Bastille's Dan Smith doesn't want to have a ''false rock star image''.

The 30-year-old British singer and songwriter - who makes up one quarter of the band alongside Kyle Simmons, Will Farquarson, and Chris Wood - has opened up about his battle with mental health and he wants to be ''honest'' about his anxiety because he doesn't want to give the perception he is someone who is not.

Speaking in an interview with Channel 4, which has also been reported in NME magazine, he said: ''[Mental health] definitely become normalised, but needs to be more so.

''I've always been really honest about the fact that I get anxious and super-nervous about playing shows, and that comes from being honest about this. I'm not up for cultivating some sort of false rock star image for the sake of it.''

The 'Pompeii' hitmaker has urged other people to discuss their battles because the condition is not uncommon and he believes it should be made to be spoken about as normal as the common cold.

The dark-haired hunk explained: ''It's important people feel able to talk about it. It's something that affects so many people and should be something we can talk about as much as having a cold or any other physical illness.''
