How Much Of The Plot Can You Guess From This "Better Call Saul" Teaser?

Bob Odenkirk Vince Gilligan

It’s happening! It’s really happening! Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul now has a trailer, but better still, it has a release date. AMC dropped the video yesterday, touting a February release date. So it won’t be long now, Breaking Bad fans.

Bob Odenkirk
Bob Odenkirk finally stars in his own show as crooked lawyer Saul Goodman.

However, if you’re expecting a full trailer with some plot and maybe a few of the new characters thrown in, you’re out of luck. Apparently, the folks at AMC have learned a thing or two about teasers, because this one was just eight seconds long and still enough to get us all excited. Things we learned: Saul Goodman/Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) used to have hair once upon a time. Err… that’s about it really.

'Better Call Saul' Set 6 Years Before 'Breaking Bad', Gus Fring To Return

Bob Odenkirk Vince Gilligan Bryan Cranston

Better Call Saul, the Breaking Bad spinoff show focused on Bob Oderkirk's character Saul Goodman, will be set six years before the events of Breaking Bad, creator Vince Gilligan has announced. During his appearance at the Television Critics Association's press tour, Gilligan also teased that fan favorite characters could return, though only if it "makes sense".

"If it makes sense we'll do it, if it doesn't make sense we won't," he replied when asked about the return of Walter White, in particular.

‘Better Call Saul’ Gets Delayed And Renewed, But What Does It Mean?

Bob Odenkirk

For those excited for the upcoming ‘Breaking Bad’ spin off, ‘Better Call Saul,’ there’s some great news: it’s already been renewed for a second season before a single episode has even aired. Now, of course, some bad news, too: a single episode for the first season won’t premiere at the end of 2014 like previously planned. AMC now has it set for a debut in early 2015. "When introducing any series, especially one with the DNA of Breaking Bad, there are countless factors to consider in making sure the show gets the launch it deserves,” said Charlie Collier, president of AMC, in a statement.

Better Call Saul
Can 'Better Call Saul' be as successful as 'Breaking Bad'?

Getting the launch it deserves is an understatement. Following up the success of ‘Breaking Bad’ is a difficult task in itself, but delaying the show’s release could negatively impact it if it doesn’t live up to expectations when it does eventually air. Luckily, ‘Breaking Bad’ mastermind Vince Gilligan, who is directing the pilot to ‘Better Call Saul,’ will take on co-showrunning duties with producer Peter Gould, and if that’s not a recipe for success, then what is? In addition to Bob Odenkirk reprising his role as Saul Goodman, you’ve also got Jonathan Banks making an appearance as Mike Ehrmantraut, while actor Michael McKean is set to play the role as one of Goodman’s attorneys.

Better Call Saul Is Coming In 2015 - Season 2 In 2016

Bob Odenkirk Vince Gilligan

AMC know Better Call Saul will drag in viewers, regardless of how the Breaking Bad remake goes - whether Vince Gilligan totally screws it up or actually provides a meaningful addition to the lore. That’s why they’ve renewed it before season one, episode one has even aired.

The first series of the show will premiere in early 2015, with the second set to hit screens in 2016. It’s very much a two good-one bad situation for AMC, who announced the delay, the renewal and released a first look picture all in the same day.

'Better Call Saul' Has Been Renewed For Season 2. Which Is Very Good News.

Bob Odenkirk

Better Call Saul hasn't even finished filming yet, but AMC have decided to take their option on a second season already. Perhaps that, and the newly released photo, are designed to remedy the fans disappointed by today's third bit of BCS news: the show has been delayed until 2015.

Many will be watching the AMC spin-off because they genuinely believe it'll provide a worthy back story to one of Breaking Bad's most entertaining characters: Saul Goodman, the criminal lawyer charged with handling Walter White and Jesse Pinkman's exponentially tricky situations. But others will be watching, like me, with a pure sense of morbid fascination. I don't think it'll be very good, but I enjoyed Breaking Bad enough to know that I'll find something to like. Plus I am - of course - interested to see what they do with Saul's back story.

Saul Goodman Has A Rival: Michael McKean Cast In AMC's 'Better Call Saul'

Michael McKean Bob Odenkirk

Saul Goodman had it pretty tough in Breaking Bad. As any screenwriter will tell you, conflict is the crux of any narrative. Saul’s came in the form of Walter White and any trouble that came his way - often that trouble was brought on himself. Basically, Goodman was getting it from all angles.

Bob OdenkirkOdenkirk took a great character and made him brilliant

But there is no Walter White in “Better Call Saul”, AMC’s spin-off of the hugely popular drama, at least not in the same capacity. So Saul’s conflicts – the constant battles that drive the narrative forward in view of some kind of resolution – will have to come from somewhere else, kicking off with Michael McKean, who will play Dr. Thurber, a “brilliant attorney who is now restricted by an unusual affliction,” according to Deadline.

Poll: Should Aaron Paul Reprise His Role As Jesse Pinkman In Better Call Saul?

Aaron Paul Bryan Cranston Vince Gilligan Bob Odenkirk

If anyone needed convincing that Aaron Paul is well and truly typecast as Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad, then one look at his press run for Need for Speed should do the trick: the actor has been talking about a possible return to the hit meth drama by starring in the prequel spin-off, Better Call Saul. But should he be going back to the franchise that made career what it is today?

Breaking Bad Walt and JesseAaron Paul and Bryan Cranston as Jesse and Walter White in Breaking Bad

Breaking Bad was and will forever be remembered as one of the finest shows ever to grace the small screen, but if Paul wants to shake off that Jesse tag ever, perhaps distancing himself from Better Call Saul would be a wiser move. What’s more is that spin-offs have a tendency to be – for want of a better word – rubbish.

