The Other Woman Review

Very Good

While the story isn't particularly original, and the movie tends to drift over the top into broad slapstick, this comedy wins us over due to the camaraderie between the characters. Most refreshingly, this is a film about women teaming up rather than scratching each others' eyes out. So it continually catches us off guard in all the right ways.

In Manhattan, lawyer Carly (Cameron Diaz) has finally met the perfect man in Mark (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). But just as their relationship is about to shift into something much more serious, she discovers that he has a wife, Kate (Leslie Mann), in the suburbs. Shocked, Carly and Kate realise that Mark is the person they should be angry at, so they team up to get even. When they discover that he has another mistress, Amber (Kate Upton), they recruit her to their plan as well. And then they find evidence that his business dealings are more than a little dodgy.

While the plot lends itself to a blackly comical approach, director Nick Cassavetes instead keeps everything silly and simplistic, letting the actresses overplay their scenes. Sometimes this results in something rather hilarious, but it also undermines any credibility the story might have. Mann and Coster-Waldau are the most guilty in this sense, chomping madly on the scenery. Instead, it's the way each character works together that brings the situations to life and keeps us laughing. Although a more confident approach to the material would have made the film much stronger.

The Counselor Review

OK

This film proves that all the right ingredients don't necessarily make a movie work. Even with top-drawer filmmakers and actors, this dramatic thriller simply never grabs our interest. It looks great, and everyone is giving it their all, but the story and characters remain so badly undefined that we can't identify with either.

The story's set on the US-Mexico border, where a slick lawyer (Fassbender) known as "the Counsellor" has slightly too much going on in his life. He has just proposed to his dream woman Laura (Cruz), while he's planning to open a nightclub with Reiner (Bardem). For extra cash, he's organising a massive cocaine shipment with Westray (Pitt). And it's this drug deal that goes wrong, creating a mess that engulfs Reiner and Laura, as well as Reiner's shrewd girlfriend Malkina (Diaz). As his life collapses around him, the Counsellor scrambles to salvage what he can, even as he realises that it'll be a miracle if anyone survives.

There are problems at every level of this production. McCarthy's first original script is simply too literary, putting verbose dialog into the actors mouths that never sounds like people talking to each other. Fassbender and Bardem are good enough to get away with this, but Pitt and Diaz struggle. Both Fassbender and Cruz bring out some wrenching emotions in their scenes, but their characters are never much more than cardboard cutouts. In fact, no one in this story feels like a fully fleshed-out person. And the little we know about each character makes most of them fairly unlikeable.

'Jackass Present: Bad Grandpa' Looks Like The Early Favourite To Top Weekend Box Office

Johnny Knoxville Sandra Bullock George Clooney Paul Greengrass Tom Hanks Brad Pitt Ridley Scott Michael Fassbender Javier Bardem Cameron Diaz

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa is predicted to earn close to $30 million at the box office in it's opening weekend, according to Deadline, making it the most likely candidate to finish at the top of the box office come the end of the week. This means that after three weeks of dominating the US box office, Gravity may finally be replaced as America's favourite movie at cinemas.

Bad Grandpa
Bad Grandpa should be an easy weekend winner

Depending on what side of the $30 mil. mark it lands on, the film can become either the third or fourth most successful R-rated film of the year in terms of opening box office revenue. Should the film exceed expectations even further, it could potentially place even higher. The film already made an estimated $11 - 12 mil. on the opening day of the weekend - Friday, 25 October - and could be well on its way to exceeding the $30 mil. mark should the numbers continue to add up. Not bad for a film that only cost $15 million to make.

In A World... Review

Essential

After playing comical sidekicks in rom-coms like No Strings Attached and What Happens in Vegas, Lake Bell emerges as a rising-star filmmaker with the smartest, funniest comedy of the year. Winner of the screenwriting award at Sundance, this script is painfully hilarious, drawing on the characters' personalities to take us into a previously unseen side of the movie industry. It's also a rare Hollywood movie that refuses to shy away from anything.

