Meryl Streep, Helena Bonham Carter, Carey Mulligan and Anne Marie Duff have joined relatives of Suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst to mark this year’s International Women’s Day. The three actresses were joined by Pankhurst’s great-grand-daughter Helen and great-great-granddaughter Laura as well as director Sarah Gavron, screenwriter Abi Morgan and producers Alison Owen and Faye Ward who are behind the upcoming Suffragette movie.

When The Suffragettes’ indefatigable quest to grant women the vote in the early 20th century came to fruition, history was made. Through hunger strikes, peaceful and non-peaceful protests, force feeding and lobbying, woman in the U.K were finally allowed to participate in democracy.

If there’s one thing that can be said of Meryl Streep, it’s that she’s not an actress who shies away from challenging or controversial roles. So the recent announcement that Streep will be taking on the role of iconic feminist, Emmeline Pankhurst, in Suffragette, a movie which will be adapted from Abi Morgan’s new script, doesn’t come as entirely out of the blue. Streep and Morgan have in fact worked together before, on Morgan’s 2011 biopic The Iron Lady, which saw the legendary screen icon win the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance as recently deceased ex British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher.

Streep and Morgan are obviously a dynamic pair when it comes working on a project together, so it wouldn’t be totally outlandish to predict that Meryl Streep’s latest role could also land her her next Oscar winning performance.

Now this is an interesting tidbit of movie trivia: Conor Oberst has revealed that he auditioned for the lead role in folk music comedy-drama, Inside Llewyn Davis. Although the Coen Brothers eventually cast Oscar Isaac as the titular folk singer, Bright Eyes' singer Conor Oberst was reportedly considered for the role.

"I know I told you this when we met, but I tried out for your role in Inside Llewyn Davis," Oberst told Isaac for Interview magazine. "Thank god for everyone that I didn't get it." Perhaps one of the main reasons Oberst failed to convince the Coen Brothers that he was best suited for the role was because of his non-existent acting C.V. which could have proved risky to take on in such a challenging lead role.

The Coen brothers may have emerged as the new favourites for this year's Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival after their new movie Inside Llewyn Davis received five star reviews across the board, though the filmmakers have shot down reports they are developing a sequel to their cult hit The Big Lebowski.

The 1998 comedy about Jeff Bridges' hippie bowler character 'The Dude' is amongst the Coen's most popular work and Bridges himself has spoken of being open to a sequel. "John Turturro, who wants it, talks to us incessantly about doing a sequel about his (bowler) character Jesus," Ethan Coen said at Cannes this week, "He even has the story worked out, which he's pitched to us a few times, but I can't really remember it. No, I don't see it in our future." If Ethan left the slightest possibility of a sequel, brother Joel shut down door firmly shut, "I don't think it's going to happen ... I just don't like sequels," he said.

The Coen brothers eighth placement in the competition for the prestigious Palme D'Or at the Cannes Film Festival could be their strongest chance since Barton Fink, which won the award in 1991. It's been six years since the filmmakers have been in competition at Cannes though it seems Inside Llewyn Davis could see the brothers back with a bang.

The movie, loosely based on Dave Von Ronk's posthumously published memoir The Mayor of MacDougal Street, follows Oscar Issac as a singer-songwriter who navigates the testing New York folk music scene of the 1960s. The film, boasting an all-star casting including Isaac, Carey Mulligan (The Great Gatsby), Justin Timberlake (The Social Network), Garrett Hudlund (On The Road), Adam Driver (Girls) and John Goodman (Argo), Inside Llewyn Davis appears to have all the attributes of a possible Palme D'Or winner and the Coens appear to have spent time making it the best movie possible. It is believed the brothers could have rushed the film into last year's Oscar season though decided against it. Timberlake has contributed to the movie's soundtrack, as has Mulligan's husband Marcus Mumford and T Bone Burnett, who helped shift 8 million copies of the O Brother, Where Art Thou? score.

