Everyone was talking about Jay-Z and Solange's elevator fight at the Standard Hotel after the Met Gala in May. And that was exactly what they were aiming for, claims Solange and Beyoncé's dad Matthew Knowles.

Back in May, shortly after the New York Met Gala, footage was leaked which appeared to show Solange attacking her brother-in-law Jay-Z in a hotel elevator. The incident sparked rumours of Jay-Z's infidelity and an imminent divorce from Solange's sister Beyoncé.

Speaking to a Houston radio station, as TIME reports, Matthew claimed the whole affair was a publicity stunt intended to promote the couple's joint On The Run tour. Matthew said Beyoncé and Jay-Z wanted to find a way to "ignite that tour." He further explained "It's called a 'Jedi mind trick.' The Jedi mind trick fools you a lot of the time."

Matthew believes the trio's motivation was to draw attention to Beyonce and Jay-Z's upcoming tour and Solange's album. Apparently it worked as both ticket and album sales increased following the incident.

If Matthew is correct, it was certainly an elaborate plan and the trio gave us just enough to keep us guessing about the circumstances surrounding the fight. The three initially released a statement in which they called the incident a "private matter" and seemingly put on a united front by posting family pictures on social media.

However, the intrigue continued and even now, months later, many continue to question the nature of Beyoncé and Jay-Z's marriage and the family's general state. The couple have made a point of emphasising, throughout their tour, how happy their marriage. They have shared a great deal of footage and film of their marriage and home life including footage of their 2008 wedding.

However, Matthew's comments may not be accurate as it appears his relationship with his two daughters is not what it once was. Matthew managed Destiny's Child and later Beyoncé during her solo career but that all changed in 2011. Beyoncé fired her father as her manager at around the same time his affair with actress Alexsandra Wright came to light.