For those of you who thought you’d seen the last of Mike Ehrmantraut, his return for the Breaking Bad spin-off, Better Call Saul, will come as an exciting revelation. But there’s more to Jonathan Banks’ role reprisal.

Jonathan BanksJonathan Banks is back for more Breaking Bad action

No doubt we'll see Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul pop up as Walter White and Jesse Pinkman at some point in the new spin off, and of course Bob Odenkirk will be playing Saul again. We get the feeling Banks is going to play a far more important role.

No Half Measures: Mike's Back For 'Breaking Bad' Spin-Off 'Better Call Saul'

Jonathan Banks Bob Odenkirk Bryan Cranston Aaron Paul

The Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul will feature at least two familiar faces on its cast, as Jonathan Banks has been announced to join the production. On Breaking Bad, Banks played everyone’s favorite serial killer for hire, Mike Ehrmantraut and he is going to reprise the role in the Albuquerque-set prequel, The Hollywood Reporter confirms, based on statements from AMC and Sony reps.

Banks will reprise his role as killer-for-hire Mike Ehrmantraut.

Banks himself is yet to comment on the news. On the inevitable danger of sequel fatigue, Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan had this to say back in October: "There's obviously a danger inherent in doing a spinoff, but I just love the character of Saul Goodman [Odenkirk] so much, and part of me doesn't want to say no to this world."

Nebraska Review

Excellent

After travelling to Hawaii with George Clooney for The Descendants, Payne returns to middle America for this gentle, enjoyable exploration of family connections. Featuring an award-winning performance from Bruce Dern, the film harks back to Payne's About Schmidt as well as David Lynch's The Straight Story in the way it tracks straightforward characters across a rural landscape.

Dern plays Woody, a ramshackle drunk who lives in Montana and is convinced by a marketing mail-out that he has won a million dollars. His wife Kate (Squibb) has given up trying to talk to him, and son Ross (Odenkirk) is distracted by his new anchorman career. But younger son David (Forte) tries to explain the scam before giving in and agreeing to drive Woody to Nebraska to claim his prize. After all, this gives him a rare chance to bond with his rascally dad. Along the way, their journey takes some unexpected sideroads as they visit Woody's hometown, meeting friends and relatives from his past.

The film has a timeless quality thanks to Payne's strikingly astute direction and the elegant black and white photography by Phedon Papamichael. It also has a rhythmic pace, boosted by Mark Orton's tuneful score, infused with both spiky wit and understated sentiment. The key here is David's discovery of who his father really is: an unusually generous man who can't quite balance the reality of how his family and friends have treated him over the years.

Hilarious 'Breaking Bad' Alternative Ending Leaks Online Ahead Of Box Set Release

Bryan Cranston Jane Kaczmarek Bob Odenkirk

Before Breaking Bad became the biggest TV phenomenon since, well, TV started, Bryan Cranston was best known as the loveably hapless Hal, from the Fox sitcom Malcolm in the Middle. Whilst he has gone on to immortalise himself as the meth kingpin Walter White/Heisenberg in Breaking Bad, there are many who still remember Cranston best for his turn as the head of the Malcolm... household, which will no doubt make this alternative ending all the sweeter for those who do.

Walter White
The alternative ending is much less dramatic than this one

The alternative ending, due to appear in the extras content on the upcoming series box set of Breaking Bad, plays heavily on the fan theories surrounding both of Cranston's most popular appearances on the small screen. Many have speculated that the events of Malcolm in the Middle follow on from Breaking Bad, or vice versa, and this brilliant parody plays exceptionally well on this fan theory. Pairing Cranston with his Malcolm... co-star Jane Kaczmarek once again, the new ending imagines that Hal has dreamt the entirety of the Breaking Bad set up.

Things To Look Forward To Beyond 'Breaking Bad': Aaron Paul And Saul Goodman

Aaron Paul Bryan Cranston Anna Gunn Bob Odenkirk

The end of Breaking Bad is near; season five part two has finally started, and will wrap up after seven more episodes on September 27th. But don’t be too sad, we know it’ll be a thrill-ride, and once it’s over, there’s plenty more to look forward to.

The casting choice of Bryan Cranston as Walter White was a stroke of genius. His previous work as Hal in Malcolm in The Middle had some people confused, but eventually his reputation added to his transformation from goofy work-a-day father to drug lynchpin; that and his Emmy award-winning performances.

Watch Seth Rogen's (And Others) Auditions For 'The Office' [Video]

Steve Carell Seth Rogen Bob Odenkirk John Cho Eric Stonestreet Kathryn Hahn

Audition tapes are probably… the best thing ever, especially when well-known stars are going for roles. These Office auditions, in which the hopefuls are reading the script from the British version of the award-winning sitcom, are priceless.

Seth Rogen as Dwight? Bob Odenkirk as Michael, and, more importantly, not as Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad because of commitment to The Office, John Cho or Adam Scott as Jim? Eric Stonestreet as Kevin and Kathryn Hahn as Pam? No way – this is all very wrong. Apart from Stonestreet, the Modern Family actor does a brilliant stoney-faced Kevin, and is truly reminiscent of Keith – the cult hero from the original series.

As you’ll know, if you’re a fan of The Office, none of these actors got any parts. And as a fan of The Office, you’ll be pleased to know these autions are part of the bonus features on Season 9’s DVD boxset. Back in March, Rainn Wilson, who did get a part in The Office, and kept it, released a photo of the original audition list for the U.S. series, which included Mary Lynn Rajskub, Hamish Linklater and Anne Dudek.
