Broadway's 'American Psycho' Was A Thrill For Some, But Went Downhill For Others

Benjamin Walker

The theatrical incarnation of Bret Easton Ellis' 1991 novel 'American Psycho' has finally arrived on Broadway after a critically acclaimed stint in London. And while critics in the West End loved it, New York reviewers have mixed feelings about this supposed horror musical.

Benjamin WalkerBenjamin Walker stars in 'American Psycho'

Starring Benjamin Walker as the sadistic titular character Patrick Bateman, the musical has been directed by Rupert Goold and opened at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre On Broadway yesterday (April 21st 2016). But, in many theatre-goers minds, it just hasn't lived up to the expectation set by such predecessors as Stephen Sondheim's 'Sweeney Todd'.

If They Had 'The Choice', Critics Wouldn't See This Film Again

Well, it looks like this is one film you are not going to want to waste your time on this weekend. The general consensus of Ross Katz's adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' novel 'The Choice' is that it's no different to any other Sparks novel/film, and certainly doesn't match up to 'The Notebook'.

The ChoiceThe Choice has had some bad reviews

Starring Benjamin Walker from 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' and Teresa Palmer from 'Warm Bodies', this tale of two young lovers named Travis and Gabby whose relationship takes a devastating turn when the latter falls into a coma after an accident, has failed to impress critics with its tear-jerking concept and instead has been labelled as blatantly formulaic.

In The Heart Of The Sea Review

Excellent

With a huge budget and a relatively small story, this is an intriguingly offbeat blockbuster that might struggle to find an audience. Basically, it's aimed at fans of more thoughtful, personal stories of tenacity and survival, but it's shot with a massive special effects budget that sometimes seems to swamp the drama. Still, it's involving and moving. And it's also fascinatingly based on the true events that inspired Moby Dick.

The story is framed in 1850 as novelist Herman Melville (Ben Whishaw) visits an ageing sailor named Tom (Brendan Gleeson) to quiz him about a momentous event in his past that he has never spoken of. Flash back to 1820 Nantucket, and Tom (Tom Holland) is a rookie crew member on the whaling ship Essex, working under the posh, privileged Captain George (Benjamin Walker) and his able but low-class first mate Owen (Chris Hemsworth). As these these two leaders clash against each other, the ship sails off for what will be a very long journey. Eventually they head into the Pacific in search of a mythical pod of whales. But when they find it, they run afoul of a gigantic white whale that takes their arrival personally, sinking their ship and pursuing the survivors in their lifeboats.

All of this is staged as an epic battle between humanity and nature, with layers of interest in the way these men strain to survive against unimaginable odds. It's a riveting story, beautifully shot and rendered with immersive effects. And the cast members create complex characters who are profoundly changed by their experience. Not only is there mammoth action, but there's plenty of barbed interaction and even some strongly emotional moments that bring the themes home to a modern audience. Sometimes this aspect feels a bit corny, as clearly whalers at the time wouldn't feel remorse about killing one of these majestic creatures. But we would.

In The Heart of The Sea - Teaser Trailer

In August of 1819, The Essex set sail from New England. The whaling ship set out beyond the edges of the map to hunt in unknown waters. What the 21-man crew discovered, was far from what they could ever have imagined. A sperm whale - absolutely gigantic and hell-bent on destroying their comparatively tiny ship. While battling the demon of a sea beast, the ship was destroyed, and many of the crew were killed. As the few survivors struggled to find land and make their way back to South America, they faced a harrowing adventure, and fought insanity, storms, starvation and despair. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter Review

Very Good
A riotous combination of rah-rah American patriotism and overwrought special effects nonsense, this cheeky bit of fantasy history is rather good fun. Yes, it's also completely ridiculous, but the visual flair and fast pace keep us happily entertained.

Young Abe Lincoln (Walker) is determined to get revenge against the sinister Barts (Czokas), who had something to do with his mother's death. But it turns out that Barts is immortal, so Abe's new friend Henry (Cooper) trains him in how to fight vampires. Meanwhile, Abe pursues a career in politics, marries Mary (Winstead) and discovers that the alpha vampire (Sewell) is using the Civil War as a cover for bloodsuckers to take over America. Along with his intrepid friends (Mackie and Simpson), Abe sets out to turn the tide at Gettysburg.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter Trailer

As a boy, Abraham Lincoln learns from his father, Thomas, that vampires are real.
