Ashanti has been ''betrayed'' in her romantic life.
The 34-year-old singer was quizzed about the end of her almost 10-year relationship with rapper Nelly, who she split from in December 2012, during an appearance on 'The Meredith Vieira Show'.
Although Ashanti she didn't refer to Nelly by name she admitted she had lost trust in a previous relationship.
Vieira, 61, asked: ''You aren't together any more and you said it basically came down to trust. Why do you think it's hard to trust somebody?''
To which Ashanti replied: ''I think sometimes when people have their own insecurities it allows them to act out of character. I've been betrayed.
''You just have to grow. You have to grow up and accept responsibilities for the things that you do. I'm not a big fan of people being cowards. I think it's really important to know yourself and understand what you want and get it. I'm in a different place right now.''
Neither Ashanti or Nelly have ever publicly spoken about the reason why their relationship ended.
'Foolish' singer Ashanti also opened up on the daytime talk show about a stalker who has been hassling her for over a decade.
Ashanti has been bothered by the same man since 2003, and admits his behaviour has been ''not fun'' and she has had to go to court on several occasions to try and put an end to his actions.
