Benedict Cumberbatch's Globes Photobomb: The Oscar Selfie Of 2015

Benedict Cumberbatch Meryl Streep Margaret Cho Michael Keaton Amy Poehler Golden Globe Awards

These days, it’s not an award show without an official selfie or photobomb or whatever image-related bandwagon Hollywood is hopping on that week. I’m talking, of course, about Benedict Cumberbatch, that painstaking “penguin” pronouncing pun producing pharaoh of the internet (feel free to pitch in a synonym starting with “p”).

Benedict Cumberbatch
Benedict Cumberbatch: the most awkward Brit in showbiz?

Here’s the backstory. Displaying the typical Hollywood amount of cultural sensitivity, hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were doing a bit on North Korea. Meanwhile, Meryl Streep was posing for a photo-op with an in-disguise Margaret Cho. Oh, and guess who was behind the camera? A treat for older viewers – it was Michael Keaton. It kind of begs the question - is BC's photobomb this year's Oscars selfie?

They Came Together Review

Good

How do you spoof a genre that's already a joke? Filmmakers David Wain and Michael Showalter clearly think the answer is to go for broke with a nonstop barrage of silliness, because some of the jokes are bound to stick. They did the same thing for teen summer-camp comedies more than a decade ago with Wet Hot American Summer, which stars many of the same actors. And while this movie is just as hilarious, it never quite transcends its own jokiness. Because as a rom-com it's never very engaging.

The story plays out as Joel and Molly (Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler) meet up with their friends (Bill Hader and Ellie Kemper) and regale them with the story of their romance. Everything about their courtship is just like in the movies, from the meet-cute to the fact that New York is another character in their story. Molly runs an adorable candy shop, while Joel is a "not too handsome or too Jewish" corporate raider sent to shut her down, but they hit it off, engage in a wildly energetic first sexual encounter, then go through the usual montage sequences on their way to the usual rough patches ("Your dreams don't pay the rent!"), breakups and mad-dash reunions.

Since it's told in flashbacks, the film feels almost like a collection of comedy sketches, most of which are ridiculously funny. The jokes are clever and pointed, with riotous side characters including sassy best friends, inappropriate relatives, idiotic coworkers and clingy ex-lovers. So every scene is a zany mixture of goofy slapstick, surreal visual gags and hysterically overstated emotion. Thankfully, the cast is more than adept at wringing every moment for laughter. Rudd and Poehler have impeccable timing, and they're supported by a terrific cast of seasoned comical actors, including amusing cameos from the likes of Adam Scott, Michael Shannon and Norah Jones.

Things get complicated though when Mr Baker Sr.'s last will and testament requests Ben be the receiver of his house, business and estate. Unfortunately, though, Ben is less than up to the task of taking on the family business and so Steve helps him find a way to get him back on his feet emotionally.

Louis C.K's 'Tomorrow Night' Is Released Alongside 'Don't Torrent' Plea

Louis C.K. Steve Carell Amy Poehler J.B. Smoove

Louis C.K is an honest guy. At least, he seems to be an honest guy. Instead of implementing loads of anti-pirating measurements, he released his dormant film, Tomorrow Night with minimum hoo-ha, and accompanied it with a friendly reminder that pirating would likely stop him being to work in the way he does, and he'll probably stop doing Louie - and no one wants that to happen.

Louis CKPress: Louis C.K from his hit FX show, Louie

Why should we care? Well, because C.K is one of the most organic workers in comedy right now. He doesn’t do bad things, or things he considers bad, and he works really hard. Of course, pirating a silly big-budget action film and then buying C.K’s film doesn’t offer you repent – you dirty internet thief, but it does at least show support for the way in which Louis works. That’s enough gushing, for now.

Bono Warned To "Watch Your Back" After Amy Poehler Kiss At Golden Globes

Amy Poehler Bono Nick Kroll Golden Globe Awards

Amy Poehler was awarded the Best Actress in a Television Series (Comedy) award at the 2014 Golden Globe Awards for her role as Leslie Knope in Parks and Recreation this weekend. It was a thoroughly deserved recognition and one that Poehler, who also co-hosted the event with Tina Fey, was overwhelmed with. The win also earned her a congratulator smooch from U2 frontman Bono, an extra that Poehler's boyfriend didn't approve of.

