Basement Jaxx - Basement Jaxx Vs. Metropole Orkest Album Review

When I first received this collaboration I thought I must have the wrong CD as the first half of the album sounded nothing like what I'd heard from Basement Jaxx before. Not knowing about the Metropole Orkest I soon discovered that this well known Dutch orchestra was famous for work in films, radio and at hand for projects too. It became clear that the opportunity to work with a huge and talented orchestra must have been too tempting for dance pioneer producers Basement Jaxx and then we have a battle on our hands.

The mistake I made at first was fair enough considering the first half of this album is based on classical music; however it's not like the classics, as that 'great' music can be somewhat pretentious and sullen. This take on classical music is far more refreshing and contemporary. The layers are what give the album a certain mystique and class. As the album progresses we get more shades of Basement Jaxx in the mix but it is contained in the area of orchestral heaven and deep projection. The cover of 'Where's Your Head At' is truly sophisticated and I'm sure creating 'Lights Go Down' with the Metrople Orkest must a wonderful experience.

I have to say this album is pretty cool indeed. If you're a Basement Jaxx listener you could be forgiven for not liking it, but for any musical listener, the depth and emotion is genuine, for me anyway. The quality of musicianship is premier and the coming together of two different styles works well to create an interesting take on classical music and softened down version of dance. It's all quite compelling and puts Basement Jaxx into another realm of musical expression. Intriguing and genuine stuff!
