Angelina Jolie’s Disney blockbuster ‘Maleficent’ has taken $69.4 million at the final U.S box office count for the weekend. That means it’s now pretty much recouped its $180 million budget in worldwide takings and is well on its way to making a bucket load of cash. The competition turned out to be weak, with Seth MacFarlane’s ‘A Million Ways to Die in the West’ flat lining with $17 million.

The comedy was almost beaten by Fox’s X:Men: Days of Future Past, which itself dropped 64% in its second week. Elsewhere, the critically derided Blended and Neighbors (now in its fourth week) were neck and neck for the fifth spot with Seth Rogen’s comedy losing out.

Edge of TomorrowTom Cruise in 'Edge of Tomorrow'

Though it’s probably unlikely that Maleficent will hang on to the No.1 this weekend, it’s certainly not out of the question. Tom Cruise hits theaters with his well-received sci-fi Edge of Tomorrow from Warner Bros. The movie has taken $20 million in 28 markets though with Cruise and Emily Blunt in the leads, it’s thought EOT could pull in big U.S. crowds.

Elsewhere, 20th Century Fox give a full release to The Fault in Our Stars with Divergent’s Shailene Woodley. The movie seems to have been released about 6 times so far, but Fox are hoping to capitalize on its lead star’s rise to fame in recent months and it should perform relatively strongly.