This wasn’t in the script. Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic tale of the roaring twenties, The Great Gatsby, was one of the most anticipated movies of the year. With a huge budget, an all-star cast and various exotic filming locations, Gatsby was supposed to be the film of 2013. Hell, it was even supposed to be the movie that won Leonardo Dicaprio that elusive Oscar for best actor. Sure, that could still happen, but it's hugely unlikely.

One Of The Many Visually Impressive Scenes In The Great Gatsby

 There’s no way to avoid the fact that Gatsby has been mauled by the critics. Though some have pointed in the direction of the stunning visuals, it soon became all too clear that Luhrmann forget one key element: Fitzgerald’s classic tale, the best possible material any director could have to work with. “This dreadful film even derogates the artistry of Fitzgerald, who wrote "The Great Gatsby" while living on Long Island and in Europe,” said Joe Morgenstern of the Wall Street Journal. J.R Jones of the Chicago Reader said, “Baz Luhrmann is exactly the wrong person to adapt such a delicately rendered story, and his 3D feature plays like a ghastly Roaring 20s blowout at a sorority house.” R. Kurt Oseland of Slant magazine pondered what could have been, saying, “When The Great Gatsby actually stops to breathe, there is some greatness to be found, however brief it may be.”

In a brand new interview, Brit-actress Carey Mulligan discussed her latest role in Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel The Great Gatsby. In it, she discusses how "daunting" the whole experience of working with Luhrmann and the film's star Leonardo Di Caprio was, and how she always knew that she would be an actor some day.

The rising star explains her in-depth research for the role, including getting to read the letters and diaries of Zelda Fitzgerald and Ginevra King, whom the role of Daisy Buchanan is based. Her emersion into the character didn't end in her research either, as the actress looked the part throughout the film, being dressed in exquisit jewellery throughout filming, something that gave her more attention that she may have anticipated. She said, "There was a man who used to follow me around when I was wearing the Tiffany’s jewellery to make sure I didn’t [steal it] and everytime I made a joke where I’d accidentally drop it down my blouse, he would stare at me with daggers."

The upcoming release of the highly anticipated The Great Gatsby, due to hit theatres on May 10th and the Cannes Film Festival on the 15th, will see Carey Mulligan in what is arguably her first big budget flick. The actress has made a name in cult favorites like Drive and An Education, but the Gatsby experience was a different one altogether, she says in an interview with the Detroit Free Press – not least of all because it personifies the luxury of the Jazz Age.

“To be wearing literally millions of dollars worth of jewelry every day really lends a quality of elegance, in a way. You feel very kind of expensive when you’re walking about. I’ve never experienced anything like it,” says Mulligan, speaking by phone from London. You can definitely see what she means, even by the trailer alone (which you can watch below). But, while the film’s actors and creators are going all out for the adaptation of the so-called Great American Novel, Aussie director Baz Luhrman has also put in every effort to keep the details of Gatsby completely faithful to the reality of the roaring 20s.

“If someone says, ‘There were no rubber zebras in the 1920s!’, then I have photos of girls in the 1920s holding them,” Luhrmann says in an interview with The Star. “Everything in this film, despite what people might say, has a historical reference. We’re research junkies.”

Baz Luhrmann appears to have done it again. The Australian director has long been known for his visually arresting movies, Romeo + Juliet (1996), Moulin Rouge (2001) and Australia (2008) all garnered high praise for aesthetics and his next project The Great Gatsby - easily the most ambitious to date - appears to continue the trend. Firstly we had the trailer - which looked stunning - and now the latest stills from the movie appear to suggest the French filmmaker and F. Scott Fitzgeralds tale of love, power, money and destruct were a match made in heaven.

The first trailer for Joel and Ethan Coen's new movie 'Inside Llewyn Davis' has been released, with Oscar Isaac playing a New York City folk musician who played a prominent role in the Greenwich Village music scene during the early 1960s. Joining Isaac (Drive) in the film is Carey Mulligan (The Great Gatsby), Garrett Hedlund (On The Road), John Goodman (Argo), Adam Driver (Girls) and Justin Timberlake.

