SNL In The Ratings Pit, Even After Solid Bill Hader Episode

Bill Hader

There’s something rotten at SNL. And by that I mean, the writing just isn’t the same and the viewers are starting to notice. Despite Bill Hader’s cameos, the latest episode received the lowest ratings in the show’s history. According to Complex, Saturday’s show scored abysmally with the all-important 18-49 demo.

Bill Hader
Even Bill Hader couldn't save this sinking ship.

Because, say it with me folks, young adults don’t watch live television anymore. The previous record holder for lowest views was that one episode Charlize Theron hosted last season that we’re not gonna talk about.

Bill Hader Returns To SNL For A One-Off Show, Brings Kristen Wiig, Everything Is The Greatest

Bill Hader Kristen Wiig Jay Pharoah

Bill Hader returned to SNL last night and it was the. Best. Thing. Seriously, if you’ve ever been a fan of the comedian, this week’s episode was a must-see and if not… well, find a way to watch it anyway. You will be one by the end.

Bill Hader
Where my Hader fans at?

To answer all the questions I know you’re asking yourself – yes, he did bring back Stefon, the worst news correspondent ever. And it was just as good as ever. And of course, the reunion wouldn’t be complete without the antics of Herb Welch.

Living in the Headquarters of her brain, they are forever arguing about how best to deal with Riley's situation, and while Joy is trying to make the best of what has happened, the others aren't so forthcoming.

Seth Meyers Leaves SNL For Greener Pastures With Emotional Weekend Update

Seth Meyers Amy Poehler Bill Hader Melissa McCarthy Imagine Dragons

This week’s Saturday Night Live was hosted by Melissa McCarthy and featured some great sketches with her, but it was really Seth Meyers who stole the show. And rightfully so – it was Meyers’ last episode at the Weekend Update desk. Joined by former SNL co-stars Bill Hader (as Stefon) and Amy Poehler, Meyers was given a proper Weekend Update sendoff.

Seth Meyers, Golden Globes After Party
Seth Meyers said "so long" to SNL and moved on to greener pastures (and a premium time slot.)

Meyers is moving on to the next step of his career – replacing Jimmy Fallon as the host of Late Night – but that doesn’t mean there weren’t some emotional goodbyes. "This is the job I always wanted, and I had the best time," Meyers said in lieu of a witty closing line at the end of his last Weekend Update.

'Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2' Scoffs At US Box Office Competition

Bill Hader Neil Patrick Harris Anna Faris Andy Samberg

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, despite receiving mixed reviews, has gained over $34 million at the US weekend Box Office. The film was released on Friday (27th September), and received mixed, although generally positive reviews. Some critics described the film as "wildly cute" and "colourful" (Miriam Bale, New York Times), but many felt the film lack originality particularly the "the original film's intelligence" (Sean O'Connell, Washington Post).

Neil Patrick Harris provides the voice for Steve, Flint Lockwood's monkey.

However, such comments do not appear to have discouraged many from seeing the second instalment in the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs franchise, quite the contrary as the film beat off its competition by at least $20 million. The other films in the Box Office are more equally spread, figures wise, with Prisoners (down from No.1 last week) and Rush (up from No.38) each gaining $10 million.

Rush Can't Keep Up With Cloudy As Meatballs Predictions Are Vindicated - It's The Box Office Roundup

Bill Hader Ron Howard

Maybe it was the lack of animated competition, the niche subject matter of its closest rival, the fact that September is becoming an excellent time for comedies of its kind or a original film’s fan base to fall back on, or maybe it was all of the above, but somehow, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs was always going to top the box office.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2.

It was, in fact, the last option: all of the above. Disney’s Planes hit cinemas two months ago, Rush, while critically acclaimed, is probably more for film aficionados and racing enthusiasts, September – like Hotel Transylvania showed is – is a prime slot for animated comedies and there are already plenty of Cloudy fans out there.

'Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2' To Dominate Box Office Despite Average Reviews

Bill Hader

There are plenty of ridiculously silly, colourful and imaginative animated classics out there, but perhaps none have the same psychedelic ‘out there’ feel that Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs has. The sequel – the one with a ‘2’ on the end – is coming out tonight (Sept 27) and it looks like the box office might be covered in Italian balls of minced beef.

Cloudy with a Chance of MeatballsThe weird and wonderful world of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

It was this weekend last year that Sony Pictures Animation’s Hotel Transylvania broke the September opening weekend record with a $42.5 million. As we hit the fall season, summer’s gone, and people need their sprits lifted. It’s the perfect time for animated films to come along and inject some colour into an increasingly sullen climate.

After SNL, Where Does Jason Sudeikis Go Next?

Jason Sudeikis Bill Hader Fred Armisen Andy Samberg Seth Meyers Kristen Wiig Jennifer Aniston Emma Roberts Seth Gordon Jason Bateman Charlie Day

Jason Sudeikis, the most high profile member of the Saturday Night Live cast, has announced he will not be returning to the show in the fall. Sudeikis is following comedians Bill Hader, Fred Armisen, Andy Samberg, Seth Meyers and Kristen Wiig out of the long-running show, leaving NBC bosses with a dilemma on their hands as they seek to keep the show relevant, popular and most of all funny for its 39th season.

Sudeikis, who has worked on the show for 10 years, announced the news during a taping of the Late Show with David Letterman,

"Yeah, I'm going to leave. Yeah, I'm not coming back next fall." he told the veteran host, to a bewildered audience. Letterman had apparently not heard of the departure and began asking the actor questions about life working on the show, with the 37-year-old dropping the bombshell shortly after.

