Is It Time For Billy Bob Thornton To Return To Hollywood's Elite?

Billy Bob Thornton Golden Globe Awards

Curiously, just minutes after winning the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a TV Drama, Billy Bob Thornton suggested he is no longer sought after in Hollywood as director. Thornton turned to television for his most recent role - a stunning performance in FX's adaptation of the Coen's classic comedy-drama Fargo.

As well as a fine actor, the Oscar-winner is also an accomplished director and his debut feature Sling Blade was heralded as a masterpiece of Southern storytelling. His last effort, the 2012 indie drama Jayne Mansfield's Car featured a wonderful cast (Robert Duvall, Kevin Bacon) but failed to chime with critics.

'Entourage' Movie Finally Sees The Light Of Day [Trailer And Pictures]

Cameo appearances can make for some of the greatest moments in movies. Remember seeing Alice Cooper in 'Wayne's World'? Stan Lee in 'Mall Rats'? Mike Tyson in 'The Hangover'? Or, possibly the greatest cameo of all time, Bill Murray in 'Zombieland'? Well, for a show set in and around Hollywood, based on the exploits of rapper/actor/executive producer Mark Wahlberg, it was understandable why HBO's 'Entourage' has more than its fair share of A-list cameos.

'Entourage' is set to hit US theatres on 5th June, 2015.
'Entourage' is set to hit US theatres on 5th June, 2015.

Over the course of its seven-year runtime, 'Entourage' racked up a very impressive list of cameo performances, including Jessica Alba, Scarlett Johansson, Hugh Hefner, Peter Dinklage, James Cameron, Seth Green, Snoop Dogg, Peter Jackson - you get the idea. There were an awful lot of people getting involved in 'Entourage', so it stands to reason that when the trailer for the feature adaptation launched, people were eagerly looking to see who would be making an appearance outside of the main cast.

The Judge Review

Weak

This generational drama strains so hard to be serious that it's almost laughable. Its big themes are only superficially addressed, while the bloated nearly two and a half hour running time could easily have been cut down simply by eliminating all of the emotive close-ups of actors with tears welling in their eyes. In other words, while there are the bare bones of a decent movie in here, it's been badly compromised to turn it into Oscar bait.

At least it starts well, with a sequence centred on Hank (Robert Downey Jr), a slick Chicago lawyer with a precocious daughter (Emma Tremblay) and an angry trophy wife (Sarah Lancaster) who has had enough. Hank's cold-hearted ways are a legacy of his estranged relationship with his father Joseph (Robert Duvall), the no-nonsense judge in a small-town Indiana town. Then Hank is called home when his mother dies, comforting his brothers Glen (Vincent D'Onofrio), whose injured hand ended his baseball career, and Dale (Jeremy Strong), who is mentally challenged. He also rekindles his youthful romance with waitress Sam (Vera Farmiga). Then Joseph is arrested for murder, and Hank steps in to help inexperienced lawyer CP (Dax Shepard) defend him against the shark-like prosecutor (Billy Bob Thornton).

There isn't a single subtle element in this film, as the script is carefully constructed to pull our sympathies back and forth even though both Hank and Joseph are deeply unlikeable grumps. Downey and Duvall are good enough actors to make them watchable, but director David Dobkin (The Change-up) hammers every sentimental scene home with far too much force. And the script is so simplistic that it chickens out before anything interesting happens. Even the court case lacks something compelling to draw the audience in. It certainly doesn't help that the characters are all deeply contrived. Just one example: there's a disability for each of the three brothers: physical, emotional and mental.

Richard Linklater is well known in the film industry as one of the stand out names in indie movie making. Responsible for a wide variety of films including the decade spanning romance 'Before Sunset' (and its sequels), music fuelled comedy 'School Of Rock', social misfit drama 'Slacker', and innovative animated thriller 'A Scanner Darkly', Linklater has inspired a generation of filmmakers and scooped two Oscar nominations and numerous film festival awards along the way. After 21 years, this Texas born innovator is still thoroughly impressing, his latest project 'Boyhood' having caused a stir for its unique quality of having been filmed over thirteen years. "I hadn't had an opportunity to really dig in and do something like this in 20 years," Dobkin told the Canadian Press of his foray into drama. "There are a lot of intense scenes in the movie. You would think that comedies are more fun to work on and they're not always as fun as they come out. This movie was strangely cathartic."

