageism is still rife in Hollywood.
Maggie Gyllenhaal was told 37 was too old to play the lover of a 55-year-old male character. The Honourable Woman actress was turned down for a part in a film because she was considered past her prime, according to one film's casting executives. Gyllenhaal described the humiliation and anger she felt after receiving such poor treatment and, in a recent interview, called the casting community, and Hollywood at large, out on their ageism and hypocrisy.

Frank is an eccentric musician who refuses to be seen without the giant paper mache cartoon head he wears. As he embarks on a pursuit of fame and fortune, he enlists an aspiring artist named Jon to join his band Soronprfbs. Joined by Frank's short-tempered theremin player Clara and his manager Don, the band move to Ireland where they set out to record their debut album. Jon goes about getting the band's videos all over the internet, in a bid to land the most serious gig of their lives: South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas. But tension starts to arise as Frank's relentlessly mysterious persona gets increasingly more annoying, and he himself appears to be starting to lose his own head.

Excellent
While this comedy-drama is sometimes wilfully absurd, it's also exhilarating cinema, telling its story with conflicting amounts of warm emotion and prickly abrasiveness. Irish filmmaker Lenny Abrahamson (What Richard Did) is known for keeping his audience on its toes, shifting moods and navigating sharp plot turns. And while it takes a while to get into the rhythms of this movie, it ultimately wins us over entirely.
Loosely based on the true story of English musician Chris Sievey (aka Frank Sidebottom), the film centres on the art-punk band Soronprfbs, which is fronted by Frank (Michael Fassbender), who wears a gigantic papier-mache head both on and off stage. While touring in Britain, he recruits the nerdy aspiring musician Jon (Domhnall Gleeson) to join the band for a gig in Ireland and then stick around to write and record the next album. This means that Jon must figure out how to relate to the bandmates, all of whom seem to have serious issues. Frank's girlfriend is the freaky noisemaker Clara (Maggie Gyllenhaal), and there's also hapless manager Don (Scoot McNairy) and opinionated but aloof musicians Baraque and Nana (Francois Civil and Carla Azar).
Abrahamson lets the film play out in the same utterly bonkers style as Soronprfbs' chaotic songs: veering from subtle harmony to soaring emotion to pure chaos. And through it all there's a remarkably resonant centre as we take this journey alongside Jon, who is played by Gleeson like the obnoxious little brother we can't help but love. Meanwhile, Fassbender delivers a remarkably soulful performance from within that big head, using his voice and body to add layers of intriguing depth. And Gyllenhaal continually surprises by undermining her intensely scary character with unexpected expressions of raw feeling.

The Frank Sidebottom-inspired 'Frank' is opening Sundance London 2014.
After winning a prestigious award or starring in a blockbuster, many actors never look back to their humble, low-budget, indie film beginnings. Thankfully, Michael Fassbender is not one to be so chronically short-sighted and takes centre-stage in Lenny Abrahamson's marvellous, off-beat and quirky new movie, Frank.
Inspired by the life of masked musician and comedian Frank Sidebottom and the details written about him in screenwriter Jon Ronson's memoir, Frank is a fictional story that follows the journey of the world's most peculiar band from the rehearsal room to the big festival stage. Fassbender ('12 Years a Slave') is transformed into an enigmatic musician who insists on constantly wearing a giant, cartoon-like papier-maché head, even off-duty.

Michael Fassbender's 'Frank' To Lead Sundance London: Prepare For This Surreal And Hilarious Indie Flick

Fassbender stars as the titular masked musician in this Frank Sidebottom-inspired movie.
Sundance London 2014 will play host to many independent movies, but perhaps none so eagerly anticipated and talked about as Leonard Abrahamson's Frank, inspired by the life of frontman and comic personality, Frank Sidebottom. Frank will get its UK premiere on the festival's opening night on April 25 following its first screening at Sundance in Utah back in January.
Michael Fassbender ('12 Years A Slave,' 'Shame') plays the titular masked musician and bandleader who wears a giant papier mache head throughout the film, which follows his band on their trip to playing the South by Southwest festival. Maggie Gyllenhaal and Domhnall Gleeson also star in the film as members of Frank's avant-garde pop band.

New Roland Emmerich political thriller White House Down gets released in the UK and USA tomorrow (28th June) but it is worth going to see?
After premiering on the 25th of June, Roland Emmerich's new movie White House Down is set for cinema release. The film stars Channing Tatum (Magic Mike), Jamie Foxx (Django Unchained) and Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Dark Knight) in a high-paced topical thriller. The director who brought you the White House's alien destruction in Independence Day is back to blow up the president's house once again - but this time it's terrorists.
The film is led by Channing Tatum who plays divorced father and USCP officer John Cale who after being rejected from the secret service, tries to make it up to his idolizing young daughter by joining her on a tour of the White House. They picked the wrong day for sightseeing however, as terrorists begin to bomb the White House causing some serious devastation. It's now up to Cale to protect his daughter and President Sawyer (Foxx) as they try to escape.
