We honestly don’t know how many times we have watched the teaser trailer for Disney’s Maleficent now. It's defintely into double figures, that's all we know for sure.  As huge Disney fans (worryingly so for our age) the trailer is a smorgasbord of all of the elements that we look for in a great Disney movie.  A beautiful princess, a magical kingdom, a menacingly wicked antagonist.

Maleficent is a new take on the 1959 animated film Sleeping Beauty, and sees the story from the eyes of the ‘Mistress of Evil’, Maleficent. The catalysts which lead to her cursing the Princess Aurora are explored, and from the trailer we can gather they have remained true to certain aspects of the original story.  From what we can tell there is definitely a feud between Maleficent and Aurora's father, because of which she places a curse upon the young princess who will go on to prick her finger on a spinning wheel.

We love how the trailer opens with the traditional image of the Disney palace before panning away into an entirely more sinister shot of a magical forest out of which Maleficent eerily emerges. The ominous music seems to rise to a crescendo as Aurora’s lone voice is heard talking to Maleficent, telling her “I know who you are. You’ve been watching over me my whole life. I know you’re there. Your shadow has been following me ever since I was small. Don’t be afraid.” Images of a kingdom coming to ruin, as well as a young Aurora (Vivienne Jolie-Pitt) running through a field flash on the screen before Maleficent replies, “I’m not afraid”. “Then come out”, Aurora replies.  In terrifying tones, Jolie replies, “Then you’ll be afraid.” Ooh, that seriously just gave us the shivers!

More: why Angelina Jolie had to let her daughter have a role in Maleficent

Jolie sounds suitably terrifying, while her makeup and costume is so frightful that even her son Pax ran away from her because he was afraid! They’ve certainly made Jolie up to look exactly like the original character. Well, you know what they say. If it ain’t broke!

As Maleficent emerges from the shadows the music climaxes as we see the thorn bush which the evil witch magically surrounds the palace with in the 1959 movie to ensure that the prince can’t reach Aurora and break the curse. The recognisable silhouette of Maleficent is visible with the rays of green magic rising from her black wings.  Brenton Thwaites has been cast as Prince Phillip, we wonder if the Disney producers have stayed true to the original story and it is his character that is attempting to break the curse?
