Officials in Manhattan, New York are to vote on whether to approve proposals for a Beastie Boys honour on Tuesday night (14Jan14).

Fans of the rap trio have called on Manhattan Community Board members to rename the corner of Rivington and Ludlow Street in the Lower East Side Beastie Boys Square.

The site featured on the cover of the group's Paul's Boutique album.

Fan LeRoy MCCarthy, who created an online petition and Facebook page to prompt the name change discussion, is cautiously optimistic Beastie Boys Square will soon appear on New York City maps.

He tells the New York Post, "They (officials) are knowledgeable of hip-hop, a lot of them were raised on hip-hop - at their Sweet Sixteen parties and bar mitzvahs... They don't necessarily have the preconceived negative approach to all hip-hop."

If the name change is passed, it won't be the first New York honour for the Beastie Boys - last May (13), a park in Brooklyn was renamed Adam Yauch Park after the late rapper.
