Coachella 2014: Was It The Best Year Yet?

Coachella Outkast Beck Arcade Fire Calvin Harris

The Coachella Festival has closed its doors for another year, leaving a bunch of sweating Californian hipsters and A-list celebrities to pack up and dream of 2015. Many had described the 2014 line-up as one of the most interesting and diverse shows yet - but did it manage to live up to the hype?

Arcade FireArcade Fire Headlined This Year's Coachella Festival

"Who was Sunday's Coachella headliner?" asked the Los Angeles Times in its review of the festival  "The band that played last, to wrap up the weekend on the main stage? Or the act that drew probably the weekend's biggest crowd, and certainly its most fevered rush of fans?"

Coachella Festival is nearly here, bringing with it one hell of a weekend chock full of great food, exciting entertainment and, most importantly, amazing music.

Arguably California's most eagerly anticipated event of the year, Coachella settles at the Empire Polo Club in Indio once again for the fifteenth year running between April 11th and 13th on the first weekend and April 18th and 20th on the second. It's not unheard of that a music festival was so good they had to hold it twice, but as of 2012 it has become a no-brainer for Coachella. In a nutshell, it is basically a big playground for grown-ups - though of course it is a family friendly event - featuring activities such as the 3 Legged Race, the Beauty Bar, the art studios, dodgeball and the almighty Pie Eating Contest, all while you're munching on a variety of cuisine from around the state and rocking out to some of the best bands you will ever hear.

Could This Be The Lineup For Glastonbury Festival 2014?

Glastonbury Festival Prince Kasabian Arcade Fire Adele

Some acts may still be rumours and others are yet to be confirmed, but we have a strong suspicion that this is what the Glastonbury Festival Lineup for 2014 will end up looking like! Eek, we can't wait! The three day music festival is the hottest (and most quickly sold out) ticket of the year, and with a (rumoured) lineup like this, who’s surprised?

prince glastonbury Prince is rumoured to be performing at Glastonbury Festival 2014

Indie rock band Arcade Fire have already confirmed their Friday night slot on the Pyramid Stage at the festival. The Canadian band are fortunate to be playing on the Friday night before everybody has had a sleepless few days and energy starts to die down!  Actually, on second thought, Glastonbury Festival goers never really lose any energy.  There must be something in the air which keeps them all going.

Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampire in the City

Vampire Weekend 'Modern Vampire in the City' - 'Modern Vampires in the City' makes it three for three for the New Yorkers and their latest release could very well be their best yet. It shows evolution for the band, but they have retained that essential quality that made 'Contra' and their self-titled debut such wonderfully upbeat and genuine pleasures to listen to each time. 'Modern Vampire in the City' is also the release that marks Vampire Weekend as a band that should be taken seriously, but one who you can still have immense fun with. 'Diane Young' is yet another indie floor filler, standing shoulder to shoulder with previous bangers 'A-Punk' and 'Cousins.' Where the album really excels, however, is when VW reach out to new quarters and sound completely inimitable. The yelps of 'Ya Hey' bring fun to a song that essentially deals with the theme of lost conviction, the graceful 'Hanna Hunt' erupts in the most complete song released this year and album opener 'Obvious Bicycle' sets the whole thing in motion with its refreshingly angelic melodies and steady, train-like clunks that lie beneath all the splendour. Vampire Weekend are no longer the Brooklyn minions rattling at the gates of eminence, the gates have been swung open for them and the welcoming committee should have made them feel rightly at home.

Arcade Fire are officially headliners at Glastonbury 2014! After much speculation and finger crossing, the Canadian alt-rockers have been confirmed as the first headline act for 2014's outing at Worth Farm in Somerset next June.

The band confirmed their billing themselves, taking to Twitter to reveal a list of European dates due to take place in the same week at the end of June. As well as the stop off at Worthy Farm, AF will also be paying Rock In Roma and Villa Franca Di Verona a visit, as well as headlining a show at Marlay Park in Dublin. The band's own announcement was later followed up by a tweet from festival organiser Emily Eavis, with a statement from the festival's own Twitter page reading: "We're very pleased to announce that Arcade Fire will headline the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury 2014 on Friday 27th June."

The 2014 Grammy Awards will take place in January 2014, with the full list of nominees being revealed over the weekend. Jay-Z was the most capped nominee, with nine nods in total, whilst Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Kendrick Lamar and Daft Punk were also among the list of potential winners, but there were a number of artists who were nowhere to be seen on the list of nominations.

