Andrew Garfield Emma Stone

During last Sunday’s Golden Globes Andrew Garfield was seen giving Emma Stone a standing ovation when she picked up the Best Actress in a Motion Picture award for La La Land.

The sweet gesture might have been surprising to some, as Garfield and Stone broke-up in October 2015 after for years of dating. But speaking on Vanity Fair’s Little Gold Men podcast, Garfield explained that he’s still Stone’s biggest fan.

Andrew Garfield Says Martin Scorsese Is A 'Gift' To Storytelling

Martin Scorsese Andrew Garfield

Andrew Garfield has praised director Martin Scorsese for his work on their Catholicism based film 'Silence', dubbing him a 'master' at what he does. The film is released this week, and it's already received much critical acclaim for its depiction of the journey of two Jesuit priests to Japan in the 17th century.

SilenceAndrew Garfield stars in 'Silence'

'Silence' has been something that Martin Scorsese wanted to work on since the release of his last major religious project , 1988's 'The Last Temptation of Christ'. It's based on the 1966 novel of the same name by Shusaku Endo and also stars Liam Neeson and Adam Driver. It explores a period of time where Christianity was prohibited in Japan, though missionaries still ventured there to spread the word of God and suffered desperately as a consequence.

Andrew Garfield Didn't Speak For A Week To Prepare For Silence

Andrew Garfield

The film is Martin Scorsese's period drama Silence, about Jesuit priests facing persecution in 17th century Japan. And Garfield says that being part of the film is still reverberating.

"My sensitivity, I think, gets me in so much trouble," he says. "It gives me a tremendous amount of wonderful things in my life, as well. It means that I can connect deeply to things, whether it's other people, characters I play, the struggles of others. But in the same breath, it means I can just as easily connect to the stuff that really f**ks with me! I'm very permeable in that way."

Silence Review

Excellent

Faith is a topic Martin Scorsese can't quite shake, courting controversy with complex films like The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) and Kindun (1997). And now he has adapted the Shusaku Endo novel into this profound exploration of religion. As seen through the eyes of a 17th century Jesuit priest in Japan, it's a dark, contemplative film that sometimes feels a bit too murky for its own good. But it also has bracing insight into our need to believe.

At the centre of the story is the disappearance of Father Ferreira (Liam Neeson) as Japan cracks down on foreign religions in 1640, brutally persecuting local converts. Back in Portugal, two of Ferreira's proteges, Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield) and Garrpe (Adam Driver), volunteer to go in search of him. But the journey is dangerous, requiring them to trust exiled Japanese drunk Kichijiro (Yosuke Kubozuka) to sneak them into a rural village near Nagasaki. There they find an underground group of devout Catholics who are hiding from the cruel Inquisitor Inoue (Issei Ogata). After they split up to search for Ferreira, Rodrigues is captured by Inoue and interrogated by his interpreter (Tadanobu Asano), who is determined to show him that Christianity can never take root in Japan.

The film has an eerie resonance in today's divisive global climate, where everyone seems determined to protect their own culture from any outside influence, especially a religion that seems to run counter to long-held traditions. But the film's deeper themes explore the idea that we all have a yearning to understand the world and our existence in a way that makes sense to us. So debating the relative benefits of Christianity and Buddhism is actually beside the point. When the movie lets these ideas simmer under the surface, it has real power, especially in Rodrigues' experiences, which are gruelling both physically and emotionally.

Liam Neeson: Andrew Garfield Is An 'Extraordinary' Actor

Liam Neeson Andrew Garfield

Liam Neeson has opened up about working alongside Andrew Garfield on their new film 'Silence' - the latter's second movie based on religion this year. 64-year-old Neeson might be an Oscar nominated acting veteran, but that doesn't mean he can't be struck by youthful talent.

Liam NeesonLiam Neeson praises Andrew Garfield

'He's an extraordinary young actor', Liam Neeson mused. 'His commitment to this part, to the film and to Martin was quite extraordinary.' He went on to add that he was deeply impressed by another film that Garfield was a part of this year. 'I recently saw 'Hacksaw Ridge' too. Oh my God!' He exclaimed. 'Two films about faith, my gosh. He's very very special.'

