Benedict Cumberbatch and wife Sophie Hunter have reportedly named their first child, Christopher Carlton Cumberbatch. The couple welcomed the baby boy on June 1st and had so far kept quiet on the name they had chosen.

The Mail on Sunday reports that the baby’s name has been confirmed as Christopher Carlton, with Carlton being chosen because it is a family name which both Benedict and his actor father Timothy share.

Christopher is said to come from a character Benedict played in the BBC TV adaptation of Sir Tom Stoppard’s play Parade's End. Cumberbatch fans had been speculating on what the baby’s name could be since the couple announced his birth on June 1st.

In a statement at the time a spokesman for the pair said, ”Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter are delighted to announce the arrival of their beautiful son. We would kindly ask everyone to respect the family's privacy during these next few precious weeks.”

The couple married on Valentine’s Day earlier this year, three months after announcing their engagement in the "Forthcoming Marriages" section of The Times newspaper. Their wedding was held at a 12th century church in the Isle of Wright, with the reception taking place in the nearby Mottistone Manor. The actor is currently starring in Hamlet at London's Barbican Theatre, which officially opened earlier in the week.
