The film has been raising controversy ever since it hit cinemas.
Over the past few weeks, American Sniper has been touted as an example of quality military action, one of Clint Eastwood’s best, and even received several award nods. However, the film has also ignited plenty of controversy over its depictions of a soldier’s return home. Ostensibly, American Sniper is a character study of a tortured soldier.
Bradley Cooper portrays Chris Kyle in American Sniper.
The movie’s detractors point out Chris Kyle’s apparent lack of trauma – both in real-life and his onscreen portrayal. Intentionally or not, Kyle has painted himself as a remorseless sniper who said his job was “fun” and wished he could return to Iraq to fight even more, and who made millions of dollars and gained worldwide fame writing about his exploits.

The movie has been criticised for glossing over the stories of actual Iraqi citizens and using them as props to Kyle’s story. Filmmaker Clint Eastwood has responded to critics by noting he was against going to war in Iraq, and was sceptical of the war in Afghanistan as well. But Eastwood’s personal views don’t really come across in Kyle’s account, which paints the war as both just and enjoyable – and, at certain moments – maybe the best thing to happen to the former SEAL and most lethal sniper in US military history.
