Stockport five-piece Blossoms have hit number one on the UK album chart with their self-titled debut album. The band say they are “made up” over the success of the album, which outsold its nearest chart rival by 9,500 copies.

Speaking to The Official Charts Company the band said: "We're absolutely made up that the album has gone to Number One. From the scaffolding yard to the top of the charts, who'd have thought it? Viva Stockport!”

Blossoms kicked off the year by being featured on the BBC's Sound Of new music list for 2016. Their debut album was then heavily featured on BBC Radio 1, Radio 2 and 6 Music all week, helping to boost sales.

They ended up outselling nearest chart rival British rapper Giggs and his album Landlord by around 9,500 copies, leaving it at the number two spot. At number three is Drake’s Views, which is celebrating its 15th week on the chart.

At number four is ELO's best of compilation All Over The World, while at number five is last week's chart-topper, the self-titled album by Viola Beach. Other new entries include Wild Beasts at nine with their fifth album Boy King and Moose Blood at 10 with Blush.

Over on the singles chart, Major Lazer's collaboration with Justin Bieber and MØ, 'Cold Water', is at number one for a second week. Bieber is also at number two with his DJ Snake collaboration, 'Let Me Love You’.

At three is Calum Scott's cover of Robyn’s 'Dancing On My Own' and at four is Jonas Blue ft JP Cooper with ‘Perfect Strangers’. The top five is then rounded off by Chainsmokers, celebrating their 18th week on the chart, with ‘Don’t Let Me Down’.