Poehler had a hectic night on Sunday, 12 Jan.

As Poehler got up to the stage to accept her award, she was congratulated by Bono, who has given a passionate kiss from Poehler, with the singer then receiving a light-hearted threat from Poehler's man Nick Kroll. He posted on his Twitter: "Hey Bono, watch your back," in an attempt to scare the singer into submission. So far, we don't think it worked.

Early 'Sundance' Favourites Already Generating A Buzz For Upcoming Movies

The Sundance Film Festival is the place to be for young, aspiring filmmakers hoping to crack into the hotly-contested business of the movies. By the end of the film festival, which this year runs from 16-26 January, there are always a selection of film titles that are revived for the following awards season, and this year people are so eager for the celluloid showcase that a number of early contenders for festival glory have been marked before their debut release.

God's Pocket
The dark God's Pocket stars Philip Seymour Hoffman and Eddie Marsan

In thirty years the film has discovered some of the most promising filmmakers out there and continues to deliver, from Roland Joffé’s The Killing Fields in the festival's opening year (1985) to last year's most notable success; Fruitvale Station, the debut feature length from Ryan Coogler. With another 120 films to get through this year it seems more than likely that at least one of the releases will be leaving Park City, Utah, with more than a few skiing lessons and a commemorative t-shirt.

Bloggers Defend Mindy Kaling, While Kaling Defends Elle Cover

Mindy Kaling Amy Poehler Zooey Deschanel Allison Williams

Bloggers and online commenters are in a bit of a twist over Mindy Kaling’s newly released Elle cover, but the star of The Mindy Project herself is staying classy about it. After the four covers of this month’s issue (featuring Kaling and fellow honorees Zooey Deschanel (New Girl), Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation) and Allison Williams (Girls)), people were quick to point out that Kaling seemed to have drawn the short end of the stick. While the other women were pictured in color, full-body portraits, while Kaling received the black and white treatment. Her photo is also the only one cropped to focus just on her face.

Mindy Kaling, Fox Fall Party
Did Kaling's body type prevent her from getting the same treatment as her fellow actresses?

Because Kaling is the only one who counts as “curvier” by Hollywood standards (although a size 8 could hardly be called “curvy” in Regular People Land), the conclusion that Elle had cropped her due to restrictive beauty standards was obvious. The same sort of controversy happened back in 2013, when Melissa McCarthy posed for the cover, draped in a baggy coat. Back then, however, McCarthy insisted that the look had been her own choice and that was that.

As usual, their antics involve the usual scandal and debauchery, putting their careers and tarnished reputations once again in the media's line of fire. No matter though, as these co-workers have each other's backs all the way.

Former nomination regulars like Mad Men and Homefront are nowhere to be seen in the nominees lists, replaced instead by the new order of critically-acclaimed shows.

Master of Sex and House of Cards now look like the shows to beat, with Breaking Bad making what will be its final appearance at the Golden Globes with the series ending this year. This comes just a year after Homeland achieved the impressive feat of winning Best Drama Series, Best Male Actor and Best Female Actor all in one night, although this does mark the second year in a row that the 2007-2009 winner Mad Men has not appeared in the Best Drama category.

Good

An energetic sense of the absurd helps make this animated romp entertaining, even though the script is almost painfully stupid. But the pace is so brisk, and the stream of deranged jokes so continual, that kids will find it hilarious and grown-ups won't be able to stop smiling. So who cares if the story makes no sense at all?

Our hero is a scrawny turkey named Reggie (voiced by Wilson), who's an outcast on his farm because he's both smart and naive. When he's accidentally pardoned by the US President on Thanksgiving, he's living the high life until the meathead turkey Jake (Harrelson) kidnaps him, ranting about a mission to travel back in time to stop the pilgrims from starting the Thanksgiving turkey tradition to begin with. Sure enough, they find a time machine and off they go to 1621, where they team up with a colony of native American turkeys led by Broadbeak (David) and his feisty daughter Jenny (Poehler). But they're also being pursued by a relentless human hunter (Meaney).

