Coachella Weekend Two: Outkast Pull It Back, Pharrell Brings More Surprise And Arcade Fire Leave Us Confused

Coachella Pharrell Williams Arcade Fire Outkast

The Coachella festival has closed its gates for another year, but not before it got an almighty second weekend send off. Last weekend the festival brought plenty of star performances, special surprises and maybe a slight tinge of disappointment when it came to one of the most anticipated acts. So how did weekend two fare and most importantly were Outkast any better the second time around?

OutkastOutkast had to prove themselves after last weekend's disaster

Last weekend Outkast’s much hyped reunion was met with resounding negativity as poor sound quality and bad production values marred their set. One week later and it seems the duo have learnt from their mistakes as Billboard reports Andre 3000 and Big Boi took to the stage, “strutting with an emboldened confidence light-years from the standoffish attitude that came through the first weekend.”

After months of speculation, the official line-up has been confirmed for the 2014 Glastonbury Festival, which will be held from the 27th to the 29th June this year. The festival tweeted this year's snazzy line-up poster which listed a tonne of previously unconfirmed acts. Sadly, and despite the rumours, it doesn't look like Prince will be getting funky at Glasto but the appearance of Elbow, Arcade Fire, Kasabian, The Black Keys, and Jack White should make up for the Purple One's absence.

Noel Gallagher Goes On The Rampage. Arcade Fire, Look Away Now

Nobody escaped unscathed from Noel Gallagher's summary of music in 2013, apart from maybe Kanye West and David Bowie. The former Oasis man agreed to phone interview with Rolling Stone magazine to chat about his "f*cking shit year" hanging around the house and waiting for the year end.

Things started off on a positive note, with Gallagher hailing David Bowie's surprise comeback record The Next Day as a "f*cking masterpiece, saying, "I love it. Nobody has the right to be that f*cking good at this point in their career. Apart from Neil Young, all of the people that are in his league are basically f*cking shit. Do you know what I mean?"

Arcade Fire Evolve On 'Reflektor' But Is It An Advancement Or A Step In The Same Direction Still?

Arcade Fire

Arcade Fire are a band used to receiving widespread praise for their albums and when they released new album Reflektor earlier this week it was more of the same as the critics came out in force to herald the return of the Canadian alt-rockers. But behind this hit parade is an unfamiliar presence; negative, or at least lukewarm, critical reception. But what is it that makes the group's fourth record such a divisive one?

Arcade Fire
Arcade Fire; still feeling blue, but now with bongos

The band have clearly been influenced by co-producers Markus Dravs and former LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy, who have brought with them a touch of white boy funk that is far removed from the melancholy of 'Une Année Sans Lumiere' or 'My Body Is A Cage,' but the pieces from the past albums are still all there, in tact and functioning. There is a new edge to the band on Reflektors, as they widen their surroundings and bring in a wealth of outside influences to create a double album comparable (to some) to "U2's Achtung Baby and Radiohead's Kid A."

Arcade Fire Put New Album 'Reflektors' Up To Stream For Free

Arcade Fire David Bowie

Arcade Fire have returned with their fourth album, Reflektors, after three years of working on the project since releasing their universally acclaimed third album The Suburbs. When the album leaked online earlier this month, prompting a complaint from the band, who said the leak was an unfinished, poor quality listen, the Canadian group have hit back by leaking the album in full themselves.

On Thursday, 24 October, the band decided to respond to the leaks by streaming the album themselves, uploading the full, one hour twenty five minutes of the album on to YouTube, for fans to enjoy free of charge. The lyrics video, set to the Brazilian film Black Orpheus, gives fans a first-time chance to listen to the three-year labour of love, an album that has seen them team up with musicians from across the world (including David Bowie) to craft their own, unique sound.

Arcade Fire Play Secret Show At Brooklyn Warehouse On Desolate Street

Arcade Fire

Arcade Fire emerged from behind a black curtain at a full moon masquerade in Brooklyn on Friday night (October 18, 2013) to play to around a thousand 'golden ticket' holders at a re-purposed warehouse in the artistic haven of Bushwick.