After their shock win in 2011, Arcade Fire have been ignored this time

Despite their last album, The Suburbs, being a runaway success at the 2011 Grammy Awards, Arcade Fire are nowhere to be seen on next year's list. Their fourth album, Reflektor, was met with almost universal praise and some critics noted that it was an improvement form their latest release, but it seems as though the Grammy committee weren't as impressed as everyone else. The Canadian band don't even appear in the Best Alternative categories, however it is pleasing to see Tame Impala and Vampire Weekend among the nominees in this category, especially considering VW released one of the albums of the year with Modern Vampires of the City.

Arcade Fire - Blackpool Empress Ballroom 27th November 2013 Live Review

'Do you like rock and roll music? 'Cause I don't know if I do', interjects Win Butler at the start of opener 'Normal Person'. Except it isn't any ordinary beginning. Indeed, this show, one of only five UK dates Arcade Fire (billed as The Reflektors) will play this year, is anything but normal. With no support act and the band scheduled to appear on stage a full ninety minutes after doors open, sceptics would probably have expected it to be little more than an exercise in getting the band on and off in as short a time frame as possible. Wham, bam and thank you mam. How wrong they could be. Unbelievably so, in fact. Because even before queuing fans are allowed inside the venue, there's a hive of activity taking place around the venue's foyer. Fans bedecked in all manner of fancy dress and 'Reflektor' style masks mimicking the album cover parade outside, joined by a mariachi band - the one off the Doritos television advert no less - where they'll march to a nearby tram stop, the hummed refrain of 'Wake Up' ringing through the Blackpool night sky. As the tram pulls in, six figures donning large papier-mache heads depicting Win Butler and co. step off and pandemonium ensues. Is it the band or a group of well dressed and overly fixated fans? It doesn't really matter; such is the party atmosphere their appearance has generated. By the time the procession reaches Blackpool's Winter Gardens where the ornate Empress Ballroom is situated, it's already created a major talking point. Was that really Win, Regine and co. arriving at the gig via public transport?

Arcade Fire - Live Review

The truth is possibly revealed when showtime begins. As the six figures arrive on stage, greeted by the familiar introductory bassline from 'Rebellion (Lies)', arguably their best-known song from debut long player 'Funeral', it takes a further thirty seconds or so for the actual band to appear, wave the doppelgangers away and launch into 'Normal Person'. At this point the room is stunned into silence. But then this will be no ordinary run of the mill gig. They play a set largely consisting of material taken from 'Reflektor', an album whose early reviews bordered on the unfavourable. This was mainly because the PR campaign involved sending journalists to a listening party in a swanky London bar, plying them with free booze while the album played in the foreground then sending them away to construct an article based on that experience. Since then, many writers who participated in that process have been forced to eat humble pie, admitting their negative statements of intent may have been crafted a little too hastily. For the rest of us, 'Reflektor''s appeal has been one of steady growth, an album that blossoms with familiarity rather than instantly punching for the jugular. So when 'Normal Person' quickly segues into the robotic electronica of 'Flashbulb Eyes', it's met with whoops, screams and an all-inclusive communal spirit not witnessed since the halcyon days of acid house some twenty-five years earlier.

They follow that with 'Neighbourhood #3 (Power Out)'; the first time Arcade Fire delve into their back catalogue this evening only serving to raise excitement levels even further. A handful of songs from the new record arrive in quick succession, culminating in 'Reflektor''s standpoint and most accessible number 'Afterlife', which actually feels like a historical moment in time, neck hairs raised accordingly along with 3,000 voices singing the song's chorus back to them. It's at the song's juncture that Win Butler smiles before claiming this to be the best show he and his band have ever played. The Regine Chassagne sung 'Sprawl II', the only number aired from 2010's 'The Suburbs' long player this evening, gives way to a tumultuous 'Wake Up' as vocal chords erupt in cataclysmic delight all around. The obligatory cover comes next. Having already paid homage to Devo and The Clash at previous shows on this tour, it's The Ramones' turn to be given an Arcade Fire makeover next with 'Today Your Love, Tomorrow The World' off their 1976 self-titled debut being given an orchestral chamber pop reworking.  Closing with 'Here Comes The Night Time', another of 'Reflektor''s most immediate moments, on any other night this would be the perfect finale. But then, to reiterate once more, this really isn't any other night.

Arcade Fire Drop Huge Glastonbury 2014 Hint: Will They Headline?

