Azealia Banks Goes To Police After Russell Crowe Hotel Spat

Azealia Banks Russell Crowe

Azealia Banks has filed a police report against Russell Crowe after their spat in Los Angeles over the weekend, which saw the 'Noah' star throw the 'Big Big Beat' singer out of his hotel room in Beverly Hills as tempers flared. She was the plus one of RZA, who was invited to Russell's party after he cast the latter in 'The Man with the Iron Fists' 4 years ago.

The discord between Azealia and Russell has extended beyond social media, because now the rapper has gone to the Beverly Hills Police Department with her allegations when she didn't receive an apology from the actor. While her behaviour at Russell's hotel suite party on Sunday (October 16th 2016) was described as 'erratic' by a great many of the guests, in Azealia's version of events her ejection was rather more unceremonious.

Azealia Banks - Broke With Expensive Taste Album Review

Azealia Banks has been surrounded by hype since first really gaining momentum back in 2011. 'Broke With Expensive Taste' has suffered a couple of setbacks, falling victim to label politics and several delays. It's finally here though, and Azealia demonstrates her fast-paced flow throughout, working with a range of producers including AraabMuzik and Lazy Jay, and the up-tempo, electronic sound and influence is scattered throughout the album. Banks has demonstrated before, on her breakout single '212' which despite its age is included on the album, that she has the ability to construct really well structured bars while keeping a commercial leaning production style, and she's consistent in that fact on 'Broke With Expensive Taste'.

Azealia Banks - Broke With Expensive Taste Album Review

The album starts off strongly enough, with the minimal production of 'Idle Delilah' hooking you in, before Banks' cheeky and sweet vocal introduction sets the tone. Once the carnival horns kick in, the electronic influences are extremely apparent, and the Harlem MC switches from sung sections to frantic spitting, and there is also a couple of instrumental breakdowns. The style outlined on the opener continues for much of the first half of the album, a whole list of tracks have a passable commercial appeal and consistent house-inspired production. Tracks like 'Desperado' show exactly where Azealia Banks really impresses; the up-tempo drums, haunting keys and smokey brass back Banks as she kills the beat with intricately structured lyrics over a garage style instrumental, courtesy of M. J. Cole. This ability on the mic that Azealia possesses was first really shoved in our faces when '212' dropped, and it still sounds fresh on 'Broke With Expensive Taste'; it's just a pity that she doesn't seem to come close to giving us that organic impression again.

The bass heavy production continues with tracks like 'Heavy Metal & Reflective' and 'Bbd', but the result sounds a little uninspired, and the sound gets tedious rather quickly. The AraabMuzik produced 'Ice Princess' is an exception to this, the menacing synth lines and half time drums backing Azealia's convincing vocals - however, there's something not quite fitting about the four to the floor, more commercial hook sound. This confused feeling is something that is apparent on much of the album; the tribal sounding 'Soda'; the pulsating, glistening 'Chasing Time' that wouldn't sound out of place in your least favourite club in town; and the strange Disney doo-wop of 'Nude Beach a Go-Go' really don't do much for the cohesiveness of 'Broke With Expensive Taste'. Azealia sacrifices much of what first attracted her fans; the upbeat, house influenced production coupled with serious rapping and elaborately structured bars with impressive multi-syllabics to boot. Rapping seems to have taken a back seat on 'Broke With Expensive Taste'.

Azealia Banks Calls Out White Female Rappers For "Appropriating Black Culture"

Azealia Banks

Azealia Banks first stormed onto the hip-hop scene in 2012 with her hit ‘212,’ and two years later the 23 year-old rapper has finally released her debut album ‘Broke with Expensive Taste.’ But after this lengthy delay, can she compete in a genre of music that is growing with female stars?

Azealia Banks
Azealia Banks has finally released ‘Broke with Expensive Taste’

No matter how talented her fellow recording artists may be, while Banks was interviewed by Pitchfork, she admitted doesn’t see any white female R&B act or rapper as a threat, just “corny” as they have been “appropriating black culture.”

Chloe Howl, Banks, Jungle: The Future Of Pop In 10 Artists

Chloe Howl Clean Bandit Azealia Banks Glass Animals Sky Ferreira Solange Knowles Kanye West Timbaland

A facet of popular culture that frequently is at the receiving end of derision of ‘indie’ or ‘underground’ circles, pop music is in actual fact often the site of technological and stylistic innovation- channelling the sounds of the underground and disseminating them to the masses.

Timbaland’s fresh production techniques completely altered the pop landscape of the early naughties, whilst recently, professional egotist and sometimes rapper Kanye West’s ‘Yeezus’ injected the stark and abrasive sounds of experimental hip hop into a mainstream context. It’s a continuous and cyclical process of obsolescence and fresh ideas that has sped up as the instantaneous nature of the internet becomes the central tool in the transportation of the cultural to-and-fro.

But who will usher in a new era of pop in 2014? Which artist will emerge brimming with new ideas, or even just provide fresh spins on existing concepts? Here is a list of the ten most likely candidates:

"I Came Off As A Bully" - Angel Haze Apologizes For Twitter Feud With Azealia Banks

Azealia Banks Angel Haze

Up and coming female rapper Angel Haze developed some pretty series Twitter beef with Azealia Banks. However, in a home made YouTube video, Haze has apologised for her behaviour, admitting that she feels she behaved like a bully.

