Angela Lansbury has joined the cast of Mary Poppins Returns, the upcoming sequel to the much-loved 1964 musical.

The film stars Emily Blunt in the lead role, alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Wishaw, Emily Mortimer, and Colin Firth, as well as original star Dick van Dyke, who will be making a cameo.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lansbury will star as the Balloon Lady, who featured as part of P.L. Travers' original series of children's books. The character appears in Mary Poppins causing mischief in the park during one of Poppins and the Banks children’s trips.

Last week Disney announced that production on the film was currently underway at Shepperton Studios in Surrey, England, along with revealing some exciting plot details.

The studio’s press release stated that the film will be set in 1930s depression-era London and is based on PL Travers’ additional seven books. The film begins with Michael and Jane now all grown up and Michael living on Cherry Tree Lane with his three children and their housekeeper, Ellen. 

But after Michael suffers a personal loss, Mary Poppins will re-enter the lives of Banks family. Poppins, along with street lamplighter Jack, will use her ‘unique magical skills to help the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives,’ while also introducing Michael’s children to ‘a new assortment of colourful and whimsical characters, including her eccentric cousin Topsy’, played by Meryl Streep.