We're talking about voiceover artists here, specifically those who provide the rumbling commentary for movie trailers. The late Don LaFountaine was the voice behind all of those iconic "In a world..." trailers, and now a studio wants to revive them for a new epic quadrilogy. The top contender for the job is Sam (Melamed), a veteran who decides to let his protege, the egotistical womaniser Gustav (Marino), have the job. Then Sam's voice-coach daughter Carol (Bell) throws her hat in the ring, which is unthinkable because a woman has never narrated this kind of trailer. She prepares for the audition with the help of a love-struck sound engineer (Martin), but is distracted by issues between her sister and brother-in-law (Watkins and Corddry) and the fact that her dad's new girlfriend (Holden) is younger than she is.

Bell juggles all of these plot strands brilliantly as a writer, director and actor, generously giving her costars the most riotously funny dialog while Carol pings around between them. And since we see everything through her eyes, she emerges as a hugely engaging woman who is smart, skilled and also likeably flawed. Every performance is natural and amusing, with the kind of astutely witty dialog actors can really sink their teeth into. And there are some uproarious cameos along the way, including Offerman as a wry colleague, Davis as a studio head, Longoria as a vocal client and Diaz as the star of a Hunger Games-style saga.

"Annie" Movie To Feature Cameron Diaz As Grumpy Orphanage Headmistress

Cameron Diaz Will Gluck Jamie Foxx Quvenzhane Wallis Will Smith Jay Z

If an Annie movie, produced by Will Smith and Jay-Z and directed by Jay Z sounds a bit strange, wait till you hear this: Cameron Diaz has been cast as Miss Hannigan. According to Deadline, the actress has been selected to play the orphanage matron, who hates children, but loves boozing in a big screen adaptation of the comic strip turned musical. The actress has been showing a sassier (to put it mildly) side in films like Bad Teacher of late, but it’s still a bit difficult to picture her as the vitriolic Miss Hannigan.

Diaz is taking on a new challenge with her Annie role.

Diaz will reportedly partner up with Quvenzhane Wallis, who became the youngest Oscar nominee for her role in Beasts of the Southern Wild. Quvenzhane will be portraying Annie, while the role of daddy Warbucks has been handed over to none other than Jamie Foxx. The Oscar-nominated actor is currently knee-deep in promotional efforts for his new movie White House Down, but will presumably begin shooting later this year, since the release date for the Annie movie is set for 2014.

The Counsellor Trailer

'The Counsellor' tells the story of a naive lawyer who holds the belief that dabbling in drug-trafficking is the best way to earn a little extra cash. However, that dabbling evolves into full-blown dealing which consumes his life and infects with all the corruption, betrayal and pain he thought he could avoid. Now with some seriously ruthless criminals on his tail, he begins to realise that there is nothing that these people will not do to get what they want and the odds on his life begin to get higher and higher. Unless he can work out who his friends are, he has no hope of returning to his normal life, but in a world where disloyalty affects everyone's relationships, he begins to wonder if he really has anyone there for him at all.

Directed by the triple Oscar nominated Sir Ridley Scott ('Prometheus', 'Gladiator', 'Alien'), this high-energy, gritty thriller is all about corruption and how smalls mistakes can lead to major consequences. The screenplay has been written by novellist Cormac McCarthy ('No Country for Old Men', 'All the Pretty Horses') and it features an exciting, star-studded cast ensemble. It is set to reach UK cinemas everywhere on November 15th 2013.

Cameron Diaz Begins Filming New Scenes For 'The Other Woman' [Pictures]

Cameron Diaz Leslie Mann Kate Upton Nikolaj Coster-Waldau

Cameron Diaz is currently working on the upcoming film The Other Woman, with the blonde-bombshell set to appear in a still-unverified role in the revenge comedy. The film is still only gradually making it's way towards the cinema screen, however it is still on course to make it's planned spring 2014 release date.

The film will also star Game of Thrones' Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Knocked Up's Leslie Mann, with Kate Upton and Nicki Minaj also lined up to appear in their first proper acting jobs. The story follows one of Waldau's disgruntled lovers, who teams up with his wife to plot a mutual revenge when they find out that he isn't the man he claims to be, but is instead a notorious love rat who has scorned more than just the scheming two.

