The nominations have been announced for the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, and no one is surprised that Beyonce is a front runner with a staggering eight nominations for various videos from her fifth album, Beyoncé. Close behind with seven nods apiece are Eminem and newcomer Iggy Azalea. Beyonce has been nominated for an impression fifty VMAs in the past and has walked away with twelve, whilst Eminem also holds an impressive eleven "Moonman" trophies.

Iggy Azalea made headlines earlier this year when she shot to the top of the U.S Billboard Charts with 'Fancy', including a video inspired by 90's romcom cult classic Clueless. Soon after she made chart history as the first artist since The Beatles to simultaneously hold the first and second spots on the U.S Chart when Ariana Grande's track 'Problem', on which she features, went to Number 2.

The VMA nominees this year are a diverse bunch, but refreshingly it's the girls that are leading the pack with only one male artist nominated for Video of the Year; Pharrell's 'Happy'. The other four nominees for the top prize are Beyoncé ft. Jay Z with 'Drunk In Love', Iggy Azalea ft. Charli XCX with 'Fancy', Miley Cyrus's 'Wrecking Ball' and perhaps the underdog of the category, 'Chandelier' by Sia, who took to Twitter to express her excitement.

British hopefuls include Ed Sheeran, whose single 'Sing' is vying for Best Male Video, and Sam Smith, nominated for Artist to Watch.

The 2014 Music Video Awards will take place on August 24th in the Forum in Inglewood California, and will be broadcast worldwide on MTV.