At the time of the argument, reports said that Haze and Banks had disagreements going back a while, but it all came back after Haze retaliated to a general tweet from Banks that she felt was aimed at her. It all spiralled out of control and producer Diplo was brought in on it. Plus, Banks ended up using a homophobic slur - she has since deleted the tweet and apologised for it, but that's the scale the argument got to.

Although Haze doesn't refer directly to Banks, there isn't really anyone else that an argument has erupted with via the social networking site. "I really do apologise for all of the stuff that has happened recently," she said. "I don't like the fact that I was a bully in a certain way and I don't like the way that I came off. I came off as a bully." Before finishing thanking her fans for their support and letting them know she loves them.

A Week In Music – Everything Everything Avoid Second Album Syndrome With 'Arc,' Paul Weller's 'Dragonfly' Is A "Victory Lap," Jools Holland Teams Up With The Stars

Albums of Note... Deftly side-stepping the pitfalls of ‘second album syndrome,’ Everything Everything have stepped things up a notch with second album Arc, which looks set to raise their profile even further. They’ve retained their quirky dance geek sound, but this time around, the songs have a darker, more emotional sound. Where their debut was playful, a newfound intensity can be found on this follow-up“Arc offers more drama and intensity than the playful-ness we heard on Man Alive, Everything Everything's 2010-released debut… each track stands in its own right; nothing is filler and Arc maintains interest throughout; it's a much more mature offering than Everything Everything's previous, particularly with the likes of the gentle, piano-backed 'The Peaks, which sensitively showcases their trademark falsetto vocals in an atmospheric setting.”

Paul Weller’s latest release, the ‘Dragonfly EP’ is described by our reviewer as a “victory lap.” The EP contains a number of unreleased tracks from the Modfather’s trilogy of experimental albums released in 2012. Described as “by no means essential for the casual fan,” the tracks contained herein are a step away from the sonic experimentation of the albums and are closer to his early solo days.“The Dragonfly EP is therefore well worth your time if you have any interest in Weller's more recent output. However, for the more casual listener, it may seem like it's business as usual for the Modfather. The 5 additional songs certainly deserve to be heard, and it's a welcome move that they haven't just ended up on the cutting room floor.”

Diss-Harmony: Is Angel Haze’s 'Shut The F*ck Up' The End Of Her Feud With Azealia Banks?

Azealia Banks Angel Haze

Most artists nominated in this year’s BBC Sound of 2013 shortlist will have been celebrating politely since their names were announced. Not so for Angel Haze, who instead has been feuding with fellow rapper Azealia Banks on Twitter.

The beef has spilled out into the recording studio, where both artists have recorded tracks dissing the other. Angel Haze’s latest attack, entitled ‘Shut The F*ck Up’ comes with the additional insult of being unmastered, as Haze claims that Banks isn’t worth the studio time to get the track finished properly. That’s a proper musician’s insult, that one.

‘Shut The F*ck Up,’ starts with a pretty vicious attack on Banks’ appearance and, well, continues in pretty much the same manner, “my whole style is really f*cking outta your range… when I see you all I wanna do is step on your jaw.” Now now, ladies, play nice. This is the second track that Angel Haze has recorded, aimed at Azealia. The first was ‘On The Edge,’ which featured the lines “b*tch, I got ammo on you… I been making moves, b*tch, plotting my fate, looking at you whack ho’s like ‘whose spot should I take?’”

Twitter Feud Between Azealia Banks And Angel Haze Draws In Diplo

Azealia Banks Angel Haze Diplo

Twitter has made celebrity feuds much more frequent and much more fun. The latest spat is between Azealia Banks and New York rapper and singer Angel Haze, who has just been included in the nominated list of BBC's Sound of 2013 (regardless of the outcome of this argument, she's definitely one to watch).

Apparently, Banks and Haze have 'beef' going back a while, but it came to a head via Twitter lately, when Haze retaliated to a tweet left by Banks which was indirectly aimed at Haze- or so Haze claims. The retaliation came in the form of a threatening tweet (which has since been deleted). Banks then said:

Azealia Banks Pulls Single Release After Producer Claims Infringement

Azealia Banks

Azealia Banks has sensationally pulled the release of her latest single after becoming embroiled in an explosive Twitter bust-up with a producer, who has alleged that the star used his track without permission. After much-anticipation, Banks was set to release Esta Noche as a single earlier this week (September 24th) only to come under attack from DJ Munchi, real name Rajiv Munch, who is claiming that her label has used a track written by him and turned it into a single without checking first. He then alleged that he was offered $25,000 and a public apology if he allowed the release to go ahead.

Munchi made his feelings known in a series of angry messages on Twitter. He wrote, "No releasing my track, being a spoiled brat, releasing coverwork, release dates before even reaching out is a good look right? Your is (sic) camp reaching out after releasing." He added "You and your people want to make a single. You are not making things better. Tell your camp the deal is off I don't want your f**king $25.000. F**k off. Go be a puppet b**ch to someone else. Everyone who wanna download the track - it is already out. She stole my track on her mixtape Fantasea without permission. B**ch trying to buy me off after trying to blame me on this s**t, f**k outta here."

The fact that they've withdrawn the release suggests that Munchi might be talking the truth; Banks reacted on her own Twitter account though, writing, "K (OK) so Esta Noche won't be being released today because originalmunchi thinks I'm in the illuminati (sic)... I'm being very serious right now. I'm cracking up right now... This is a first."