The screenwriters conveniently ignore the fact that more turkeys are eaten globally at Christmas than at America's Thanksgiving, but never mind. They also pack the script with a continuous stream of riotously warped gags, random movie references and crazed action sequences. Although even a 5-year-old will be confused that 17th century pilgrims are rendered more like 19th century cowboys. This continual sense of incoherence gets even more annoying later, when the plot abandons even its own tenuous sense of logic. But by then we have realised that it's pointless to resist.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues - International Trailer

The news used to be a noble profession before the likes of Ron Burgundy with his set of San Diego anchors Brian Fantana, Brick Tamland and Champ Kind took over. Now it's all about scandal, debauchery and vulgarity and Burgundy and his team are fighting hard to keep it that way. As per usual, they manage to get themselves in all kinds of trouble involving drugs in the studio, completely inappropriate news headlines, accidental racism (not to mention homophobia) and, of course, getting laid, and it's all in a bid to remain on top of the media as Ron fights his own battle to professionally tower over his wife and rival Veronica.

'Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues' is the even more hilarious sequel to 2004's 'Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy'. There's definitely more laughs to be had from everyone's favourite news readers as Judd Apatow ('The 40 Year Old Virgin', 'Knocked Up', 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall') returns to produce it. Director Adam McKay ('Step Brothers', 'The Other Guys', 'Talladega Nights') is also back alongside his co-writer and star Will Ferrell. It is set to feature in cinemas just in time for Christmas, premiering in theatres everywhere on December 20th 2013.

Mark Twain Prize Ceremony Sees Carol Burnett As Sharp And Witty As Ever

Carol Burnett Tina Fey Amy Poehler

By all accounts, the ceremony awarding Carol Burnett with the Mark Twain Prize last night (Sunday) was a roaring success. The comedienne has been a fixture in television for the past five decades, ever since launching her eponymous variety show in the 1960s. Since then she has been busting taboos and representing women in television with style. Sunday saw her honored with the prize at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

There are few people, who deserve it more.

As per comedic tradition, she was also honored (read: roasted) by some of the top names in the business: Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Julie Andrews and Tony Bennett all performed in honor of the legendary comedienne. The show was taped and will air on November 24, which is great for all those, who enjoy a bit (or a lot) of that trademark Burnett snark. "This is very encouraging," Burnett, 80, deadpanned in accepting the prize,.

The host, Neil Patrick Harrris started off slightly sluggish and according to Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, it needed something else, it needed twerking! From the front row, the two female comedians were heard shouting at Harris during his chaotic opening sequence, to start performing a 'twerk', the dance made famous by Miley Cyrus's infamous MTV Video Music Award performance.

Whilst seated at the front row wearing 3D glasses and eating a rather large bag of popcorn, both Fey and Peohler butted in on how they thought he could improve the show.

Woody Harrelson Owen Wilson Amy Poehler George Takei Colm Meaney Dwight Howard Keith David

The trailer for Free Birds, Jimmy Hayward's animated adventure movie, rolled out online this week. It stars Reggie the Thanksgiving turkey (Owen Wilson) who fails to convince his dumb feathered friends that they're being fattened up for the approaching festival feast, alienating himself from the group.

Watch the 'Free Birds' trailer:

However, things begin to look up when he is rescued by the President and begins a new life of eating pizza at his cool new pad. When militant turkey Jake (Woody Harrelson) shows up, Reggie's new life of peace is put on the backburner in favour of a death-defying mission to go back in time and scratch out the traditional festive dinner from history. It sounds mental. It kind of is a bit mental, but it's sure to be plenty of fun for kids and families this Christmas.

