Why Were Jennifer Lawrence And Amy Adams Paid Less Than Their Male Co-Stars?

Jennifer Lawrence Amy Adams Bradley Cooper Christian Bale Jeremy Renner

The confidential files just keep on leaking from Sony and the latest batch has ignited some gender-related controversy. Basically, after some financial info was leaked, it was revealed that Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams (whose names you may recognize from, well, every headline this year,) were paid significantly less than their male co-stars for their work in the Oscar-winning film American Hustle.

Jennifer LawrenceAmy Adams
It seems like for Lawrence [l] and Adams [r], the pay gap is still a reality.

Aah, pay gap, how we’ve missed you. Well, not really, because the pay gap never went anywhere, not even within the film industry apparently. The good folks over at The Daily Beast have unearthed a message from a message sent from Andrew Gumpert, President of Business Affairs and Administration for Columbia Pictures to Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and Doug Belgrad, President of SPE Motion Picture Group on December 5, 2013, confirming that Adams and Lawrence received roughly 7% of the film’s talent budget each. Meanwhile, co-stars Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner and Christian Bale got... get ready for this... 9% each. I’m no math expert here, but I’m pretty sure that doesn’t even come out to the often cited statistic of 81 cents to a dollar.

Amy Adams Explains Unusually Humble Role In Tim Burton's 'Big Eyes'

Amy Adams Tim Burton Christoph Waltz

Amy Adams has taken an unexpected turn in her acting career, as she appears in the role of modest and infamously defrauded painter Margaret Keane in Tim Burton's forthcoming biographical drama 'Big Eyes'.

Amy Adams and Margaret Keane
Amy Adams meets the real Margaret Keane

It seems that Amy Adams has been displaying a string of hugely ambitious and massively extroverted characters in recent years: from dedicated cult leader Peggy Dodd in 'The Master' and drug-taking Beat Generationer Joan Vollmer in 'On The Road, to professional con-artist Sydney Prosser in 'American Hustle' and, of course, high-flying journalist Lois Lane in 'Man Of Steel'. Adams had been taking a serious interest in strong-willed female figures, and admits she was 'at a time where I wanted to play really confident characters'.

The pair marry and have a child named Susan, but things take a dramatic turn when Walter starts selling the paintings under his own name, claiming that art by women doesn't sell as well. While revelling in their luxury, Margaret starts to feel uneasy - despite her apparent dreams of success coming true. She decides enough is enough and takes Walter to court, insisting that she is the true creator of every single Big Eye painting. He's prepared to fight back, but just how far is she willing to go to prove the truth?

Amy Adams To Star In Long-Awaited Janis Joplin Biopic With "Dallas Buyers Club" Helmer Possibly Directing

Amy Adams Janis Joplin Jean-marc Vallee Lee Daniels Renee Zellweger

It’s been a long time coming (so long, in fact, that the whole thing became a running joke on the late 30 Rock), but the Janis Joplin biopic starring Amy Adams is finally about to become a real thing. Get It While You Can is set to film in the second half of 2015 in Los Angeles and San Fran.

Amy Adams
Amy Adams to play Janis Joplin? Well, it's not Jenna Maroney, but good enough.

Now, biopics can be really hit-and-miss as we’ve seen in the past year, but something that works in this one’s favour is the directing choice – Get It While You Can could be helmed by Dallas Buyers Club director Jean-Marc Vallée. Vallee is currently in talks to direct the flick, but it’s been a long winding road getting to this point. Back in 2013, Lee Daniels was slated to direct the flick. Over the years, has had Fernando Meirelles and Catherine Hardwicke attached as directors, Renee Zellweger as star and Temple Hill as producers.

With Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman all making solid appearances in 2016's 'Batman v Superman' movie, we can't help but wonder who else will be joining the Justice League. Right now, our bets are on Scoot McNairy as The Flash.

Scoot McNairy to play The Flash?

The casting announcements for Zack Snyder's 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' have been both thoroughly exciting and extremely surprising. Of course, we knew Henry Cavill would return as the Man of Steel, we spent hours pondering who could play Wonder Woman before Gal Gadot was chosen and we were pleased on the announcement of Ben Affleck taking over Christian Bale as the Dark Knight. Rumours are still circulating that Jason Momoa might be joining the team as Aquaman, but the thing we're most excited for at the moment are recent whispers of Scoot McNairy taking on The Flash.

Introducing Ray Fisher As Warner Bros. "Batman Vs. Superman" Cyborg

Ray Fisher Zack Snyder Henry Cavill Ben Affleck Gal Gadot Amy Adams

The Batman vs. Superman movie casting may have had comic book fans on the brink of desperation up until now, but it looks like Zack Snyder and Co. may have gotten one thing right. Meet your new Cyborg – Ray Fisher. Now, Fisher is primarily a stage actor, although that has been known to work for past superhero movies and he has been cast as Victor Stone. That’s all we know at this point, according to Variety. Early reports claimed that Fisher was being considered for a part in Snyder's Star Wars Episode VII, but it looks like he was transferred to another big-budget Snyder production.

