Beyonce has often skirted around the issue of feminism but in an article with Vogue Magazine, she addressed the concerns that have been voiced with regards to her naming her forthcoming tour ‘The Mrs Carter Tour,’ a reference to her husband Jay Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter. Critics have accused Beyonce of turning her back on the strong feminist anthems that she has released in the past, such as ‘Single Ladies’ and ‘Independent Women.’

In the interview with the high profile fashion magazine (reported by Sky News), she explained that the decision to call the tour the Mrs Carter tour was a tribute to her husband, with whom she had her first child, Blue Ivy Carter, last year. “I feel like Mrs Carter is who I am, but more bold and more fearless than I've ever been. It comes from knowing my purpose and really meeting myself once I saw my child. I was like, 'OK, this is what you were born to do'. The purpose of my body became completely different.”

On the subject of feminism, Beyonce broke her usual muted response to the issue and said “I guess I am a modern-day feminist. I do believe in equality. Why do you have to choose what type of woman you are? Why do you have to label yourself anything? I’m just a woman and I love being a woman… I do believe in equality and that we have a way to go and it’s something that’s pushed aside and something that we have been conditioned to accept.”