The pictures of Diaz were taken around Tribeca, New York City, and features Diaz with co-star Mann as they walk down a street whilst talking to one another. It is believed that Mann will star as Coster-Waldau's aggrieved wife, with Diaz possibly appearing as her friend - not another hard-done love interest. Diaz has previously been spotted filming scenes with Mann and Kate Upton on West Broadway between Chambers & Park Place earlier this year.

Fringe's Ari Graynor is taking on the staring role of an angry divorcee who becomes a teacher to find her next man.

The announcement has come a week after the network initially unveiled their fall line-up, that also included the comedy Crazy Ones, which boasts Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Gellar as its stars. The Bad Teacher re-working won't make it to the upcoming network line-up though, and is likely to be held off until mid-season at least.

A Liar's Autobiography Review

Good

Subtitled "The Untrue Story of Monty Python's Graham Chapman", this outrageously colourful animated movie certainly can't be pigeonholed as a documentary or a biopic, even though there are elements of each. The filmmakers use recordings of Chapman reading the book about his life, then hire teams of animators to create a stream-of-consciousness 3D tribute. It's not particularly easy to follow, and the absurdly Pythonesque approach isn't always successful. But the film is such an oddity that fans won't want to miss it.

Whatever it is, this isn't a straightforward retelling of Chapman's life story, although it does loosely fill in the details, with each chapter animated in a distinctly different style. It begins with his rather odd childhood, followed by his years at Cambridge, where he met Cleese, Palin, Gilliam and Jones and formed Monty Python. Their TV sketch show was launched in 1969, an unexpected hit that propelled them to stardom. Along the way, Chapman determines that he's 70 percent gay, and indulges in all the alcohol and sex he could find. He died at age 48 of throat cancer in 1989.

The film is a riotous collection of animation styles, from stop-motion to paper cut-outs. Woven into these segments are TV clips, movie scenes and interviews from the archives, and the surviving Pythons supply the voices along with special guests like Stephen Fry and, yes, Cameron Diaz. It feels oddly rambling, going down random sideroads and indulging in moments that cross lines of taste and propriety. Some segments are sharp and pointed, while others take too long to get to their punchlines. But maybe these are inside jokes we simply don't understand.

Little has caused more contention in the contactmusic office than our recent discussion about the Christmas films list! Obviously, everyone has their own favourite, and to them that will always be the top of the list. One thing that became all too clear to us was that - with the exception of Elf & Bad Santa - there really hasn't been too many full blown Christmas films so we'd like to make a plea to Bill Murray and the other Hollywood greats - PLEASE make a new (top quality) Christmas film to join these festive favourites!

I can't say we particularly advocate parents encouraging their offspring to watch films above their age certificate, but it appears we all grew up in houses that didn't really mind what we watched - and let's face it, some of the best Christmas films might have a few boobs or rowdy drunken behaviour... As children of the 80's and 90's, we're fully aware that there's original to some of these remakes, but as is always the way, these are the films we grew up with and as such, they are our favourites.

Enough explanation, in no particular order here are the films we recommend you watch over the holidays!

Gambit Review

Good

Remade from a 1966 romp starring Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine, this con artist action-comedy is enjoyably silly but never much more than that. Part of the problem is a lack of chemistry between stars Colin Firth and Cameron Diaz, and the film focuses on goofy slapstick instead of a coherent plot. So we may chuckle along the way, but it's hard to be interested in anything that happens.

Firth is at the centre as Harry, a London art expert who has a score to settle with his arrogant billionaire boss Lionel (Rickman). So he sets up an elaborate scam involving a fake Monet painted by his talented pal Wingate (Courtenay). But they need the help of a sassy Texan, PJ (Diaz), to make it work, and she doesn't play along as Harry imagines she will. Soon she's flirting shamelessly with Lionel while Harry sneaks around in the background setting up the con and struggling to pay for her extravagant stay in the Savoy. Meanwhile, Lionel is trying to make a deal with a group of hard-bargaining Japanese businessmen.

