Biography

Axl Rose (born William Bruce Rose Jr., 6.2.1962)
Axl Rose is best known as the singer of the heavy rock band Guns N' Roses

Childhood: Axl Rose was raised in Indiana - the son of Sharon and William Rose - in a turbulent family environment. The singer has publicly stated that he was sexually abused by William and physically abused by his mother's new husband, Stephen Bailey, who Axl believed to be his biological father whilst he was growing up.

Although he expressed his love of music by singing in church and learning to play piano, he frequently encountered run-ins with the police.

Axl left home at a young age and moved to Los Angeles. He sang for a number of local rock bands, eventually forming Guns N' Roses with Tracii Guns, with whom he had been in the band L.A. Guns. In L.A. he was reunited with Izzy Stradlin. In 1986, he legally changed his name to W. Axl Rose and had the name tattooed on his arm.

The early years of Guns N' Roses: Guns N' Roses was formed in March 1985. The band was a merge of two bands: L.A. Guns and Hollywood Rose. The band members at this point were Axl, Tracii Guns, Ole Beich and Duff McKagan.

The band's debut gig was at the Troubadour club in Hollywood. They built a fan base by playing regularly on the L.A. club circuit and eventually caught the eye of a number of record companies.

After a number of line-up changes, the band settled with Rose on vocals, Slash on lead guitar, Izzy Stradlin on rhythm guitar, Duff McKagan on bass and Steven Adler on drums. They signed to Geffen Records in 1986 and in December of that year, self-released a four-track EP, entitled 'Live?!*@Like A Suicide.'

Guns N' Roses' Commercial Breakthrough: Appetite For Destruction, the band's major label debut album, was released in 1987. Although it sold only 500,000 copies in its first year of release, the band's relentless tour schedule, along with the commercial success of the single 'Sweet Child O' Mine,' propelled the album to the top position of the Billboard 200 album chart the next year. The album has since been certified 15 times platinum and has sold over 27 million copies.

Whilst recording the follow-up to Appetite For Destruction, the band fired Steven Adler, who was struggling with a drug and alcohol addiction. He was replaced by Matt Sorum, former drummer with The Cult.

As the band had enough material for two full-length albums, they released Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II at the same time in 1991. The albums debuted at the first and second spots on the Billboard 200 chart. Guns N' Roses are currently the only band in history to have achieved this.

Cracks started to appear in the band, though, as Axl Rose began to make increasing demands on the band. He received sole ownership of the band's name and Stradlin left the group in 1991. He was replaced by Gilby Clarke, who in turn was replaced by Paul Tobias, a childhood friend of Rose's.

Tensions increased when Slash's guitar parts on their cover of 'Sympathy For The Devil' by the Rolling Stones, were replaced with Tobias' parts. Soon, Slash, McKagan and Sorum all left the band, leaving Rose and keyboardist Dizzy Reed as the only members remaining from the debut album era.

Although the name is owned solely by Axl Rose, he co-owns the rights to the band's back catalogue with Slash and McKagan. The three band members tried, unsuccessfully, to prevent Universal and Geffen from releasing a Greatest Hits album.

Rose withdrew from public view as the band collapsed but he is now known to be spending time working on a new Guns N' Roses album, Chinese Democracy.

The band performed their first live shows for three years in 2006, with a new line-up. Rose has been publicly promising the release of Chinese Democracy since 2006, but a release date has yet to be confirmed.

Acting work: Axl played the voice of Tommy "The Nightmare" Smith in the computer game, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. He has also appeared as an un-credited background performer in the 1988 Clint Eastwood film, The Dead Pool.

Axl Rose Teams Up With Bugs Bunny For New Track

Axl Rose

Guns N’ Roses singer Axl Rose surprised his fans by debuting his first new music in over a decade in a truly unique way – on a Looney Tunes cartoon.

The track, called ‘Rock The Rock’ and which was co-written on Rob Janas and Joshua Funk of the Looney Tunes stable, lasts just over two minutes and was first heard on New Looney Tunes episode “Armageddon Outta Here, Part Two.” It features a cartoon Axl in his trademark Guns N’ Roses - studded leather jacket, red bandana under wide-brim hat, cowboy boots, flannel around the waist – fronting an animated band led by Bugs Bunny and Porky Pig.