Andrew Garfield Laments "Compromised" Spider-Man Movies

Andrew Garfield Amy Adams

Although they were the movies that made him a household name at the start of the decade, Hollywood star Andrew Garfield has hit out at The Amazing Spider-Man movies for being “corporate” and “compromised”.

In a new video interview with fellow star Amy Adams for Variety, the 33 year old actor expressed his “heartbreak” about being involved with the movies. Garfield was, of course, singled out and dropped from the franchise after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 bombed in 2014, with the planned sequels being folded into the wider Marvel cinematic universe.

Father Sebastião Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield) and Father Francisco Garrpe (Adam Driver) are Portuguese Jesuit priests who set out on a dangerous mission to Japan in a bid to find their mentor Father Cristóvão Ferreira (Liam Neeson) who has been missing for sometime. It's the seventeenth century, and despite what the Bible might say about the importance of spreading the Christian word of God throughout the world, there are just some places on this Earth that brutally forbid it. Needless to say, Ferreira has been ousted from the church to which he belongs after publicly denouncing his faith to save his own life. Rodgrigues and Garrpe are about to discover just how violent the world can be towards everything that they've ever worked for when they arrive in Japan. Surely there is no test of faith that can match the journey that lies ahead for them.

'Hacksaw Ridge' Star Andrew Garfield Doesn't Believe Mel Gibson 'Rarely Enjoys' Movie Making

Mel Gibson Andrew Garfield

Mel Gibson returns to directing with 'Hacksaw Ridge'; the true story of World War 2 hero and army medic Desmond T. Doss who refused to take a weapon into battle. He is played by Andrew Garfield, who is certainly no stranger to on screen heroism.

Andrew GarfieldAndrew Garfield stars in 'Hacksaw Ridge'

When 'Hacksaw Ridge' received its standing ovation at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival, it's difficult to know whether the applause was down to the movie or down to that fact that Mel Gibson has finally taken a seat in the director's chair again after 10 years. But it seems that his absence might have little to do with the scandalous outburst of 2006 and more to do with the fact that he doesn't actually like filmmaking that much.

Andrew Garfield Explains Why 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Was Bad

Andrew Garfield

However we try and dress it up, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 wasn't very good. It had Jamie Foxx as Electro. It had Paul Giamatti as Rhino. It was a big-budget superhero sequel. It should have been awesome. It was not awesome. And now Andrew Garfield has explained why.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man 2

"When you have something that works as a whole, and then you start removing portions of it...saying, 'No, that doesn't work,' then the thread is broken, and it's hard to go with the flow of the story," Garfield said during an interview with The Daily Beast, suggesting that Sony removed sections of the movie, rendering it incomplete, patchy and poorly formed.

Let Battle Commence: Superhero Studios Fight For Best Opening Weekend

We live in a movie world of superheroes at the moment with franchise after franchise adding more and more sequels to their collections and production companies exploiting as many comic book successes as possible. However, while Thor protects Asgard with his big hammer, Superman tries to anonymously save the world with only a pair of specs as identity protection and Spider-Man deals with his abandonment issues, there are much more sinister fights afoot in production background.

The biggest battle is for release dates and the most recent clamber for the best one began when Sony announced its decision to ‘undate’ The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 4 which were scheduled to come out on June 10 2016 and May 4 2018 respectively.

Whatever Happened To Shailene Woodley's Scenes In "The Amazing Spider-Man 2?"

Shailene Woodley Andrew Garfield Emma Stone

Have you seen The Amazing Spider-Man 2? Noticed something missing from The Amazing Spider-Man 2? People on the internet have – Mary Jane Watson did not feature in a single scene, despite the fact that there was an actress, cast for the role. Shailene Woodley, the rising young actress with lead roles in Divergent and The Fault in Our Stars even shot her scenes as MJ, but by the time the film was released, they had ended up on the cutting room floor. Or, more likely, at the bottom of some tired film editor’s hard drive.

Shailene Woodley
Woodley did "a couple days of great work" on the film, but her scenes just didn't fit in with the story.

Besides a few pap shots of Woodley with long red hair, it seems like her turn as MJ is lost forever. But why? According to director Marc Webb and producer Matt Tolmach, speaking for The LA Times, it had nothing to do with her performance – in fact, Woodley did a great job. The decision to cut her scenes was just made to devote more screen time to the relationship between Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy.

