Ben Affleck Takes Batman Rejection In His "Big Boy" Stride

Ben Affleck has finally responded to the backlash and online petition against him being the next Batman in the 2015 Zack Snyder face-off with Henry Cavill's Superman. As the petition's signatures crept past 90,000, the actor could not pretend he was unaware of the furore any longer. It was time for the Oscar-winning director to address the online tirades and bad feeling towards him.

Appearing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Monday night (16th Sept), Affleck was given a platform to air his views on the tidal wave of hatred he was hit with. He revealed how he was given stern advice by Warner Bros., who told him: "don't use the internet for a few days."

John Roden, who launched the campaign upon last month's news that Affleck had been appointed at the successor to Christian Bale, disparaged Affleck's acting skill and claimed he is "not indimidating enough" to play Batman and wouldn't "do the role justice." Affleck's portrayal of Daredevil was criticised as "atrocious" and he lacks the ability to play a superhero. "Find someone else and deliver to the fans what they want," Roden wrote damningly.

One "Jamie Austin" commenting on the Change.org petition wrote "Now's not the time to soften Batman's image. The franchise needs stability and movies need to get back to cannon. Affleck just isn't the man for the job. Bale can bring it."

To bolster Ben's confidence before the big announcement was made, the studio showed him comments from previous actors who's received nasty backlashes and then had gone on to storm the role. Anne Hathaway, Heath Ledger and Michael Keaton all received fan apprehension before they whacked every grumbler out of the park.

As an act of caution, Affleck was advised to unplug from cyberspace during the time of the casting announcement so his confidence wouldn't be dented. However, no one had prepared for the extraordinary and unprecedented storm of criticism both he and the studios would face.

At the time, Affleck was still puffed with the bravado of his Argo success and admits he though "I can handle any snub. I can handle anything." After the casting announcement hit - a bombshell for many - Affleck made the rather risky decision to scroll down a news page to its comments section. "I looked at the first comment and it says 'NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!' And I was done! We're going to be Luddites for a while," he said.

However, Affleck has not been completely deflated by the approaching 100K punch of rejection. "I'm a big boy," he laughed, "I handle shit. I'm very tough." The 41 year-old admitted he first had reservations towards taking the role but Snyder's vision for the movie - the first time Batman and Superman have clashed in 75 years - persuaded him otherwise.
