Sylvester Stallone Samuel L Jackson Ava DuVernay

Two days after he noticeably forgot to thank the director and lead actor of Creed when he won Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes, Sylvester Stallone has taken to social media to put right his omission and thank Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan.

On Sunday night, when he scooped his first ever Golden Globe, the 69 year old actor thanked a handful of people, including his agent, his wife and kids and his “best friend” Rocky Balboa (who he said he still has “conversations” with every night). However, he left out director Coogler, and the lead actor Michael B. Jordan, whose character Stallone trains in the boxing movie.

Today, in honour of Martin Luther King Day, MTV is returning to its progressive, socially conscious days with a special twist on its programming. For twelve straight hours, the channel will air all its shows and music videos (all two of them) in black and white, in an effort to draw attention to racial tensions in the US.

Commercials will still air in colour though, presumably because capitalism trumps social justice.

Oscars 2015 Line-Up: Notice Anything Missing?

David Oyelowo Ava DuVernay Bradley Cooper Steve Carell Clint Eastwood

The Oscars and white nominees go together like cheese and white bread – but in both cases, that doesn’t mean they’re good for you. With the kickoff of awards season 2015 came the inevitable backlash for the lack of diversity on the nominees list, but what are the bloggers saying this time around?

No Selma at this year's Oscars.

This year, it looks like the academy jury didn’t even try to seem unbiased – despite films like Selma and Gone Girl becoming massive critical and commercial successes in 2014, both Gillian Flynn and Ana Duvernay got left out of the race for Best Screenplay and Best Director, respectively. David Oyelowo also got snubbed, leaving us with a total of 0 people of colour in the acting categories. Now, it’s not that Bradley Cooper didn’t deserve his third nomination in three years (Best Actor, American Sniper) or that Steve Carrell’s transition into drama wasn’t nod-worthy (Best Actor, Foxcatcher) or that Richard Linklater didn’t create a masterpiece with Boyhood (Best Director).

Oscar Nominations Court Controversy

The reaction to this week's Oscar nominations was a loud one, because Academy voters played it so safe in a year when films expanded to explore a diverse array of themes. Throughout 2014, actors and filmmakers bravely took on big challenges, and many were recognised with nominations. But critics have been quick to point out that all of the acting and directing nominees are white, and #OscarsSoWhite was the trending hashtag on Twitter.

The most obvious snub was for Selma, which only received nods for Best Picture and Best Song (for Common and John Legend's 'Glory'), leaving out the acclaimed actor David Oyelowo and director Ava DuVernay, who would have been the first African-American woman ever nominated for Best Director.

Err, So Why Did 'Selma' Director Ava DuVernay Get Snubbed By DGA?

Clint Eastwood Ava DuVernay

The Directors Guild of America has announced its nominees for the 67th annual DGA Award for direction of a feature film, with Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Clint Eastwood (American Sniper), Alejandro G. Inarritu, Richard Linklater (Boyhood) and Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game) all on the ballot.

Ava DuvernayAva DuVernay was snubbed by the DGA - but for what reason?

Eastwood and Tyldum's names are clearly the main surprises and their inclusion meant there was no room for Ava DuVernay - who did such a remarkable job of Selma - and Bennett Miller for Foxcatcher. David Fincher, Christopher Nolan, Angelina Jolie, Paul Thomas Anderson, James Marsh and J.C. Chandor were also high profile absentees.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s story of his 1965 march through Alabama is told in all its harrowing detail in Ava DuVernay's forthcoming biopic 'Selma', a movie in which Oprah Winfrey spent no time at all getting involved.

Oprah has always held the issue of civil rights among African-Americans close to her heart, having appeared in a number of movies depicting the plight of racism in the US such as, most notably, 'The Color Purple' and, recently, 'The Butler'. But 'Selma' sees the new dawn for civil rights captured in a new film, with Martin Luther King's iconic march for black people's right to vote adapted by director Ava DuVernay and screenwriter Paul Webb. Her interest led to her not only coming on board as a producer, but also landing the role of legendary protester Annie Lee Cooper, who famously struck a Sheriff in the face after being refused the chance to register to vote.

David Oyelowo became involved with Martin Luther King biopic 'Selma' seven years ago; a project which saw many pitfalls along the way - from financing to director selection - but is now here to tell an extraordinary story of one of the world's biggest heroes.

David Oyelowo thinks the movie wouldn't have been made without Oprah

It was 2008 when screenwriter Paul Webb first announce the project, which would also bring on board Brad Pitt as a producer, but according to Oyelowo it took seven years in total to complete - a situation that wasn't as much of a drawback as it sounds in hindsight. 'I think it kind of happened at exactly the right time because the preparation for it was layered', he explains. 'There was a physical element to it, emotional, research element interviewing people but then there was a spiritual element to it as well. This man was led by his spiritual conviction and I felt I had to open up to that in order to be able to do it.'

Selma Trailer

“What happens when a man stands up and says ‘enough is enough’?” So goes the question raised by Martin Luther King, Jr. (David Oyelowo) when President Lyndon B. Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) declines to help him in battling the race-related violence in Alabama. In retaliation, King organises a peaceful protest; he has African Americans march into Selma, Alabama, in an attempt to gain rights to vote. What follows, is a truly horrifying attack from the police on the peaceful protest which was televised and seen by millions, forcing the President’s hand, as he is forced to watch innocent people suffer.