While the Coen brothers' script bursts with absurd wit, Hoffman directs the film as a mindless farce, missing every chance for black comedy. From the animated Pink Panther-style titles, the tone is light and frothy, the characters are paper thin and the plot's convolutions never seem to amount to anything. Most of the big set-pieces are irrelevant asides, such as a half-hearted scene involving the lion that's featured far too prominently on the movie poster. Or a long sequence in which Firth cavorts around the Savoy without his trousers. It certainly doesn't help that Firth and Diaz never generate even a spark of attraction between them.

A Week In Movies Featuring: Argo, My Brother The Devil, Colin Firth, Cameron Diaz, Alan Rickman, Hitchcock, Emma Stone, Penelope Cruz And More!

As big movies like Skyfall and Argo open in the USA and UK respectively, it's the smaller titles that are getting the most attention. The British independent drama My Brother the Devil won awards at Sundance and festivals in Berlin, London, Los Angeles and San Francisco, and has garnered four-star reviews across the board from UK critics this weekend. Now the public gets a chance to see it.

In London, the stars turned out this week for the premiere of Gambit, a remake of the 1966 heist comedy. The film's stars Colin Firth, Cameron Diaz, Alan Rickman and Tom Courtenay were on hand both for the red carpet premiere and a meet-the-filmmakers event at London's Apple Store.
Hitchcock Trailer

Meanwhile, Helen Mirren has been doing Q&As in London for her new film Hitchcock, in which she plays Alma Reville, wife of Alfred Hitchcock (Anthony Hopkins). The movie traces the making of Psycho with Janet Leigh (Scarlett Johansson), Vera Miles (Jessica Biel) and Anthony Perkins (James D'Arcy). A new trailer makes it look like a lot of fun. And a probable awards contender too.

Gambit Premier: Cameron Diaz And Colin Firth Talk Nudity And New Skills.

Cameron Diaz Colin Firth Alan Rickman Michael Hoffman Coen Brothers

Eccentric British/American comedy 'Gambit' premiered in London last night at the Empire in Leicester square. It stars Cameron Diaz, Colin Firth and Alan Rickman, and was directed by Michael Hoffman, with a script written by the Coen Brothers. With a line-up like that you can't really go wrong!

The remake of the 1966 film of the same name follows an art curator (Firth) who is sick of his boss (Rickman) and decides to take sweet revenge, in a variety of hilarious ways, aided by cowgirl PJ Puznowski (Diaz). Despite being written by Americans and directed by another American, it's a very British comedy.

On the red carpet Firth, Diaz and Hoffman spoke to ITN and the Daily Mail, and spoke about the trials and tribulations of working on the film. Cameron and Firth spoke to ITN about the nudity in the film, that has already been widely talked about. Cameron said "nothing's gratuitous, it's all for a purpose." Which was followed by a self-defacing quip from Firth who said: "My legs are there for gratuitous comedy, and they've been shamelessly exploited." Firth only really loses his trousers in the film, but Alan Rickman's character Lord Lionel Shabandar spends some of it in his birthday suit. The making of the film wasn't all levels of nudity, Cameron also got to try her hand at real life cow-girling, in an interview with the Daily Mail she said "I got to do a little lassoing, a little roping on the cattle." Adding, "It was a lot of fun."

Justin Timberlake And Jessica Biel To Get Married This Week?

Justin Timberlake Jessica Biel Britney Spears Cameron Diaz

Justin Timberlake And Jessica Biel are to get married this week in Italy at a glamorous and star-studded ceremony, US Weekly reports.

Rumours had been rife about the upcoming nuptials of Timberlake and Biel, who sound more like a 70's crime fighting duo than a A-list couple, but they are an A-list couple and they're getting married soon so we'll shut up. The couple threw a casual pre-wedding party on Wednesday in Puglia, Italy, at the Cala Masciola beach on the Adriatic Sea, as you do. Guests included comedian Andy Samberg, who co-starred with Timberlake in an Emmy-winning "Saturday Night Live" digital short and the film "Friends With Benefits," a romantic comedy. This is the first wedding for singer-actor Timberlake, 31, since his high profile dating relationships with Britney Spears and Cameron Diaz didn't turn into wedding bells. And it's same for actress Biel, 30. They announced their engagement at the beginning of this year.

