Coachella revellers in California were transported back to 1990s Britain on Friday (12Apr13) as Blur and the Stone Roses headlined the first night of the 2013 festival.

Blur followed Modest Mouse and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs onto the main stage with a hits-fuelled set, which included Girls & Boys, There's No Other Way, Tracy Jacks, Beetlebum, Song 2 and This is a Low.

British actor Phil Daniels made the trip with the band and performed Parklife with Blur, while frontman Damon Albarn made a couple of references to Britain's awful weather and grey skies, admitting he was enjoying the sunshine of the California desert.

The band ended the set by dedicating For Tomorrow to the California-based fans, who supported Albarn and company back in 1993 when they first toured America.

The Stone Roses then hit the stage and kept the festival show going until past midnight, performing hits including I Wanna Be Adored and Fools Gold.

Other Friday highlights included afternoon sets from Jake Bugg, Stars, Of Monsters and Men and Lee Scratch Perry, while Nick Cave's Grinderman and Jurassic 5 were among the other acts making evening appearances.

Still to come this weekend - Red Hot Chili Peppers, Phoenix, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Vampire Weekend, Sigur Ros, New Order and rappers Wu-Tang Clan.