Ray Fisher
Fisher's background is mostly theatrical.

The character has a minor role in Batman vs. Superman, but this casting and Fisher’s appearance are intended to pave the way for future appearances by the superhero within the Justice League franchise that Warner Bros. is setting up for. A little background on Cyborg: the character made his first appearance in 1980's "DC Comics Presents" #26. In the "New 52" continuity, he's a high school athlete who, after getting caught in a S.T.A.R. Labs explosion, is given powerful bionic abilities that lead to him becoming a founding member of the Justice League.

Jennifer Lawrence has delighted owners of the recently released American Hustle DVD by appearing in one of the disc's deleted scenes lip-synching to Santana whilst wearing rubber gloves and cleaning. Those who have seen the film will remember a similar, shorter scene where Jennifer mimes and dances to Wings' 'Live and Let Die' in front of her bemused son but the extended 'Evil Ways' clip goes all the way.

So, Why Didn't 'American Hustle' Win A Single Academy Award?

Jennifer Lawrence Amy Adams Christian Bale

American Hustle may have a 93% fresh rating on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, but it failed to woo the Academy at this year’s awards show. In fact, despite having received 10 nominations in various categories at last night’s Academy Awards, American Hustle didn’t take home a single Oscar. How was it that a movie so well received by viewers and critics didn’t take home an award for any of the categories it was nominated for?

amy adams american hustle Amy Adams failed to win an Academy Award for her role in American Hustle

The answer's simple really.  The competition at this year’s Oscars was brutal. The Best Picture winner 12 Years A Slave has been hailed as one of the most powerful movies of all time, so much so that it has been added to the American high school curriculum by the National School Boards Association. This elevates it from being just another movie with a weighty theme into something entirely more important. 12 Years A Slave has made history and in the process been recognised as being so significant that it can be used as an educational tool. How do you like that for competition?

Her Review

Extraordinary

With only a hint of a futuristic setting, Spike Jonze takes a remarkably honest look at human emotions as a man and his computer's intelligent operating system fall madly in love with each other. Utterly grounded in believable characters and situations, this is a boldly inventive exploration of how we connect with each other. It's also one of the most involving, witty and evocative movies of the year.

It's set just a few years into the future, when we've essentially done away with keyboards and talk to our phones and computers. So Theodore (Phoenix) works in a company that writes letters for people who want a more tactile way of communicating. While trying not to let his recent divorce from Caroline (Mara) influence his work, his friends (Adams and Letscher) set him up on a blind date with a sexy woman (Wilde). But he's not quite ready to move on until he begins opening up to his new interactive operative system, which calls herself Samantha (voiced by Johansson). And she has such an open-hearted personality that Theodore can't help but fall for her.

The film has a breezy, fable-like tone that allows heavy themes to emerge without weighing us down. Indeed, the central idea is that relationships are difficult because we can't help but evolve individually, which sometimes means drifting apart. Obviously, this has huge ramifications when your partner is a limitless computer mind that will never stop expanding. But Theodore doesn't want to think about this; he is frightened by the idea that Samantha is changing. Yes, despite the vaguely surreal premise, the film is packed with things we readily identify with.

Jennifer Lawrence Stained 'American Hustle' Dress With Doritos!

Jennifer Lawrence Bradley Cooper Christian Bale Jeremy Renner Amy Adams Michael Wilkinson

For most of us, white dresses tend to be avoided due to the catastrophic stains which inevitably and quite magically appear all over the material and which are, quite inexplicably, impossible to scrub out. Fortunately, we're not the only ones and even the terribly glamorous and confident Jennifer Lawrence is not immune from destroying her wardrobe, even on a film set.

American Hustle
The cast of American Hustle, Jennifer Lawrence's pristine white dress can be seen on the far right.

Lawrence's white dress in American Hustle was the victim of Doritos stains and on more than one occasion. As a result, the film's costume designer Michael Wilkinson was forced to make a number of dresses for the clumsy star. Wilkinson, who is nominated for an Oscar for his work on American Hustle, was recently interviewed by Vanity Fair and he joked about Lawrence's junk food habits. He said "Jennifer Lawrence is a very, let's say, raw and intuitive young lady, and she's not against eating Doritos and snack food in her costume. So we were glad that we had a couple [of backups]."

'On a script that was so unique and full of these big ideas and this wonderful heart and accessible emotion... why wouldn't you do this movie?' 'We have in common that we're both at an emotional crossroads and looking to do things differently', Amy explains. The Women In 'American Hustle': Lawrence Is Brilliant While Adams Is Reinvented

In Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams, Hollywood has two confident, assertive, talented and self-aware women, more than poised to fight the fight against the patriarchy that is 2013’s film industry.

And while their roles in American Hustle can’t be described as dominant, neither are they submissive and meek. Lawrence plays a housewife – an odd sentence to follow up an opening paragraph that hints at forward thinking and equality – but that she does.
