He might be about to release a solo album, but The Killers' frontman Brandon Flowers looked at what the future might hold for his main band in a new interview, admitting they might “need a little kick in the pants” to get their act together.

Flowers was speaking to Rolling Stone magazine ahead of the release of The Desired Effect, the second album he’s made away from The Killers. However, he reassured fans of the group that rumours of them being on “hiatus” are exaggerated.

He said: “There are a couple of remarks made by Dave [Keuning], our guitar player, that made it sound a little bit more ominous than it really was. And so it makes people wonder. But, no, everything is fine.”

“I've been talking to Dave and he hasn't sounded this excited about making music in a long time. So that, in turn, makes me excited. I feel like when he's at his best, and when we're all collaborating, is when the Killers are at their best, and that's what we really need. I've said it before – I think we need a little bit of a kick in the pants, and hopefully it's coming.”

The Killers wrapped up a mammoth world tour in late 2013, on which they supported their fourth album Battle Born. About the realities of touring, Flowers said: “it can become just sort of too cyclical. It's like, Oh, it's time to get back together, we're making a record, then we go on tour.’ And it's this big sort of machine, now.”

“And we really need to find a way to get a little bit of that drive and that hunger back that we had earlier on, and not just look at it as an opportunity to make more money and make a record and go tour.”

The Desired Effect was preceded by a single ‘Can’t Deny My Love’ back in March, which suggested a synth-pop direction. Flowers teamed up with Vampire Weekend and Haim producer Ariel Rechtshaid to create the record, about which he told The Guardian last month he felt that every song could be a single. It is set for release on May 18th.
