Last week Ben Affleck announced he was stepping down as director of the upcoming Batman solo movie.

Now, according to reports, the project might have found itself a new helmer, Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves.

According to Forbes, Reeves is the frontrunner to take over the project, which is currently going through an overhaul. The Hollywood Reporter adds that other names in the running are Ridley Scott and Fede Alvarez.

Reeves first came to attention after co-creating TV series ‘Felicity’ with J.J. Abrams. He then went on to direct Cloverfield, before taking over Rise of the Planet of the Apes sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and the upcoming third film, War for the Planet of the Apes.

Forbes also reports that the original Batman script, which was penned by Affleck and Geoff Johns has been rewritten by Chris Terrio, but the project will also be undergoing substantial changes including possibly another full rewrite.

Affleck had been touted as directing, as well as starring in, the Batman solo movie since last year. But last week he stepped down as director, saying he would not be able to juggle the dual responsibilities of directing and starring in the movie.

In a statement to Variety Affleck said: “There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions. Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require.

“Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director,” he continued. “I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”