Studio executives were probably beginning to sweat after the first batch of reviews, though the movie didn't disappoint at the box-office and exceeded expectations, despite falling well short of the $174 million taken by Iron Man 3 last year.

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" Delivers Not-So-Amazing Box Office Numbers

Andrew Garfield

The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s $92 Million debut over the weekend is up there with some blockbusters, but analysts are calling it a disappointment nonetheless, especially compared to Sam Raimi’s original trilogy from the 00s. Both the first and third installments of Raimi’s Spider-Man premiered on the first weekend of May and pulled in $114.8 million and $151.1 million, respectively. Still, with no other wide-release movie to compete with, the 2014 sequel easily landed at No. 1 for the weekend.Wa

Weekend Box Office: Spidey's Back, Back Again

Andrew Garfield

Predictable, but well deserved – The Amazing Spider-Man 2 swung its way to the top of the box office charts this weekend. Spidey netted $92 million, according to studio estimates from box office trackers Rentrak, via USA Today. The debut matched most analysts’ predictions and puts The Amazing Spider-Man sequel on track to be one of the biggest movies of 2014, however it doesn’t quite match the first Spider-Man’s $115 million debut from 2002.

The best recipe for on-screen chemistry is real-life chemistry. But while Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield might have plenty of that, it doesn’t stop them from sharing the occasional super awkward makeout sesh for comedic effect. You'd think after all that kissing - on-screen and off - they'd know how to do it by now,

What Do We Know About 'The Sinister Six' Movie So Far?

Andrew Garfield Emma Stone Dane DeHaan

Spider-Man might be about to swing his way back onto our screens in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but our favourite hero might just need to watch his back as the Sinister Six are coming. Drew Goddard has just been confirmed as the director for the upcoming movie, which will expand the Spider-Man franchise by turning its attention to some of Spidey’s most notorious villains.

Andrew Garfield as Spider-ManWatch out Spider-Man, the Sinister Six are coming

It was late last year that Sony announced its plans to create what it called a “bigger universe” around its most popular superhero, Spider-Man. Along with a third Spider-Man movie, Sony decided to branch out the franchise by creating two movies based around some of Peter Parker’s most famous foes, Venom and the Sinister Six. As Spider-Man producer Avid Arad put it, “Villains can be very entertaining. It’s not like somebody’s born and they’re a villain. Something happens and it changes their lives. Some people can deal with it — they become the heroes. Some people can’t and hate the world because of what they felt was done to them — they become the villains.” Thus the hope is that these two new villain centric movies will further strength the Spider-Man franchise, giving Peter Parker a world of developed characters to do battle with.

The big story this week is that Wonder Woman will make her long-awaited big-screen debut in the upcoming Batman vs Superman movie starring Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill. Israeli actress Gal Gadot has nabbed the key role; she's best known as Gisele in the last three Fast & Furious movies. 'Batman vs. Superman' has found its Wonder Woman, but who is Gal Gadot?

It was also announced that Rita Ora has joined the cast of Fifty Shades of Grey, which is currently filming in Vancouver with Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan in the lead roles, and Sam Taylor-Wood directing. Others joining the cast include Marcia Gay Harden and Jennifer Ehle. We take a closer look at the appointment here.

New 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' Trailer Looks Awesome, But How Will It Do Against 'The Winter Soldier?'

Andrew Garfield Emma Stone Jamie Foxx Paul Giamatti Martin Sheen Sally Field

There’s one big piece of news on the entertainment circuit that you should be paying attention to: how cool is the new Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer. According to popular opinion, it is with stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone that the franchise has really found its footing and this second film from Garfield’s trilogy looks pretty much amazing, judging from the trailer, released yesterday.

Andrew Garfield, Jamie Foxx, Spider-Man 2 Still
The special effects look particularly gorgeous.

We already know that the masked superhero will be taking on a trio of The Green Goblin (Chris Cooper) The Rhino (Paul Giamatti) and Electro (Jamie Foxx,) the latter of whom has a particularly cool scene in the trailer, as he goes after Spider-Man with whips of static electricity. Not to mention that his one line in the trailer is said with enough power to convert any non-believers in Foxx’s aptitude for the role. The point of the trailer is fairly obvious: Electro is coming and the lights are going out. In fact, that could make for some sneaky real-world parallels and maybe a power/electricity analogy here and there, which Marvel have obviously caught on to.