But when militant turkey Jake shows up, it's clear that he's not destined for a life of peace as he is enlisted on a death-defying mission to go back in time to the first thanksgiving and scratch out the traditional festive dinner and save the lives of thousands of their kind.

Anchorman 2 Trailer

Ron Burgundy, Brian Fantana, Brick Tamland and Champ Kind have now hit the eighties and things are a little different. The legendary San Diego news anchors are now embarking on a different project, as part of a 24 hour news channel, but now they have fresh competition in the form of a young, handsome and well-dressed fellow anchor. Ron continues to put himself in sticky situations, this time involving some awkward racism with his new girlfriend's family during a social occasion among many other things. Will their antics extend beyond their previous capers involving angry bears and mean bikers?  Or will the eighties bring with it a more streetwise news bunch? We doubt the latter.

The sequel to 2004's 'Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy' is set to hit our screens soon entitled 'Anchorman: The Legend Continues'. We'll likely be seeing yet more hijinks from one of Hollywood's favourite comedy casts as they return following at massive $85 million gross from the original movie. Produced again by Judd Apatow ('The 40 Year Old Virgin', 'Knocked Up', 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall'), Adam McKay ('Step Brothers', 'The Other Guys', 'Talladega Nights') also makes a return as director and co-writer alongside Will Ferrell. It is scheduled for release in the UK on December 20th 2013.

The legendary San Diego news anchors are doubtlessly set to entertain us with more news casting exploits which, according to the latest teaser trailer, will involve 'submachine guns and boobies' and getting 'stinky'. One thing's for sure, it's going to be funnier, weirder and much ruder.

Ron Burgundy Is Coming With Better Hair Than Ever In New Anchorman 2 Trailer

Will Ferrell Paul Rudd Vince Vaughn Christina Applegate Kanye West Kristen Wiig Amy Poehler Tina Fey Drake Harrison Ford

As the excitement builds for the Anchorman sequel Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, another trailer for the film was released. You can check out the second trailer, featuring the beloved cast of Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, Vince Vaughn and Steve Carell. But we already knew they were in it and, exciting as that prospect is, the cameos, which have been announced recently, make this movie look even better. Viewers will get appearances by actors like Kanye West, Kristen Wiig, Amy Poehler, Jim Carrey, Tina Fey and Harrison Ford, New York Daily News reports.

And the cameos just keep coming. After Kanye West, busy as he is, wrapped his scenes in New York last week, there was another surprising appearance on set – namely an actor, sporting a fro and the appropriate 70s duds, who looked suspiciously like singer/rapper Drake. Apparently the "Take Care" performer will be the latest star in the constellation already appearing in this film. Not only that, but the Daily News also posted several pictures of stars Will Ferrell and Christina Applegate taken during shooting. They look fierce, they look ready to go, but most of all, they look, unsurprisingly, very 70s. And if nothing else, the stills make it obvious that Anchorman 2 will definitely feature some excellent hairdos.

Don't Worry, 'Parks And Recreation' Is 'Guaranteed' To Return For Season 6

Amy Poehler NBC

Parks and Recreation wrapped up its fifth season on Thursday evening (May 2, 2013) with many speculating that the episode was a series finale given Fox and CBS have already renewed their veteran shows for the 2013-2014 season. It's true that NBC appears to be dragging its feet over 'Parks' and the network brought back dramas such as Parenthood, Grimm and Revolution last month, but don't despair, Parks and Recreation will be back for a sixth season.

The New York Magazine's Vulture blog has outlined the whole thing pretty nicely, claiming sources inside and outside of the network say the show is guaranteed to return for another patch of episodes. In line with NBC's other comedy standards, Parks and Recreations is actually doing pretty well. In fact, only The Office is pulling in better numbers (and that closes up shop this month). Parks has a better rating among adults under 50 than Matthew Perry's Go On (which could get the chop this month) and that has the benefit of following the top rated The Voice.

Vulture also spoke to several agents and network insiders this week, who all said Parks is "very likely to be back." Deadline.com - who are almost always spot on with renewals - are talking of season six as if it's a done deal. The website said a new batch of episodes was "assured."
