Review of Interludes After Midnight Album by Blockhead

Tony Simon aka Blockhead releases his fifth studio album on Ninja Tunes. Two years on from critically lauded 'The Music Scene', he's back having travelled around the world acquiring ideas and samples from the '80s and '90s to bring back the sound that influenced sample culture. Certainly this creative endeavour captures an innocence of production and a naive sampling vibe that reminds me of the '90s, from the Dope on Plastic releases to the funky production of Money Mark. Blockhead is certainly trying to keep fresh and creative in a world of over-production; keeping this minimal, in a hip hop sense, creates a definite charm for this release.

Blockhead Interludes After Midnight Album

Music goes through cycles and 'Interludes After Midnight' has a definite nostalgia of a time where sampling culture was still innovative and underground so he certainly has succeeded in his vision, creating an '80s/'90s sounding album. It's not a bad collection of tracks and could be a smoker's delight or a refreshing return to a sound that is truly over-produced in our world of modern technology. Subtle and niche for sure.
