After 62 episodes, clocking in at over 30 hours, it’s fair to say audiences had invested somewhat in the trials and tribulations of Walter White in Breaking Bad. Ending such a monumental journey is difficult – as the writers would attest – but choosing the perfect song can ease the pressure somewhat.

And that’s exactly what music supervisor Thomas Golubic did; he chose the right song.

It’s funny to think that when Badfinger wrote Baby Blue prior to its 1972 release, that it was a simple love song, but that it would be attributed to the love of blue meth amphetamine by Walter White in AMC’s seminal drama.

"When he said, 'I think this is the right song for the closing of the finale,' I didn't really hear it," Golubic said. "I thought it was an odd little love song. But in came the dailies, with that wonderful crane shot moving over Walter White, and once we played the song, [we thought], 'Oh, I get it now'.”

The finale pulled in a record amount of viewers and tied up all the loose ends the show had masterfully frayed into intricate positions. Critically, it was a raging success, with the vast majority of the press agreeing that it was the perfect way to end the show.

“This is a love-affair story of Walt and his love of science, and this was his greatest product – his greatest triumph as a chemist. It wasn't about Walter White as a criminal or a murderer or an awful person. It was him ending on his own terms. It felt creatively right,” added Golubic.

Streaming of the song has risen by 9000% following the finale.

The lyrics, “Guess I got what I deserved. Kept you waiting there too long my love. All that time, without a word. Didn’t know you’d think that I’d forget, or I’d regret. Special love I had for you. My baby blue,” seem to talk to both his family and the Meth he created, and were delightfully fitting.

"I thought, 'Oh dear God,' this song was in The Departed soundtrack. If someone uses a song in an incredibly iconic and wonderful way, the last thing I want to do is utilise it again. It seemed like the perfect song to end Walt's last ride into town," said Golubic to The Radio Times.