The Judge - Trailer

Hank Palmer is a ruthless but excellent lawyer, despised by many of his peers for his habit of representing often blatantly guilty criminals. One day mid-trial however, he receives a call from home informing him of his mother's recent death. Reluctantly, he ventures back to the town of Carlinville, Indiana where he grew up to convene with his family ahead of the funeral. As he expected, the greeting between himself and his father - the local Judge Joseph Palmer - is particularly frosty. As a young college graduate, Hank was desperate to leave the harsh and unfriendly grasp of his father but when the town's sheriff tells him that Joseph is now a murder suspect, he begins to feel a grudging obligation to cast their differences aside and help him protest his innocence.

New television series Fargo premiered last night on FX, giving American audiences a first taste of the adaptation of the Coen Brothers famed 1996 dark comedy. With plenty of black humour and often shockingly overblown violence, the show has been described by Hawley as more like ''a ten hour movie'', than a traditional series. Set in snowy Minnesota, Fargo is a furtherance of the '90s crime classic and has already been tipped by some as the next Breaking Bad in terms of its must-watch factor. Colin Hanks, Bob Odenkirk, Oliver Platt, Kate Walsh, Keith Carradine, Adam Goldberg, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele all take supporting roles in the show.

The TV series adaptation of the Coen brothers Oscar-winning movie Fargo has received strong reviews ahead of its premiere on FX tonight. The show stars Billy Bob Thornton as Lorne Larvo, who arrives in a Minnesota and immetely brings major changes to the lives of insurance salesman Lester Nygaard (Martin Freeman), Officer Molly Solverson (Alison Tolman), the daughter of the former Chief (Keith Carradine) and singer father Gus Grimly (Colin Hanks).

"A perfectly mixed cocktail equally parts menacing and suspenseful, washed down with surprising notes of hilarious satire and pulpy violence, FX's version of Fargo is most certainly not a pale imitation of the gruesome dark comedy," said the Daily Beast's Kevin Fallon.

'Fargo' TV Series Will Reach Your Eyes, And Ears, Via Channel 4

Channel 4 is the lucky winner of 'Fargo', the new TV series based on The Coen Brothers’ famous film. We say lucky because loads of people are going to watch it, but there’s also scant regard for the way airing rights are actually distributed mixed in there, too. The series premieres in the U.S. on FX in April, and will air shortly after on Channel 4 in the U.K.

Channel 4's chief creative officer Jay Hunt said: "Fargo is a perfect Channel 4 show – a dark comedy, beautifully directed with a stunning cast. We are excited to be bringing it to a British audience."

Parkland Review

OK

This starry drama has documentary realism going for it, although without a single well-developed character it never finds any resonance. By recounting JFK's assassination from a variety of previously unseen angles, we learn some new things about that fateful day in November 1963. Oddly, the script doesn't even focus on the hospital that gives the film its name. That might have helped give the film some focus.

We watch the shooting in Dallas through the eyes of Abraham Zapruder (Giamatti), famously the only person to capture the event on film. He is immediately contacted by a Secret Service agent (Thornton), who helps him process the film and make copies. Meanwhile at Parkland Hospital, two residents (Efron and Hanks) and a tenacious nurse (Harden) are working against the odds to save Kennedy's life. And elsewhere, an FBI agent (Livingston) is following the trail of the shooter, whose brother and mother (Dale and Weaver) have very different reactions to what has just happened.

Writer-director Landesman jumps straight into the events without properly establishing the characters. But it's impossible to feel emotion when we don't know anything about the people we're watching, and we can't feel suspense when we know what's going to happen. So we're left to soak up the details, which are often fascinating (ever wonder how to get a coffin into a plane?). And while the actors are good enough to play the intensity of each scene for all it's worth, the only ones who register with us are Giamatti and Dale, because what their characters go through is more complex than we expect.

Parkland Offers Fresh Perspective On JFK's Shooting - [Trailer + Poster]

Zac Efron Paul Giamatti Billy Bob Thornton Marcia Gay Harden

As we approach the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s fatal shooting, commemorative programming is inevitable. Parkland tells the story of Abraham Zapruder – the amateur photographer who inadvertently caught the day’s tragic events on film – and Zac Efron as Dr. Charles James – the rookie doctor who saw the president of the United States enter his theatre.

Check out the Parkland trailer here

"This is a movie about the ground truth from the ground level," Director Peter Landesman said about the film. "What surprised me was the power and poignancy of those who survived that day and the three that followed -- the heroism, the instincts and the pathos of those swept up in this tsunami. This is an event that happened to individuals."

