Angelina Jolie will be presented with an Oscar for her humanitarian work. The 38-year-old actress will receive be awarded the honorary Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award is presented "to an individual in the motion picture industry whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry", according to a press release from the Academy.

In a press release, on 5th September, from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Jolie was highly praised for being "an impassioned advocate for humanitarian causes, traveling widely to promote organizations and social justice efforts such as the Prevent Sexual Violence Initiative. The release went on to reference Jolie's philanthropic exploits relating to her work with the Council of Foreign Relations and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The Academy also commended her appointment to her position as "Special Envoy of High Commissioner António Guterres in 2012 after twelve years of service" to the UNHCR.  The Academy also commented on her film projects which highlight humanitarian issues, including A Mighty Heart and In the Land of Blood and Honey.

Jolie responded to the release publically; she wrote on twitter thanking the academy for the award and congratulated her fellow winners Angela Lansbury, Steve Martin and Piero Tosi on being award governor awards. 

The awards will be presented on November 16th at the Academy's 5th Annual Governors Awards. On the subject of this awards ceremony, the Academy's President Cheryl Boone Isaacs said (as reported in the press release), "The Governors Awards pay tribute to individuals who've made indelible contributions in their respective fields. We couldn't be more excited for this year's honorees and look forward to bringing their peers and colleagues together to celebrate their extraordinary achievements."

The honorees will be presented with a golden Oscar statuette. Jolie's will sit beside her previous Oscar for Girl Interrupted, for which she won the award for Best Supporting Actress. Only 34 Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Awards have been presented, previous winners include Oprah Winfrey, Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn.
