On the same day that the NRA calls for there to be armed guards at all schools, celebrities have come together to film a campaign video for 'Demand a Plan', which asks the government to do just that- come up with a plan to tackle the national epidemic of gun violence. The plan that the NRA offers is definitely not the answer that these celebs are after.

As stars, including Beyonce, Jamie Foxx, Jessica Alba, Reese Witherspoon, Will Ferrell, Zooey Deschanel and John Legend, among many more, speak the names of cities, and the names of places, they also ask their core question: How many more? Fundamentally, there can't be any more, enough is enough. And this is precisely why they are demanding a plan. The video- which you can see below- is linked to the Demand a Plan website, the homepage of which has three main requests:

1. Require a criminal background check for every gun sold in America

2. Ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines

3.Make gun trafficking a federal crime, including real penalties for "straw purchasers"

You can see more of what they're saying, and sign the petition on the website, right here.

For anyone outside of the USA a gun ban seems like the obvious way forwards, but as proud gun wielding Americans throughout the country continually point out it's their right due to what's written in the constitution. Thought Catalog writer Oliver Miller, however, points out that the constitution is up for debate due to a dubious comma, which you can take a look at on the TC website. More pertinent, however, is the largely unknown scale of gun violence in the states that he notes. In the 48 hours following the tragic massacre in Newtown, a time at which you'd think guns would be a little more curtailed and the public would be more aware of their use of them, the following took place:

A man shot a casino employee in Las Vegas, and then shot himself.
Another man opened fire in a restaurant and car park, injuring one man before being shot himself.
Two police officers were killed, having been shot while on a call.
There was a drive by shooting in Louisiana.
A man shot himself and his 25 year old wife in California.
A shooting in Alabama left three dead and several injured, and then 2 suspects were shot dead by police.

Clearly, simply knowing about tragedies elsewhere involving guns does not dissuade the American population to continue using them against one another. A plan is needed, there's no two ways about it. Demanding a plan may not change that, but it's certainly one small step forward.
