UK Passes Most Useless Legislation Tweak Ever: You Can Now Copy CDs, Hurrah!

Apple

If you’ve ever burned/ripped a CD onto your mp3 player, mobile phone or laptop, then you’ve committed a crime. In fact, legislation is so out of touch with current practise, 85% of the people surveyed considered the above to be legal, prompting a chance of pace from the government that allows people to replicate content such as CD’s, DVD’s and e-books “for private purposes such as format shifting or backup”.

Apple queuing The kids are queuing for the latest iPad, not buying CDs, stupid government

It’s one of the most useless and meaningless changes to legislation, and probably could have slipped under the radar – like so many burned copies of DVDs and albums – without anyone making a fuss about it. But it is startling to think that copyright holders expected consumers to make multiple purchases of, say, an album if they wanted one copy on their phone and one on CD to play in the car.

ITunes Radio Hitting The UK By 'Early 2014', People In The Know Say

Music streaming service iTunes radio will be hitting English speaking countries, like the UK, Australia, in early 2014, Bloomberg report. If the reports are true, then Apple are making their move before their rival, Pandora.

The news comes after Apple reached agreements for international rights with the Universal Music Group and other record labels, something Pandora can’t do; the Oakland-based company relies on rights granted by governments, which limits its offering to the US, Australia and New Zealand currently.

Apple Refund Breaking Bad Fans Who Paid Double For Season 5

Bryan Cranston Apple

Breaking Bad is good, and we’re pretty sure people would love to support it with as much money as possible. Trouble is, there are plenty of Walter Whites in this world unwilling to embark on a life-destroying met empire, who simply have to watch the pennies.

So charging them twice for season five, Apple? Not cool.

Apple's IRadio Close To Confirmation

Apple

Apple’s dream of a web radio service is becoming ever closer to reality, with The Verge reporting that it’s set to sign an agreement with major record label Universal Music Group this week about use of its artists, with another with Warner Music also well on its way to being finalised.

The deal could potentially be huge for Apple, as it aims to launch the iRadio, service similar to that of the US-based Pandora, which acts as a streaming and recommendation service based on the specific tastes and selections of the user. Apple needs deals with all three major labels to progress, with Sony the further behind on agreement.

Obviously anything set up by Apple has the potential to completely dominate its competition, like Spotify and Pandora. Given that the company has the largest music downloading service in the world, in iTunes, the chance for its tens of millions of users to switch from cloud-based storage to an updated model is likely to make it a strong threat. In February, lest we forget, it reported that 25 billion songs had been purchased and downloaded from iTunes. However Pandora has a strong chance of standing its ground too, as it recently announced that it had reached more than 200 million users. You can’t help but feel no deal is going to be fair on the musicians whatever happens.

A 22-year-old Economics student from Hanover, Germany, has received a gift card worth 10,000 Euros for downloading the 25th billion iTunes track. Phillip Luepke downloaded the obscure techno song 'Monkey Drums (Goksel Vancin Remix) by British DJ Chase Buch, and resultantly got an email from Apple, telling him the good news.

"I was very surprised to hear the news," Luepke told Reuters, "I woke up this morning and had an email from Apple saying I had the 25 billionth download. In fact, I didn't quite believe it at first. It's a new feeling for me." Phillip came across the dance track while at a disco last Saturday night, using the song-identification application Shazam to look up its name before downloading it the following evening. Luepke says he will celebrate winning the 10,000 euros iTunes gift voucher by enjoying a few beers with friends.

Apple launched the iTunes store in April 2003 and has averaged around 15,000 song downloads each minute. The store has a catalogue of more than 26 million songs from 119 countries.

Crack Open The Champagne! Apple Reaches 25 Billion Download Milestone

Apple

iTunes, the online music retailer from Apple has passed a significant milestone, having sold a staggering 25 billion song downloads since its inception nearly a decade ago. iTunes has become a significant source of revenue for Apple and Billboard reports that 21.6 million songs are downloaded a day. For those that don’t have time to do the maths, that’s 15,000 songs per minute. In 2008, iTunes surpassed Walmart to become the largest music retailer in the USA.

Apple’s Senior VP of Internet Software and Services, Eddy Cue, told Billboard “We are grateful to our users whose passion for music over the past 10 years has made iTunes the number one music retailer in the world.” In the US alone, iTunes has a 29% share in the market, leaving Walmart and Target dwindling in its wake. To celebrate the 25 billion song landmark, Apple gave a 10,000 Euro gift card to the person who made that all-important milestone download. Phillip Lupke had downloaded ‘Monkey Drums’ (Goksel Vancin Remix) by Chase Buch.

It’s not just music sales that have helped boost Apple’s revenues, though. iTunes users can also download digital books, games, mobile phone apps, magazines and movies. In essence, it’s big business and Apple have a firm grip on the global downloads market. iTunes have a catalogue of over 26 million tunes, spanning both major and independent label releases, as well as artists who self-publish their music. It boasts a database of 435 million active user accounts.

AC/DC Give In To The Digital Age And Sell Music On ITunes

AC DC Beatles Led Zeppelin Apple

AC/DC - one of the biggest bands to resist the transition into the digital age of music - have allowed their entire back catalogue of rock music to be sold by e-distribution giants Apple, via iTunes.

"AC/DC's thunderous and primal rock and roll has excited fans for generations with their raw and rebellious brand of music, which also resonates with millions of new fans discovering AC/DC everyday," Columbia Records and Apple, said in a statement announcing the deal, Reuters reports. "Their growing legion of fans will now experience the intensity of AC/DC's music in a way that has never been heard before," they added. Fans will be able to buy the whole lot - studio albums, live recordings and compilations - for £99.99. Alternatively, if you don't want the extra bit, and just fancy the 16 studio albums, they'll be available in a download bundle for £79.99, meaning each album will cost less than £5.

Other huge acts like The Beatles and Led Zeppelin had previously resisted Apple in their quest to distribute music via their hugely popular iTunes format. This was largely to do with business clashes between Apple Records, part of Apple Corps (started by the Beatles) and Apple Computers in the case of The Beatles, and Atlantic Records in the case of Led Zeppelin, but, like AC/DC, Apple eventually came to agreements with both bands, and their respective record companies, to allow their music to be sold by them.