Those lucky enough to secure tickets were instructed to dress in either formal attire or festive costumes and most complied. Wolves, sailors and a banana-man squeezed into the old building on a desolate street, reports Billboard.com.

The interior of the red-brick building had been decked out with streamers, disco balls, mirrored pyramids and multi-colored string lighting. It looked like a 1970s disco prom.

YouTube will be hosting its own music awards show next month and it's snagged Lady GaGa, Eminem and Arcade Fire as its headliners.

Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga, as conventional as usual, will be headlining the YouTube award show.

The show is set to take place on 3 November and the internet site is not penny-pinching when it comes to the acts, organisers or location. Quite the contrary, in addition to having a trio of heavy weight performers, the ceremony will be held at Pier 36 in New York and designed by a team led by Spike Jonze. Jonze is responsible for directing films such as Being John Malkovich and Where the Wild Things Are as well as countless award-winning music videos for such artists as REM, Bjork and the Chemical Brothers. On the subject of the awards show, Jonze said he is excited to be involved and continued by saying, "I want to find out if we can make a whole night just about making things." He continued by proposing not merely performances but "live collaborations."

Veterans And Newbies Collide As Tina Fey Hosts SNL And Welcomes New Cast Members

Tina Fey Arcade Fire Aaron Paul

Last night saw the season premiere of SNL and with Tina Fey hosting, Arcade Fire as the musical guest, six new castmembers and even a cameo from Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul, it couldn’t have been any better. Fey used her opening monologue to “initiate” the six new actors, in a bit, which left them stripped down to some golden lame underwear, much like what a college frat initiation, we’d imagine. Besides hosting, SNL veteran Fey also featured in several sketches, including spot-on send up of HBO's "Girls" where she played a new addition to the cast, an Albanian immigrant named Blerta, an obligatory bit of air travel humor with a sketch about boarding airplanes and a dark and sarcastic used-car commercial from the 1920s.

Tina Fey, Primetime Emmy Awards
Fresh off her delightful Emmy appearance, Fey returned to her old home at SNL.

Of course, Arcade Fire weren’t left out of the fun either. A brilliant bit, in which Fey attempted to tell the difference between AF and the new castmembers killed two birds with one stone – continuing the roast of the newbies and also making good use of the musical guests’ hidden acting talents. Of course, they also did that music thing they were there to do and performed three whole songs off their upcoming album Reflektor, due to be released next month.

Arcade Fire Release New Single, Video And Artwork For New Album 'Reflektors'

Arcade Fire David Bowie LCD Soundsystem Tina Fey

Arcade Fire are back with a whole heap of new material and album details to share with the ever-loving fans, with the band beginning to slowly leak more and more information about Reflektor over the course of 9 September. First we got the single and video for 'Reflektor,' then the news that Reflektor will be the name of the next album, and most recently we learned that it would be a double album, whilst also being treated to the artwork for the album. Monday was a good day.

Win Butler
Frontman Win Butler will return with his bandmates next month

The Anton Corbijn-directed video for the first track from the album, which features someone with an uncannily similar voice to David Bowie appearing mid-way through, began the torrent of AF album news that flooded newsfeeds across the web yesterday, and soon more and more information about the album was being revealed over the course of the day. The band's online store was updated to feature an album image baring Renaissance sculptor Auguste Rodin's marble imagining of Orpheus and Eurydice, which we asume is the official artwork for the album. The online store where the artwork was found also seemed to reveal that the upcoming fourth release from the Canadian band will be a double album too.

Will Miley Cyrus Bring Twerking To SNL? Singer Announced As Guest Host For New Season

Miley Cyrus will have a chance to redeem herself in the eyes of her peers, to an extent at least, when she takes on hosting duties on the second week of Saturday Night Live's next season. The hit sketch show will return for it's 39th season on 28 September, with Cyrus standing in as host the following week.

Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus will host the second week of the new season

Tina Fey will return to the show where she made her name as the host of the first week of the new season, with Arcade Fire serving as her musical guest. The week after that will be The Miley Cyrus Show, with the oft-talked about star serving as both host and musical guest in what will no doubt be a sure fire way to boost the ratings, for better or worse. Her 5 October performance can work one of two ways for Miley, either she talks her recent behaviour in good jest and routinely lampoons herself and her newly acquired stage antics, or she gets all uppity and people stop pitying her and start actually hating her. Hopefully, it'll be the first option.

Arcade Fire Plan New Music For September Release

Arcade Fire

It has emerged that Arcade Fire are planning to release the follow-up to 2010's The Suburbs this September, with a source close to the band confirming the update to the news blog of Revolt TV. The blog said that it only learnt the date of the release and no other details, with the album set to go on sale on September 9.

The band have been working on the album pretty solidly since coming off of their extensive tour on the back of the release of their third album. Although no tracks from the still-untitled album have emerged online yet, we do know that the Canadian rockers have been working with DFA founder and former LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy to produce the September-release.

Earlier this year, Murphy said that he hasn't had too much of an influence on the seven member group - led by Win Butler and Régine Chassagne - as they are all seasoned studio experts. He also expressed his excitement over the album and told the Daily Star in June, "The album is going great. I am too in the middle of it to know which way it will go in the end. But it's going to be a fantastic record."

David Bowie's Where Are We Now: Is The Old Master Bowing Out?

David Bowie Arcade Fire David Gilmour Pink Floyd

David Bowie, Soho, New YorkA Rare Shot Of David Bowie Wandering Alone In New York

That clattering sound you thought you heard this week? Yeah, that was a thousand music journalists collectively dropping their pens when David Bowie suddenly released a new single - Where Are We Now? - on his 66th birthday. The British icon, now settled in Manhattan, also announced his first album in 10 years - The Next Day - set for release on March. Bowie, a forward thinking songwriter, addresses mortality and the past on his latest single, fuelling speculation as to whether the singer's latest record could well be his last.

There were murmuring of Bowie's return to the fray in 2012, though most expected him to appear at the London Olympics opening ceremony, sing Heroes and hop back on a plane to the East Coast of America. It never happened, and fans of the superstar were left sighing as Danny Boyle instead screened filmed footage of Bowie during his whistle-stop tour of Britain's pop history. Reviews of Where Are We Now? have been wholly positive, with our own Simon Jay Catling musing "this is a track that maintains the hallmarks of its creator's canon - lyrical signposts, themes that are never fully decoded, questions that open up more questions." Luke Turner of The Quietus said, "The song itself, well, it's proper Bowie, but with a really gorgeous swell, and at times heart-rending reflective tone to it. Brilliant stuff. My word." The Daily Telegraph - who also offered a positive review - quoted a spokesman as saying the track came "from out of nowhere," adding, "Throwing shadows and avoiding the industry treadmill is very David Bowie despite his extraordinary track record that includes album sales in excess of 130 million not to mention his massive contributions in the area of art, fashion, style, sexual exploration and social commentary."

Arcade Fire, The Suburbs Album Review

Three years is a long time in music; just ask the likes of Mika, Klaxons or Kanye West, all of whom could do no wrong back in 2007 yet each of which has since fallen by the wayside either critically, commercially or both. While it may be a harsh indictment to place at the feet of messrs Reynolds, Taylor-Brown and co., the point remains that the musical landscape has switched dramatically in what in reality is such a short space of time, deeming so many lauded artists of the day irrelevant in the process. That Montreal's Arcade Fire haven't entered the quagmire of dismissal speaks volumes for their concise, but ultimately consistent output. 2004's 'Funeral' has stood the test of time ever since, quite rightly exemplified by its subsequent status as one of the most astonishing debuts of the past (or indeed one before it) decade, while follow-up 'Neon Bible', despite containing the odd flaw here and there, still wiped the floor with 99% of its contemporaries upon release.