"Most celebrities do a wedding in their home country first, to make it official, and then they have a symbolic ceremony in Italy afterward, so they file no paperwork in Italy," Italian wedding specialist Diana Sorensen, owner of Sugokuii Events told E! "Personally, with Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, I do not feel they will have a legal ceremony in Italy. My feeling is that, like most celebrities, they've already done something in the United States."

Sandra Bullock To Chelsea Handler: Stop Sleeping With Guests, Lay Off The Booze!

Chelsea Handler Sandra Bullock Gwyneth Paltrow Cameron Diaz Jennifer Aniston

Chelsea Handler returned with the season premiere of her new late night talk show 'Chelsea Lately' on Monday evening (October 15, 2012), calling in a couple of favors to give the programme an added boost.

Handler dipped into her bulging book of celebrity contacts, recruiting Gwyneth Paltrow and Cameron Diaz to rap, Jennifer Aniston to cry about her recent engagement to Justin Theroux, and Sandra Bullock to strip in the staff showers. Yep, you heard us correctly. In a skit for the show, Bullock and Handler were shown road-toasting the studio's new facilities though the Oscar winning actress had a little advice for the talk show host. After telling her friend to stop calling herself the "white Oprah", Bullock said, "You have a responsibility to be a respectable talk show host. This comes directly from Oprah's mouth to my ear, to my mouth, out of my mouth, into your ear, down your body, out your vagina, up my vagina and out my ass." Nice. The actress also told Handler to stop sleeping with her guests, to which the host guiltily replied, "I don't sleep with that many anymore... just some of the rappers."

Handler's ability to land regular A-listers for 'Chelsea Lately' will be a huge advantage for the E! network as the show begins its new season. Catch it every Monday, at 11pm.

Cameron Diaz And Gwyneth Paltrow Rap In Honor Of Chelsea Handler’s New Studio

Gwyneth Paltrow Cameron Diaz Chelsea Handler

Actresses Gwyneth Paltrow and Cameron Diaz tried their hand at rapping in honour of fellow Hollywood blonde Chelsea Handler. The ladies slammed their friend for her sex life and drinking habits, though it was all done in good humor. While the rap did little for Diaz and Paltrow’s street cred, it was obvious that the actresses do not take themselves too seriously and enjoy a challenge once in a while. Diaz took on the part of a beat-boxer, while Paltrow was spitting lyrics like "You like black guys, white guys, whoever's around. Your bedroom looks like it's a lost and found. We kind of like you because you're blonde like us, but we can't hang with you in public 'cause you drink too much."

Though the starlets themselves are no strangers to heavy partying, the rap hints at some truths around Handler’s party history and contains lines like “Yo, Chelsea. We heard that you got a brand new studio. But we know that you got on TV by being a ho.”

The comedienne is far from just a party girl, however, having built an extremely successful career as an entertainer and TV presenter. At 37, she has performed as a stand-up comedian, acted in numerous works in TV and cinema, and is hosting her own talk show, Chelsea Lately. The 5th season of the show is set to air this autumn on the E! Network in the USA and re-runs of the show are broadcast on E! in the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

What To Expect When You're Expecting Review

Weak
The odd moment of honest drama or genuinely witty humour catches us completely off guard, because this is one of those resolutely bland Hollywood star machines that bears no resemblance to the real world at all.

In Atlanta, TV fitness guru Jules (Diaz) is about to reveal that she's pregnant by her celebrity dance show partner Evan (Morrison). Meanwhile, Holly and Alex (Lopez and Santoro) are looking into adoption even though they're not sure they're ready; Wendy and Gary (Banks and Falcone) are finally expecting after trying for years, only to be upstaged by Gary's dad (Quaid) and his much younger wife (Decker); and food truck operators Rosie and Marco (Kendrick and Crawford) rekindle their teen romance with unexpected results.

