Swallows And Amazons Review

Weak

After a number of films, TV series and stage adaptations, Arthur Ransome's beloved 1930 novel gets an all-new movie version. Shot in beautiful northern English settings with a lively cast, there's plenty of potential for it to become a classic in its own right. But screenwriter Andrea Gibb has tinkered with the plot, adding in a spy thriller plotline. And director Philippa Lowthorpe fails to muster up the suspense needed to make that work.

It's set in the summer of 1935, as Mrs Walker (Kelly Macdonald) takes her five adventurous children on holiday to the Lake District while her husband is working at sea. Staying with friends (Harry Enfield and Jessica Hynes), the four older children (teens Dane Hughes and Orla Hill and pre-teens Teddie-Rose Malleson-Allen and Bobby McCulloch) borrow the sailboat Swallow and head off to make camp on an island in the lake. There they imagine a series of high adventures involving two local girls (Hannah Jayne Thorp and Seren Hawkes), who are playing as pirates in their boat Amazon. They imagine the girls' uncle (Rafe Spall) as the villainous Captain Flint, unaware that he's actually a double agent being chased by a pair of truly villainous Russian spies (Andrew Scott and Dan Skinner).

As the film goes along, this espionage subplot takes over, which might not have been a bad thing if the writer and director had been able to generate some proper thrills. But while these scenes are nicely played by the cast, the action beats have absolutely no tension to them. They feel only partially shot and then frantically edited together, leaving key moments muddled. The more experienced actors manage to inject plenty of humour, emotion and edginess to their scenes (Spall and Scott are particularly good, as always), but the children seem to have been given very little direction, never quite nailing their characters. Although youngsters Malleson-Allen and McCulloch manage to engage the audience with their cute, plucky personalities.

From Ian McKellen To Ellen Page: 15 Gay Actors Who Usually Have Straight Roles

Ian McKellen Ellen Page Neil Patrick Harris Andrew Scott Matt Bomer

Ian McKellen has offered his own opinion about diversity in Hollywood following the #OscarsSoWhite controversy. He believes that it's not only black people who are being overlooked in the film industry, but gay actors too; especially since straight stars have indeed won Oscars for playing gay men (Tom Hanks, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Sean Penn) but never the other way round.

More: Ian McKellen talks LGBT rights

It is more frequent than one first might believe that gay people in the acting world are often playing straight roles - sometimes exclusively - and there are very few who have found themselves playing only gay characters. Here are just a few gay stars who've played gay roles in their careers:

Alice Through The Looking Glass - Teaser Trailer

Alice once again returns to Wonderland and meets a lot of familiar faces. This time her biggest enemy is Time, quite literally. As the Blue Caterpillar reminds her, 'You've been gone too long, Alice there are matters that might benefit from your attention. Friends cannot be neglected.' Instead of falling down a rabbit hole, this time Alice gains entry to wonderland through a large mirror which takes her to a topsy-turvy universe which could only be associated with Wonderland. There appear to be a few differences between the book and the new film; whilst Lewis Carol's original version of the book was based six months after the original tale, the inclusion of Time might mean that Linda Woolverton's version make time travel much quicker in Wonderland. Again, Carol used many chess analogies in the book, at the moment its unknown how much this will play a part in the movie. The majority of the lead cast from Tim Burton's 2010 version of Alice in Wonderland including Johnny Depp as Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen and Anne Hathaway as the White Queen. Alice Through The Looking Glass was directed by James Bobbin who previously worked on the 2011 Muppets film and Muppets Most Wanted.

James Bond - Spectre Review

Excellent

For his latest adventure, James Bond mixes the personal drama of Skyfall with the vintage globe-hopping action of the previous 23 movies. The result is an epic thriller packed with exhilarating set-pieces and dark surprises. Again directed by Sam Mendes, the film has a meaty tone from the astounding pre-titles sequence in Mexico City to the climax in North African. And it takes its time to build the suspense, mystery and drama in ways few blockbusters bother to do.

