New York's Cablevision cable system and its MSG Network hailed Wednesday night's 3D coverage of the NHL contest between the New York Rangers and the New York Islanders, which they said was the first 3sports event ever broadcast in 3D on cable. MSG Media President Mike Bair was quoted in Broadcasting & Cable as calling it "the future of sports television." While the 3D TV sets that are required to view the telecast are scarce -- they went on sale earlier this month -- Cablevision demonstrated the technology at a theater at Madison Square Garden, where the game was played. The crowd reportedly behaved as if it were watching the live players. Much of the 3D equipment was in place from a live 3D telecast of a Black Eyed Peas concert at the stadium earlier in the month.
