Anne Hathaway is to play the lead role in 'Colossal'.

The Oscar-winning actress has signed on to star in the eagerly-awaited project from director Nacho Vigalondo, which has been described as a cross between 'Godzilla' and 'Lost in Translation'.

The 32-year-old star - who recently appeared in Christopher Nolan's 'Interstellar' - has been cast in the role of Gloria, who moves back to her hometown after losing her job as well as her fiance.

Thereafter, Gloria learns that a giant lizard has attacked Tokyo, Japan and most shockingly, she seems to have a psychic connection with it.

Gloria then sets about the task of trying to determine why she has such a major impact on the fate of the world.

Anne recently caused a stir when she appeared in a one-woman stage show in New York, in which she played a fighter pilot sidelined after childbirth to become a drone operator.

Prior to that, the actress starred in 'Song One', in which she played a graduate student who traveled to New York to see her brother who's in a coma.

Anne's husband Adam Shulman was a producer on the movie and she revealed it was a harmonious experience.

She said: ''I know how irritating this answer is going to be. I was always happy to see him when I got home.''