When Abraham Zapruder, a women's clothing manufacturer from Texas, excitedly set up his camera to record the grand arrival of the much-loved President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jackie Kennedy in Dallas on November 22nd 1963, he had no idea that he would in fact record one of the most shocking and most watched films in history when the President was fatally shot by a nearby gunman. He became one of a string of unlikely individuals to get involved in one of the world's most publicised assassination cases, along with all the doctors and nurses who were forced to overcome the shock when Kennedy was rushed to Parkland Hospital; the family of the alleged killer, US Marine Lee Harvey Oswald; and those FBI agents who could've prevented the incident when they had Oswald in their grasp.

'Parkland' is a new historical drama about one of the most famous assassinations in history which is set for release ahead of the event's 50th anniversary. It has been directed and written by Peter Landesman who is controversially best known for his New York Times article on sex slavery 'The Girls Next Door' which he later turned into a film called 'Trades' and which was publicly accused of being at least partly fictitious. 'Parkland' is set to be released in the UK on November 8th 2013.

The 57-year-old will play one of several new characters due to be introduced in the new series, taking on the part of criminal Lorne Malvo, who was described as "a rootless, manipulative man who meets a small town insurance salesman and sets him on a path of destruction" in the FX statement. Video - Billy Bob Thornton Talks About The Changes In Tattoo Culture And His Valentine's Day Intimacies

'Sling Blade' star Billy Bob Thornton discusses tattoos and Valentine's Day with photographers as he goes to get into his car. They ask him to describe what it was like getting his first tattoo. 'Oh gosh, it was so long ago, it was in 1974', he said. 'Back then people didn't get tattoos, just people in the Navy or bikers. and now you go to the dentist and your dentist has a tattoo.' He is then asked what the male version of a 'tramp stamp' (lower back tattoo) is. 'Let's see, err. stupid!' He replies with a laugh.

Little has caused more contention in the contactmusic office than our recent discussion about the Christmas films list! Obviously, everyone has their own favourite, and to them that will always be the top of the list. One thing that became all too clear to us was that - with the exception of Elf & Bad Santa - there really hasn't been too many full blown Christmas films so we'd like to make a plea to Bill Murray and the other Hollywood greats - PLEASE make a new (top quality) Christmas film to join these festive favourites!

I can't say we particularly advocate parents encouraging their offspring to watch films above their age certificate, but it appears we all grew up in houses that didn't really mind what we watched - and let's face it, some of the best Christmas films might have a few boobs or rowdy drunken behaviour... As children of the 80's and 90's, we're fully aware that there's original to some of these remakes, but as is always the way, these are the films we grew up with and as such, they are our favourites.

Enough explanation, in no particular order here are the films we recommend you watch over the holidays!

The Baytown Outlaws Trailer

Brick, McQueen and Lincoln Oodie are three trigger-happy redneck brothers who work for a corrupt sheriff of their town, taking down criminals in unlawful ways. After accidentally taking out the residents at an address that turns out to be wrong, they are offered $25,000 by Celeste Martin who asks them to retrieve her kidnapped handicapped godson Rob from her violent ex-husband Carlos who believes she is dead. He killed Rob's parents and had Celeste shot when he discovered he had a large sum of money in a trust that matured when he hit 18. The Oodies think of their mission as a simple smash and grab but things become less easy when Carlos sets a gang of gorgeous but deadly women on them, as well as a group of Federal agents and various other psychopaths hell bent on killing the brothers. While previously seeking fun in lawless battles to the death, the Oodie outlaws soon find themselves questioning themselves and their careers as they do everything in their power to protect the boy from harm, and not just for their own gain.

Comedy action just doesn't get any better than 'The Baytown Outlaws' and is a wonderful feature length movie debut from director Barry Battles and his co-writer Griffin Hood. It will hit theaters in January 2013 after being released On-Demand Nationwide on December 4th 2012.

Puss In Boots Review

Very Good
This Shrek spin-off continues the theme of mashing up fairy tales with movie genres, and while there's a slightly stale odour lingering through this prequel, it's also witty enough to keep us laughing.

Puss (Banderas) is a notorious outlaw looking for a way to clear his name and repay an old debt when he hears that redneck thugs Jack and Jill (Thornton and Sedaris) have some magic beans that can be used to find a golden-egg-laying goose. Then he discovers that sexy thief Kitty Softpaws (Hayek) is also after them. And worse yet, she's working with Humpty Dumpty (Galifianakis), Puss' childhood cohort who once betrayed him. When Humpty convinces Puss that he's now a good egg, the trio makes an elaborate plan to get the beans together.
