However, it is the Schwarzenegger film ‘Maggie’ that is the most high profile of the selections. Henry Hobson’s film tells the story of a father whose daughter (Abigail Breslin) becomes one of the infected as part of a zombie epidemic. It co-stars Joely Richardson.

Also premiering is Tim Blake Nelson’s Anethesia, which tells the story of a New York mugging with help from a starry cast including Glenn Close and Kristen Stewart. Elsewhere, Neil LaBute shows his comedy Dirty Weekend with Matthew Broderick and Alice Eve, and The Departed screenwriter William Monahan premiered Mojave, starring Oscar Isaac and Garrett Hedlund.

The Mary J Blige documentary tracks the recording of the singer’s 13th album and fans will be treated to a special performance at New York’s Beacon Theater following the film.

Also introduced this year is the “Midnight” category which offers night owls the chance to see some scary and spooky movies at 11.30pm or midnight screenings. Fans of this kind of film like to stay out late, and there is a vibe that emerges,” said Cara Cusumano, the festival’s senior programmer.

The 2015 Tribeca Film Festival runs April 15-26 at venues across downtown Manhattan.