Why Sony's Refusal To Work With Disney Could Work In Spider-Man's Favour

Spider Man Andrew Garfield Emma Stone

Spider-Man has a big role to play in the future of Sony Pictures, despite the studio's recent announcements that it's drastically cutting its movie expenditure, as they look to produce more sequels and even some spin-off material from The Amazing Spider-Man series.

Spiderman
Filming is well underway for the new Spider-Man film

Despite this good news for Spidey fans, the studio have also announced that it has no intentions of teaming up with Marvel or Disney and introducing the web-slinger in the next Avengers movie, or any other future releases from the rival studio.

From Action To Art House: Paul Giamatti Adds A Touch Of Excellence To This Year's Upcoming Flicks

Paul Giamatti Paul Rudd Chiwetel Ejiofor Tom Hanks Andrew Garfield

Paul Giamatti is not the sort of actor who gets typecast easily, his first major success was his role in 'American Splendor' in 2001 for which he won an award for Best Breakthrough Performance from National Board of Review of Motion Pictures, among many other nominations, for portraying comic book author Harvey Pekar. His success burned brighter when he won more than 10 accolades for playing depressed wino Miles Raymond in 2004 comedy drama 'Sideways' as well as being nominated for a Golden Globe, and he was later nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in boxing flick 'Cinderella Man' opposite Russell Crowe. Next year will no doubt bring in a few shiny new prizes for his latest projects, many of which are definite must-sees.

2013 has seen the Oscar nominee get involved with a variety of upcoming movie projects including animation, romance and superhero action - and we have to say we're glad to see this gifted artiste stamping some of his humour and intensity all over our movie theatres.

Peter Landesman's directorial feature debut 'Parkland' is due for release imminently (October 4th 2013) and sees Giamatti portray the often forgotten Abraham Zapruder; the amateur photographer who unwittingly videoed the assassination of US President John F. Kennedy and whose footage has been seen by millions across the globe. On researching the role, Giamatti explained in an interview that there was a lot of information about Zapruder in the script, but he also learned a lot about his speech and body language from footage of him before and after the assassination. He will star alongside Zac Efron, Marcia Gay Harden and Billy Bob Thornton.

Brits Take The Lead! 2013 Sees America Ship In Overseas Talent

Idris Elba Henry Cavill Chiwetel Ejiofor Benedict Cumberbatch Daniel Day Lewis Andrew Garfield Tom Hiddleston Dominic West Ben Barnes Max Irons Nicholas Hoult Aaron Johnson

It used to be that British actors were traditionally cast by Hollywood filmmakers as villains; in endless kids' Disney flicks we'd hear exaggeratedly posh English voices coming out of the most evil of witches ('Snow White'), scary giant octopuses ('The Little Mermaid') and murderous lions ('The Lion King'), and even the creators of some of the biggest blockbusters such as 'Die Hard' and 'The Silence Of The Lambs' scoured the UK for the perfect sinister accent.

However, now the Brits are playing the good guys with a surge of overseas talent showcasing their well-practised foreign accents over the past few years - even one of the most American flicks of 2012, Steven Spielberg's 'Lincoln' cast London born Daniel Day-Lewis as the iconic US President. Here are our four biggest British stars that have been making their mark in Hollywood with seminal roles over the past and coming months.

New Spiderman Films Are On The Way – Is This The Decade Of The Superhero Film?

Andrew Garfield Henry Cavill

With the announcement that Spiderman films three and four are on the way, we started pondering: is this the decade of the superhero movie? Sure, you’ll say the Batman Dark Knight trilogy launched the genre into new realms, giving it a new sense of respectability, and that was LAST decade, but we’ve got our own ideas.

With the recent releases of Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel – the latest entry to the Superman film franchise – we’ll be seeing many more comic book heroes see their characters realised with unprecedented production values before 2021. The Spiderman films will hit theaters on June 10, 2016 and May 4, 2018 respectively, Sony announced. "Spider-Man is our most important, most successful, and most beloved franchise, so we're thrilled that we are in a position to lock in these prime release dates over the next five years," said Jeff Blake, chairman of worldwide marketing and distribution for Sony in a statement. And with The Avengers 2 set for cinemas in 2014, and many other franchises due a reboot, this decade might just see the biggest 10 years for our comic book favourites ever, even if Batman’s moral tribulations set the scene in the naughties.

