We’ve been trying not to listen to them, but there have been plenty of reports circulating that Angelina Jolie intends to quit acting. Even more worrying to hear, it’s being reported that she has plans to act in just one more project before throwing in the towel. Riding high off the success of Maleficent you’d think Jolie would be buzzing off the fact that she’s reached the zenith of her career rather than thinking about calling it quits.

Angelina Jolie CleopatraJolie has been dropping hints about the future of her career in an interview with BBC radio

So, what is the project that could potentially be Angelina Jolie’s swan song? It’s looking like it will be the upcoming Cleopatra film that’s been in the works for what feels like forever.

Jolie told BBC radio, “For Cleopatra, we’ve been working on it. There’s been lots of different ideas of directors and a lot of different discussions. The script has been written by Eric Roth, who is a dear friend and a brilliant writer.”

The screenplay is allegedly based on the 2010 Pulitzer Prize winning biography by Stacy Schiff, Cleopatra: A Life. Directors rumoured to have been taking up the project have included Ang Lee, David Fincher and James Cameron, although none have definitely agreed to direct.

The actress and mother-of-six discusses the eponymous character in more length: “She’s complicated, it’s complicated to get this one right. She’s complicated. But I think we’re getting there. It’s very close. So if we can pull it off…I imagine that the preparation for it is going to be big."  Hmmm...Sounds complicated.

Cleopatra was the last true pharaoh of Ancient Egypt. Hailing from the Ptolemy dynasty, she is most famous for her affairs with both Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, both to whom she bore children. When, in 30BC, Egypt lost the Battle of Actium to Rome, both Cleopatra and Antony committed suicide, her famously using an asp bite to the bosom. She has been a character of intrigue throughout history, regularly painted as a femme fatale, and was famously portrayed by Elizabeth Taylor in 1963.

Further hinting at her retirement from acting in her BBC radio interview, Jolie continued: “It’s one of those [roles] you feel like maybe that’s the one you put everything into and that’s where you end it. That’s where you finish, in a great way. You kind of go, ‘What could you do beyond that one?’ Put it all into that one.”

Angelina Jolie CleopatraJolie has previously said she wants to focus more on her humanitarian roles