Arcade Fire Spike Jonze Jo Whiley

Arcade Fire's lead singer Win Butler has hinted that his band are gearing up to play at UK festivals in 2014. Speaking to BBC Radio 2's Jo Whiley, Butler cryptically advised that Arcade Fire's fans should "get [their] wellies ready." Asked if any festivals were lined up for next year, he said "Yeah, I hope so. It's a special experience."

Arcade Fire - Reflektor Album Review

Coming off the back of their most successful album to date, Arcade Fire are at a fork in their career, with their paths open and varied, but with no clear direction. Reflektor was their chance to either stick with what they have or twist and try out a new card. With their power at its peak, that same path may have looked tempting, but for a band as accomplished as Arcade Fire, their route was always going to lead them down another path.

Arcade Fire - Reflektor Album Review

Listening through Reflektor for the first time you can sense the ambition running through the band as they recorded the album and this feeling doesn't go away either. The album is jovial, danceable and probably the most upbeat sounding release from the band to date. Yet there is still a darkness imbued under the surface of the songs, found mostly within Win Butler's lyrics, not to mention the usual foreboding harmonies found scattered. Co-producer James Murphy's influence can be heard all over the album: in those funky synth beats and fused dance rhythms, but the credit for the steps the band have taken between now and 2011 can't be attributed solely to Murphy, as this is a niche that the group have found themselves, hidden away in the musical corners of Haiti and Jamaica and in their own psyche.

The coming together of the at odds pair - the often melancholic Arcade Fire and the down right disco loving Murphy - first catches you off guard on 'We Exists,' a sonic rock number sewn together with sharp chords thrust over a liquid bass synth, before stumbling into an Eno-inspired grove in the dying minutes. Its place at the beginning of the album makes sense, because it still feels as though the bad are still trying to find what they're looking for with the album, something they never really do discover, which is really something that benefits the intrigue and mysticism of the album.

Arcade Fire Jump Straight To No. 1 On Billboard 200 With 'Reflektor'

Arcade Fire

Arcade Fire are at the top of the musical spectrum right now, enjoying critical and now commercial success with their fourth album, Reflektor. Whilst their origins are humble and their rise to international acclaim and success has not been overnight - the band have been alternative darlings since their first EP and a steady - unfaltering output was always going to put them at the top spot eventually.

Arcade Fire
Arcade Fire won't be feeling blue with their success

Their achievement is still a major one though and the band have more than earned their moment in the sun. According to Nielsen SoundScan (via Billboard), the follow-up to the Grammy-winning The Suburbs has already shifted 140,000 copies in its first week alone and could go on to reach gold certification in the US by Christmas. This is no small feat for frontman Win Butler's band. And given that Reflektor is their most ambitious and challenging listen to date, the critical acclaim is even more impressive. More so, it's a refreshing sign that, in an age where style reigns supreme over substance, there are still respectable bands out there and ones who are able to score mainstream success.

The YouTube Music Awards will celebrate the achievements made online by both well-known and some more obscure (outside the world of viral videos) musicians for the first time this Sunday (3 Oct.) and the organisers have pulled out all the stops to make sure that the awards show starts with a bang. In fact, the awards show will be so extravagant that the man in charge of bringing it to life - Spike Jonze - doesn't even know what to expect.

Jonze, the director of countless award-winning music videos such as Weezer's 'Buddy Holly' and 'Sabotage' by The Beastie Boys, has been brought in as creative director of the event, tasked with making the awards show one to remember and one to challenge the established musical showcases, such as the MTV VMAs. Alongside fellow music video veteran Chris Milk and executive producers Vice Media and Sunset Lane Entertainment, Jonze isn't planning on making a showcase that can be easily compared to the VMAs or the Billboard Awards, for example, as they are going for a completely unique take on the tried and tested music awards ceremony.

Quite Simply, Arcade Fire's 'Reflektor' Is Brilliant, Say The Critics

Arcade Fire

2013 has been the year of the comeback. The Rolling Stones did it, triumphantly. Bowie did it too, shocking everyone with an unannounced renaissance, one that lead to a Mercury nomination. But more contemporary artists, with roots in the younger demographic have returned too, like Daft Punk, and Arcade Fire.

Arcade FireThey're back, and they haven't relented on quality

The Montreal rockers permeated the eardrums of rebellious school kids, indie hipsters and nostalgic parents simultaneously, and as they approached their follow up to The Suburbs, Grammy in hand and a reputation to uphold, they could have been forgiven for succumbing to the increased pressure.