Man of Steel, the latest superhero film, could jeopardize that theory though; Henry Cavill’s turn as the caped journalist-cum-hero has been received fairly well, but didn’t accumulate the glowing reviews expected from such a big budget affair.

Andrew Garfield And Jamie Foxx Shoot 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' In New York!

Andrew Garfield Jamie Foxx

Andrew Garfield and Jamie Foxx filmed a dramatic fight scene for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in New York on Sunday afternoon (April 28, 2012). Garfield, 29, wore his superhero suit and turquoise beanie hat for much of the daily's filming, while Foxx looked rather geeky as super villain Electro's alter-ego Maxwell Dillon. In place of his usual shaved head, Jamie wore a strange looking wig complete with receding hairline and glasses.

According to the Daily Mail, many of the stunts were performed by a handful of doubles, though New Yorkers were able to get a glimpse of the Hollywood A-listers wandering around the set. One of the sequences, in which Foxx engaged in a spring for the cameras while grasping a stack of blueprints in his arms appears to be a key plot line in the movie. As fans of the comic books will know, Maxwell is an electrical engineer who gets struck by lightning while repairing a power line. The strike causes a change which gives him the power to control electricity. In other words, he's a considerable threat to Spider-Man.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Garfield shot scenes as Spider-Man's alter-ego Peter Parker and another fight scene in which he scuffled with Electro. For what it's worth, Spidey appeared to be winning.

PDA In NYC: Emma Stone And Andrew Garfield Caught In Affectionate Moment In New York

Emma Stone Andrew Garfield

It’s always reassuring to spot a celebrity couple going about their lives and doing normal couple things together. And so it is that we reserve a small applause of gratitude for Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield, for allowing themselves to be photographed (okay, admittedly they may not have known they were being photographed) out in New York City, doing normal people things, like carrying shopping bags and crossing the road and popping into a tattoo parlour together and even… oh yes… sharing a little kiss together, out there, in the public, in the real world, where the little people live.

New York Daily News were the eager recipients of the snaps of the 'Amazing Spiderman 2' stars, which show Emma and Andrew taking a walk around Tribeca in their sort-of-matching jackets carrying a Bubby’s restaurant carry-out bag and a J.Crew shopping bag. The happy couple paused to steal a kiss as they waited for the traffic to stop, to cross the street and were later spotted leaving New York’s Adorned tattoo parlour. No visible signs of tattoos on either of them, though only their faces and hands were showing and we don’t suppose they’d have ben likely to get tattooed on either of those areas.

Is Paul Giamatti Set For Dream Role In The Amazing Spider-Man 2?

Paul Giamatti Andrew Garfield Jamie Foxx Emma Stone Shailene Woodley Dane DeHaan

Somebody must have been reading when Paul Giamatti expressed a desire to appear in a Spider-Man film, back in 2011. It’s now been reported that the actor is in talks to join the cast for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the reboot which stars Andrew Garfield as the web-firing mutant hero.

Giamatti is apparently in talks to play the villainous Rhino, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The character first appeared in the 41st issue of the comic back in 1966; hailing from a Soviet Bloc country, he wore a suit that made him invulnerable whilst giving him super strength and speed; speaking back in 2011, Giamatti admitted that he loved the character. “I thought Rhino was the greatest thing when I was a little kid,” he commented. “It was a guy who was basically in this rhinoceros outfit and I always thought, ‘Why don’t they have The Rhino in one of their movies,’ but maybe The Rhino wasn’t that big of a deal for anybody but me. If they ever go with The Rhino I would be ready and waiting.”

And it appears that Marvel Entertainment have listened; if he does sign up he’ll be joining an impressive looking cast, with Garfield and Emma Stone both returning. Jamie Foxx, Shailene Woodley and Dane DeHaan are also appearing. Marc Webb once again directs.

Emma Stone Sex Tape? Probably Not

Emma Stone Andrew Garfield

Emma Stone probably doesn't have a sex tape. And that's precisely what we'd like to believe. There are rumours flying around from dubious sources that she may have made a tap in the past, but that it's somewhere deep in the darkest depths of the universe, with little chance of it ever seeing the light of day. We'd like to keep it that way.