Together, the power of their performance diverts an asteroid from a collision course with Earth. Rock the rock, geddit?

Is Axl Rose Really The World's Best Singer?

Axl Rose Guns N Roses Mariah Carey Prince Steven Tyler Kanye West

Axl Rose is infamous for many reasons. His constant late appearances, sometimes taking to the stage almost two hours after their billed start, means every recent Guns n’ Roses tour is dogged by disgruntled fans and a swathe of bad press. The singer is notorious for his cantankerous temperament which has resulted in numerous cancelled appearances and YouTube-worthy angry rants that would give even Kanye West’s irritable soliloquys a run for their money. He is so surrounded by criticism that it is no surprise the frontman’s vocal attributes are often overlooked.

Now, the singer has been named as the best vocalist of all time on a recently published chart, an accolade that is extremely misleading given the nature of the basis for which the award has been meted out to the rock legend. The award is based on versatility in vocal range rather than any consideration for tone, grain or strength which are commonly considered as the most endearing vocal traits.

"Where's The Love Axl?" Slash's Wife Disappointed By Axl Rose's Jimmy Kimmel Interview

Axl Rose Slash Jimmy Kimmel Guns N Roses

In distinct contrast to his normal behaviour Axl Rose was a) on time and b) giving an interview, with Jimmy Kimmel. The GUNS N' ROSES front man hasn't given a live TV interview for 20 years, but now that he has a 12 date residency at The Joint at Hard Rock in Las Vegas is more than happy to do a little promo in aid of the performances.

Perla Hudson, the wife of ex-Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash, was disappointed by the interview and quipped about it in an interview with Us Weekly. She, like many other fans, was probably hoping for a more in-depth and revealing interview, rather than the brief and amusing chat with Kimmel that ultimately barely scratched the surface of Axl's interesting life and even more interesting psyche. "I was waiting for something enlightening and all I got was promotion for a show and his evident affinity for a chili burger," Hudson said.  "Where is the love Axl? And I stayed up for this? Sex, drugs and chili dogs. Long live Axl Rose. And a Halloween tree." Fixating on his weight, she said he has "evidently [had] way too many Tommy's chili burgers!" We can't disagree, he really is looking like a bit of a porker these days, in contrast to his high cheek boned and chiselled days of the early 90s.

Ah well, Axl turned 50 years old earlier this year, so gaining a few pounds is pretty much par for the course in middle age. In the interview he also expressed apathetic support for Obama, but that despite 'leaning' towards the Democrats, he won't be voting. A little odd given that his residency is titled "An Appetite For Democracy". Apathy, political contradictions and piling on the pounds, let's put it all down to creative licence. He's Axl Rose, he can do what he likes. The Guns N' Roses residency will begin on Wednesday 31st October 2012, with 11 futher days until November 24th of the same year.

First TV Interview In 20 Years Sees Axl Rose Back President Obama

Axl Rose Jimmy Kimmel Guns N Roses

The normally grumpy Axl Rose seemed pretty cheerful indeed as he appeared on the Jimmy Kimmel Live! show, and as well he might! After all, this was the first televised interview the notorious front man of ageing rock and rollers Guns N’ Roses had given in more than 20 years. Rose was surprisingly smooth in the role as guest, and even kept his cheerful demeanour when Kimmel likened him to Santa Claus. That must be some sized dressing they’d put up for him backstage.

That said, Kimmel largely avoided the long, long list of things he could’ve asked Rose, such as, y’know, his embittered relationship with his former guitarist Slash, or his decision to reject his Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction and then subsequently apologise for his no show, nor indeed what Guns N’ Roses were planning next. Kimmel might as well have just asked him “So, Axl, how are you?” and have that be that.

However, he did take the ribbing he got well, and in a moment that really did make him seem like Santa Claus, he puts Guns N’ Roses tickets under certain audience members seats, as well bringing along a burger truck and giving everyone gift certificates! Oh, and the title of this story? It’s because he told Kimmel that he “would lean Obama” in the upcoming election, though he quantified this by saying that he and most of California tend not to vote. So there you go then, Axl Rose: not quite as monstrous as we thought. See for yourself below (complete with amusing Halloween anecdote):