Arcade Fire have returned with their fourth album, Reflektors, after three years of working on the project since releasing their universally acclaimed third album The Suburbs. On Thursday, 24 October, the band decided to respond to the leaks by streaming the album themselves, uploading the full, one hour twenty five minutes of the album on to YouTube, for fans to enjoy free of charge. The lyrics video, set to the Brazilian film Black Orpheus, gives fans a first-time chance to listen to the three-year labour of love, an album that has seen them team up with musicians from across the world (including David Bowie) to craft their own, unique sound.

Arcade Fire Play Secret Show At Brooklyn Warehouse On Desolate Street

Arcade Fire

Arcade Fire emerged from behind a black curtain at a full moon masquerade in Brooklyn on Friday night (October 18, 2013) to play to around a thousand 'golden ticket' holders at a re-purposed warehouse in the artistic haven of Bushwick.

Those lucky enough to secure tickets were instructed to dress in either formal attire or festive costumes and most complied. Wolves, sailors and a banana-man squeezed into the old building on a desolate street, reports Billboard.com.

The interior of the red-brick building had been decked out with streamers, disco balls, mirrored pyramids and multi-colored string lighting. It looked like a 1970s disco prom.

Jonze is responsible for directing films such as Being John Malkovich and Where the Wild Things Are as well as countless award-winning music videos for such artists as REM, Bjork and the Chemical Brothers. On the subject of the awards show, Jonze said he is excited to be involved and continued by saying, "I want to find out if we can make a whole night just about making things." He continued by proposing not merely performances but "live collaborations."

The week after that will be The Miley Cyrus Show, with the oft-talked about star serving as both host and musical guest in what will no doubt be a sure fire way to boost the ratings, for better or worse. Her 5 October performance can work one of two ways for Miley, either she talks her recent behaviour in good jest and routinely lampoons herself and her newly acquired stage antics, or she gets all uppity and people stop pitying her and start actually hating her. Hopefully, it'll be the first option.

Arcade Fire Plan New Music For September Release

Arcade Fire

It has emerged that Arcade Fire are planning to release the follow-up to 2010's The Suburbs this September, with a source close to the band confirming the update to the news blog of Revolt TV. The blog said that it only learnt the date of the release and no other details, with the album set to go on sale on September 9.

The band have been working on the album pretty solidly since coming off of their extensive tour on the back of the release of their third album. Although no tracks from the still-untitled album have emerged online yet, we do know that the Canadian rockers have been working with DFA founder and former LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy to produce the September-release.

Earlier this year, Murphy said that he hasn't had too much of an influence on the seven member group - led by Win Butler and Régine Chassagne - as they are all seasoned studio experts. He also expressed his excitement over the album and told the Daily Star in June, "The album is going great. I am too in the middle of it to know which way it will go in the end. But it's going to be a fantastic record."

David Bowie's Where Are We Now: Is The Old Master Bowing Out?

David Bowie Arcade Fire David Gilmour Pink Floyd

David Bowie, Soho, New YorkA Rare Shot Of David Bowie Wandering Alone In New York

That clattering sound you thought you heard this week? Yeah, that was a thousand music journalists collectively dropping their pens when David Bowie suddenly released a new single - Where Are We Now? - on his 66th birthday. The British icon, now settled in Manhattan, also announced his first album in 10 years - The Next Day - set for release on March. Bowie, a forward thinking songwriter, addresses mortality and the past on his latest single, fuelling speculation as to whether the singer's latest record could well be his last.

There were murmuring of Bowie's return to the fray in 2012, though most expected him to appear at the London Olympics opening ceremony, sing Heroes and hop back on a plane to the East Coast of America. It never happened, and fans of the superstar were left sighing as Danny Boyle instead screened filmed footage of Bowie during his whistle-stop tour of Britain's pop history. Reviews of Where Are We Now? have been wholly positive, with our own Simon Jay Catling musing "this is a track that maintains the hallmarks of its creator's canon - lyrical signposts, themes that are never fully decoded, questions that open up more questions." Luke Turner of The Quietus said, "The song itself, well, it's proper Bowie, but with a really gorgeous swell, and at times heart-rending reflective tone to it. Brilliant stuff. My word." The Daily Telegraph - who also offered a positive review - quoted a spokesman as saying the track came "from out of nowhere," adding, "Throwing shadows and avoiding the industry treadmill is very David Bowie despite his extraordinary track record that includes album sales in excess of 130 million not to mention his massive contributions in the area of art, fashion, style, sexual exploration and social commentary."