After the calamitous events at Skyfall, Bond (Daniel Craig) has gone rogue, following a videotaped message from his late boss (Judi Dench) to track a villain to Mexico, then continuing to Rome, where he woos the grieving widow (Monica Bellucci). Pursued by relentless goon Mr Hinx (Dave Bautista), he travels onward to Austria, he confronts an old nemesis (Jesper Christiansen), whose daughter Madeleine (Lea Seydoux) joins Bond to travel to Morocco to face the shady top boss Oberhauser (Christoph Waltz) in his secret lair. Meanwhile in London, the new M (Ralph Fiennes) is fighting to to keep MI6 in operation as new boss C (Andrew Scott) works to restructure British security as part of a global conglomerate.

Mendes stages this on a massive scale, with huge action sequences that are never rushed or choppy, beautifully shot by ace cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema. And it's all underpinned by darker personal drama between the characters, so every sequence features thoughtful conversation, witty banter, more clues to the larger mystery and then thrilling action. And as 007 hops from location to location filling in the bigger picture, the film feels like all of the classic Bond movies rolled into one.

Spectre Trailer

James Bond has never played by the rules, but this time he may have gone too far when he responds to a mysterious message by travelling to Mexico on an unauthorised mission to meet Lucia Sciarra, the widow of one of the world's most notorious criminal masterminds. She has information regarding a corrupt underground organisation known as SPECTRE, but he's still managed to seriously anger his boss M. Thus, Bond decides to continue his mission undercover, setting out to find a woman named Madeleine Swann who may be able to help him infiltrate the society, bring it down and save the world. Completion of the mission could also secure MI5's continued work, as the new boss of the Centre for National Security Max Denbigh becomes increasingly sceptical of its necessity. However, little does Bond know that he's also about to uncover some secrets about the SPECTRE head that he may rather have kept hidden.

Victor Frankenstein Trailer

Igor Strausman is the less thought about assistant of the insane but brilliant Victor Frankenstein. He's as genius as the passionate medical student he aids in experiments, but more rational when it comes to ethics. He does, however, share Frankenstein's obsession with eternal life and becomes equally as excited when they manage to bring a dead animal back to life. This in itself marks a unique scientific advancement, but Frankenstein's morbid curiosity fails to stop there. He wants to be able to create human life, but doing this involves sourcing body parts from mortuaries - and any other place they can find. Igor's timid nature, though deeply involved passion for the project, keeps him from doing his best to dissuade Frankenstein from completing their 'monster', until it's too late. Now they have a rogue beast on their hands, not to mention the police who are out for blood.

It seems James Bond's flighty career has all boiled down to this moment. He's in deep trouble when MI5 boss M finds out that he has set up his own secret mission to Mexico City, but it was a trip he couldn't afford to miss after discovering a message in regards to a top secret criminal organisation. With a new car and a new lover, now he just needs every trace of his existence erased as he sets out to Rome to uncover this sinister mystery, while on the way meeting the only person with inside knowledge of this group; Lucia Sciarra, the widow of a notorious crime boss who informs Bond about SPECTRE. It soon becomes clear that Bond has a new enemy to face off against, though with every member of SPECTRE having some sort of link to 007, maybe this time the enemy's not such a new face after all.

With MI6 discovering that he has a secret from his childhood, he is sent to on a mission to track down an old friend, now a high-ranking official in the villainous organisation. Suspecting the involvement of Mr. White (Jesper Christensen), a prominent member of the once-powerful Quantum, Bond soon discovers that he is about to go head-to-head with a more powerful, more dangerous group: SPECTRE (Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion), and its illusive and mysterious leader (Christoph Waltz).

Daniel Craig Raves About The Cast Of 'Spectre'

Daniel Craig Sam Mendes Christoph Waltz Dave Bautista Ralph Fiennes Ben Whishaw Naomie Harris Andrew Scott Lea Seydoux Monica Bellucci

"We've spent two years getting this together," said Daniel Craig while discussing the announcement of 'Spectre' "and there's been so much hard work and effort". For his fourth outing in the iconic role of James Bond, Craig will reunite with director Sam Mendes and the cast of 'Skyfall', as well as bringing an old foe back from the Sean Connery days.

When asked about the return of Mendes as the film's director, Craig responded by saying "He's the only guy for the job. He did such a wonderful job with 'Skyfall' and came down to do the next one and it just seemed to be the obvious choice." Following on from 'Skyfall' is not going to be an easy task, however, as the third film in the Bond reboot series made over 1 billion USD worldwide and took home two Academy Awards. Furthermore, the recent Sony hacks have revealed that 'Spectre' was supposedly coming in far over budget, and with a script that needed drastic work.