SNL Says Goodbye To Armisen, Sudeikis And Hader In A Season Finale To Remember

Jason Sudeikis Bill Hader Fred Armisen Ben Affleck

Last night’s season finale of Saturday Night Live was filled with nostalgia, as Ben Affleck returned to host for the fifth time, while cast members Jason Sudeikis, Fred Armisen and Bill Hader bowed out with their final SNL show.

It was an unusual hosting turn for Affleck, who gave his opening monologue with wife Jennifer Garner by his side and devoted the moment to an apology to her (of sorts). Affleck raised a couple of eyebrows with his Oscar acceptance speech earlier this month, when he mentioned that his marriage to the actress was “work”. In front of the SNL cameras, however, he was all remorse, saying: “I couldn’t do any of the things I do without you” and so on and so forth, until Garner jokingly noted that he was, in fact, just reading from the cue cards. Oh well, it was a noble try anyway.

But the night definitely belonged to Hader, Armisen and Sudeikis, all of whom went out on a high note with their final sketch performing with Armisen's Brit punk character and singing "It's a Lovely Day." Carrie Brownstein, who works with Fred Armisen on the sketch comedy series Portlandia also joined in the festivities, as did the Sex Pistols' Steve Jones, singer Aimee Mann and others. This time the promos weren't deceiving. One thing is for sure: the SNL team definitely knows how to put on a finale.

The Week In News: Angelina Jolie's Double Mastectomy, Bill Hader Leaves Saturday Night Live And Beyonce Pregnant, Again?

Simply Heroic: Angelina Jolie stunned the world this week after revealing she had undergone a double mastectomy in order to reduce her risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer. The Oscar-winning actress lost her mother to cancer and was keen to limit the chances of the same thing happening to her brood.

Darth Hader: After eight years on Saturday Night Live, Bill Hader has announced he is leaving the show when its season ends on Saturday. Saturday Night Live Is Cast Member Short After Bill Hader's Departure

Bill Hader Seth Meyers Jason Sudeikis

Let’s shed a collective tear for Bill Hader leaving SNL. Not for Hader himself of course, as we all know that talented comedians who had their start on the sketch show usually do quite well for themselves. And Emmy-nominated Hader certainly doesn’t seem to be slowing down. No, what will be missed are Hader’s characters, starting with the overly caffeinated “Weekend Update” city correspondent, Stefon. Yes, Hader is probably moving on to bigger and better things, but who will tell us what New York’s hottest club is now?

“It was a hard decision, but it has to happen at some point,” Mr. Hader said in an interview. “It got to a point where I said, ‘Maybe it’s just time to go.’ ”

Hader, 34, has had an impressive run on SNL. After joining as a featured performer in 2005, he was soon promoted to a full-time castmember and went on to create some memorable impersonations of people like James Carville, Al Pacino, Vincent Price and Julian Assange. The actor isn’t the only one leaving SNL of late though. This large-scale departure of talent, including writer/castmember Seth Meyeres (who is leaving to replace Jimmy Fallon on The Late Show) as well as possibly Fred Armisen and Jason Sudeikis, could pose a problem for the show.

Bill Hader In Saturday Night Live Exit

Bill Hader Saturday Night Live

Saturday Night Live is enjoying or enduring – depending on which side you fall – a mass exodus. But it’s not losing a load of staff, rather the extremely versatile Bill Hader.

Hader spearheads the 'Weekend Update' as city correspondent, Stefon. He also acts up as James Carville, Al Pacino, Vincent Price and Julian Assange, and anyone else he’s told to impersonate. He is, by all accounts, a truly adaptable man. “It was a hard decision, but it has to happen at some point,” Mr. Hader said in a recent interview. “It got to a point where I said, ‘Maybe it’s just time to go.’”

Lorne Michaels, executive producer of Saturday Night Live, said: “In terms of intelligence and talent, he was in that same tradition. He was so completely committed to the art of it and enough a student of it that there’s something strikingly original. He didn’t explode onto the air, but gradually he found his voice, and that became a huge thing.”

Empty Chairs Return To Haunt Clint Eastwood At 'Trouble With The Curve' Premiere

Clint Eastwood Bill Hader Robert Lorenz

Clint Eastwood isn't going to be living down his now infamous empty chair speech at the recent Republican convention any time soon. The venerable actor and director spoke at an event to show his support for the Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney and opted to have an imaginary conversation with an (of course absent) President Barack Obama. The images of Eastwood talking to an empty chair have become internet meme sensations, whilst impressions have adorned television screens worldwide, culminating in actor Bill Hader doing his own version on a recent episode of Saturday Night Live.

You'd think he'd be safe at the premiere of his latest film though but apparently not. The 82 year-old appeared at the showing of Trouble With The Curve and walked past the press, only to have it pointed out that there were 16 chairs being carried behind him. Eastwood took the reference pointed out to him in his stride, laughing "Oh my God, yes."

The chairs were only set dressing for the stage, but Eastwood had it made clear that he didn't want to answer any questions about his speech whilst at the premiere. Reflecting on its impact on the film, director Robert Lorenz pondered "I don't know. Some people may come and some people may not because of it. But, in the end, it's not a political movie. Myself, the other cast (members), we all have different political ideas. We all came together and put those aside. So, I hope people treat it as such."