Video - Cameron Diaz Poses With Co-Stars On Red Carpet - "What To Expect" Screening

'What To Expect When Your Expecting' stars Cameron Diaz and Chris Rock arrive at the screening in New York City. They are soon joined by film director Kirk Jones and the three of them pose for photos together to the annoyance of a handful of photographers who just want Cameron on her own.

The 'Shrek' star appears as TV fitness guru Jules in the new film who is excited to start a family. Last month she told InStyle magazine that she may adopt children one day rather than get pregnant. "Society definitely puts pressure on women to make them think their lives should go a certain way", she told the publication

What To Expect When You're Expecting Trailer

What to Expect When You're Expecting is a comic adaptation of the New York Times' bestselling pregnancy advice book of the same name. The film centres around five couples whose lives are turned upside down when they learn of their forthcoming parenthood. Whilst Jules and Evan (a fitness guru and a dance show star, respectively) struggle to fit the demands of pregnancy into a busy showbiz lifestyle, the author Wendy finds herself in a spin when her body is held hostage by her rampant pregnancy hormones. Meanwhile, Wendy's husband Gary finds himself competing with his own father, who is expecting twins with his much-younger partner Skyler.

Carry On Joke Tops One-liner Poll

Monty Python Cameron Diaz Jim Carrey Pink Priscilla Presley Woody Allen

Kenneth Williams' famous quip "Infamy! Infamy! They've all got in for me!" has been named as the funniest line in movie history.

He uttered the words as Julius Caesar in the 1964 film Carry On Cleo.

Coming second in the poll for Sky Movies Comedy, which quizzed 1,000 film fans and critics, is the line "He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy" from the Monty Python film The Life of Brian.

And apparently the third funniest words uttered in a film are the exchange between Robert Hays (Ted Striker) and Leslie Nielsen (Dr Rumack) in the 1980 hit Airplane! After Hays said "Surely you can't be serious" Nielsen quipped back "I am seriousand don't call me Shirley".

Other films with one-liners making it into the poll's top ten are lines from the slapstick comedy films Dumb and Dumber, There's Something About Mary and The Naked Gun.

Top ten comedy lines

1) "Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it in for me!" Kenneth Williams as Julius Caesar Carry on Cleo (1964)

2) "He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy." Terry Jones as Brian's mother - Life Of Brian (1979)

3) "I am serious, and don't call me Shirley." Leslie Nielsen as Dr Rumack - Airplane! (1980)

4) "Remember you're fighting for this woman's honour, which is probably more than she ever did." Groucho Marx as Rufus T Firefly - Duck Soup (1933)

5) "Don't knock masturbation. It's sex with someone I love." Woody Allen as Alvy Singer - Annie Hall (1977)

6) "Do you have a licence for your minkey?" Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau - The Return of the Pink Panther (1975)

7) "Is that, is that hair gel?" Cameron Diaz as Mary Jensen - There's Something About Mary (1998)

8) "Gentlemen, you can't fight in here. This is the War Room." Peter Sellers as President Merkin Muffley - Dr Strangelove (1963)

9) "Nice beaver! Thank you. I just had it stuffed." Leslie Nielsen as Lt Frank Drebin and Priscilla Presley as Jane Spencer - The Naked Gun (1988)

10) "When I met Mary I got that old-fashioned romantic feeling where I'd do anything to bone her." Jim Carrey as Lloyd Christmas - Dumb and Dumber (1994)

Shrek Review

Very Good
Computer animation's "WOW" factor bar has just bumped up another notch. Shrek, a fairy tale of sorts, is the raiser of that bar, giving us a tale that revolves around an ogre who makes candles out of his earwax, a talking donkey who's afraid of the dark, a princess who likes "Piña Coladas and getting caught in the rain," and a "vertically challenged" lord who looks a bit like Disney CEO Michael Eisner.

With WWF-style wrestling, vivid color schemes, a scary ogre who's not that scary, psychological evaluation by a talking donkey, loads of humor, and a simple and straightforward plot, Shrek zings along, providing fun and thrills at every turn. But the real treasure lies in Shrek's ability to subtlety poke fun at the mega-mouse corporation of Disney en route to providing a quick 85 minutes of pure entertainment. Torturing the Gingerbread Man? I'm sold.
