'Breaking Bad' saw off the challenge of 'True Detective' at the Emmys.
Breaking Bad's explosive fifth and final season dominated the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, picking up most of the major drama prizes ahead of 'Game of Thrones' and 'True Detective'. AMC's meth-drama took five Emmys in total, with Aaron Paul taking home best supporting actor for the third time.
Bryan Cranston in 'Breaking Bad'
"My god, Breaking Bad - it has changed my life and I am standing up here because of one man and that is Vince Gilligan [show creator]," Paul said, accepting his prize (he also triumphed in 2010 and 2012). "Thank you. I miss him. I love him. The best cast and crew I've ever worked with and for. There's not a single day that goes by that I don't miss running to work."

Elsewhere, Bryan Cranston won best lead actor for his turn as Walter White, while Anna Gunn won lead actress. Only The Good Wife and True Detective stopped a Breaking Bad whitewash, with Julianna Margulies and Cary Joji Fukunaga taking home awards.
Breaking Bad took home the evening's most coveted award - outstanding drama series - and also best writing for the stunning 'Ozymandias', often considered the finest episode in the show's history.
Breaking Bad was a major hit for AMC
Given the dominance of AMC's drama, it was disappointment for 'True Detective', which was heavily tipped to triumphant at the Primetime Emmys after gaining critical acclaim for its first season. Cranston pipping Matthew McConaughey to best lead actor may have raised a few eyebrows.

As mentioned, HBO's hugely popular fantasy Game of Thrones went home empty handed while Netflix's flagships show 'House of Cards' and comedy 'Orange is the New Black' were both snubbed entirely.
It was the perfect result for AMC, Vince Gillian and his team, who continue to film the Breaking Bad spin-off show 'Better Call Saul', with Bob Odernkirk in the lead. The comedy-drama has already been renewed for season two, with a release date for its opener set for 2015.