Stone really came into her own in a Easy A. Easy A is a 2010 movie that's all about the protagonist, Olive Penderghast, pretending she's had sex with various people help out the members of her high school lower down the popularity ladder than herself. While she gave herself the scarlet letter in that film, it seems the rumours about Stone now are putting that scarlet letter right on her, instead.

She's currently dating her The Amazing Superman co-star Andrew Garfield and the Huffington Post even reported that they may be moving in together! Although again, those rumours are dubious as well. Stone is notoriously private about every aspect of her life. In an interview with Parade Magazine she said: "I'm sorry, I hate to be that actress who says 'I don't talk about my personal life,' eeesh. I was such a fan as a kid, and there were so many people I wanted to know about. I understand it; I just can't bring myself to do it. I freak out having a Facebook." So whether or not the rumours are true (and we think perhaps not), Stone will never tell us.

Emma Stone's Sex Tape Does Not Feature Andrew Garfield

Emma Stone Andrew Garfield Stephen Merchant Richard Gere

Emma Stone's alleged sex-tape does not feature her Amazing Spider-Man co-star and current boyfriend Andrew Garfield. RadarOnline.com previously reported how a home video of the Easy A star was in existence, though the website claims her beau Garfield is nowhere to be seen.

Stone, 24, is said to have "a wild streak that has culminated itself in the form of a homemade sex romp". Hmm. Radar even quote a source privy to the clip, who says, "Emma Stone has a sex tape and that's a fact. She made it long before she started dating Andrew Garfield and before she really became a household name. She was just young and probably thought nothing would ever come of it." The good news for the actress is that the tape is yet to be shopped around and "remains in the hands of the person she made it with." However, the source warns, "but that doesn't mean there's any guarantee that it won't eventually hit the market. The higher Emma's star rises, the more valuable that tape becomes."

Though it's worked pretty well for Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton, the release of a tape would likely hinder Stone's promising Hollywood career. In fact, an insider said, "There's no way she would organize the release of the tape; in fact, she would fight to stop it." The actress next stars in comedy Movie 43, alongside Stephen Merchant and Richard Gere.

Jamie Foxx Set To Star As Spiderman Villain Electro

Jamie Foxx Marc Webb Andrew Garfield Emma Stone

Jamie Foxx is set to give another electric performance (sorry) in the upcoming sequel to The Amazing Spiderman, as the superhero's nemesis, Electro, Variety reports.

According to sources, Foxx is deep into discussions to play the role, and tweeted, "Dressed up as Electro for Halloween last night. Costume fits well," which won't have served to dampen any rumours, that's for sure. Much like Spiderman, who of course was bitten by a radioactive spider, Electro harnesses the power of electricity due a close encounter with a lighting bolt. You would have thought the pair might bond over their shared experiences, but no. Talking yesterday to Coming Soon, the aptly named director Marc Webb said, "I think Jamie Foxx is electrifying!" and added, "I think Jamie Foxx is one of the best actors around today. He's such a great character actor and he's a really brilliant guy. I would love to work with him and you'll be hearing more on that shortly, I'm sure." Now he didn't move to confirm the rumours, but if we don't see Foxx terrorising and Spiderman coming to the rescue, we'll be disappointed.

In the interview, Webb also added his admiration for Electro in particular. "I like Electro," he smiled. "I'm fascinated by Norman Osborn and the different inflections of him. And Harry. Mary Jane and Gwen are always interesting to me."

The Amazing Spider Man Review

Very Good
Just 10 years after Sam Raimi's now-iconic Spider-man, Marvel has decided to tell the character's origin story again, using a slightly different mythology. The main difference is the presence of appropriately named director Marc Webb, whose last film was the imaginative romantic-comedy (500) Days of Summer. Sure enough, the interpersonal drama is the best thing about this reboot. Much less successful is the action storyline, which feels awkwardly forced into the film to justify its blockbuster status.

A huge asset here is gifted lead actor Andrew Garfield, who takes on the role of Peter Parker with real passion. Peter is a 17-year-old science nerd in high school who has real depth due to his personal history. Growing up in New York with his aunt and uncle (Field and Sheen) after his parents disappeared, he's more than a little unsettled when the object of his secret crush, sexy-brainy Gwen (Stone), notices him. Meanwhile, he's bitten by a mutant spider and develops some strange powers, which he exercises by chasing down bad guys all over the city.