The trailer features Bob Dylan's 'Farewell' and sees Davis getting turned away from various Manhattan music venues as he attempts to forge a career in the folk music business. The movie is loosely based on Dave Von Ronk's posthumously published memoir The Mayor of MacDouglal Street. Production began in New York in February 2012, and actor Isaac spoke to the Hollywood Reporter about putting his musical skills to the test. "I've been playing for 20 years, so it was kind of the perfect storm of things that came together for me to be a part of it.We did all the music live, no playback; it's like a concert movie. There's like six or seven songs in it."

Sure we could do with a wood-chipper death, but the Coen Brothers don't appear to be mellowing. The trailer features their usual sharp dialogue and humour - at one point, Llewyn's wife (Mulligan) advises him, "You should be wearing condom on condom and then wrap it in electrical tape."

Jason Clarke may be treading in Jessica Chastain’s shadows when it comes to praise for Zero Dark Thirty but he’s fast being recognised as a rising star in Hollywood. In an interview with Comingsoon.net, the interviewer remarks that on watching another on-screen pairing between Clarke & Chastain (Lawless, which came out before ZD30), he realised that Clarke is one of those actors that’s in tons of movies, but you probably don’t know who he is yet.

With a knowing smirk on his face, Jason Clarke explains how he got involved in Kathryn Bigelow’s controversial movie. “Heard about it going on,” he reveals, “really wanted to be part of it, because you realise it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of something so relevant.” Since the interview took place, Zero Dark Thirty has become embroiled in controversy, over its portrayal of various torture tactics used by the CIA to get information out of their captives. Clarke’s character Dan is an integral part of those powerfully dramatic scenes and we reckon it won’t be long before he starts getting the roles and the recognition that he deserves.

The Aussie actor can be seen later this year in the highly-anticipated and long-delayed version of The Great Gatsby, due out in May. He plays the role of George Wilson, alongside Carey Mulligan, Isla Fisher, Leonardo Dicaprio and Tobey Maguire. Jason Clarke’s light will not be hidden under that bushel for much longer!

Jay Z and his producer The Bullitts are working on the musical score to The Great Gatsby.

And they’d better get a move on because the film’s due out in May, after being delayed to ensure it “reached the largest audience possible,” the BBC reports. The Bullitts tweeted the news the other day, letting the world know that he and his musical companion are busy working on the music for Baz Luhrmann’s glitzy adaptation.

“Jay-Z and myself have been working tirelessly on the score for the upcoming #CLASSIC The Great Gatsby! It is too DOPE for words!” came the tweet. It shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, given that the trailer released for the movie already features Jay Z and Kanye West’s ‘No Church In The Wild.’ There’s been no official word from Jay Z on the matter but we’re excited to hear what he’s created for Luhrmann’s movie.

A Scene From Baz Luhrmann's Forthcoming 3-D Adaptation Of The Great Gatsby

The new trailer for The Great Gatsby has now emerged. Originally, Baz Luhrmann's glitzy take on F Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel was intended for release this month (December 2012) but now it seems that fans will have to wait for the ambitious cinematic venture. This latest peek at the movie, though, suggests that it might just be worth the wait.

Luhrmann's decision to make the movie in 3D confounded many movie buffs who couldn't see the benefit of 3D for a drama of this ilk. Subtlety, though, has never been a major player in Luhrmann's repertoire and this latest trailer is further evidence of his insistence on big, bold and beautiful, for most things that he does. This second look at the movie focuses less on its aesthetic charms though and more on the story. Particularly, the doubtful Nick Carraway, played by Tobey Maguire, is focused on, as is his relationship with the title character, Jay Gatsby - played here by Leonardo Dicaprio. We also get to see a lot of Carey Mulligan, a scene-stealer, by all accounts, as she shimmers in an array of glitzy dresses, dripping with vintage glamour. It might be bold and brash, but Luhrmann has retained the requisite levels of suave here, too.

10. Amber Tamblyn and David Cross

What was the highlight of actress Amber Tamblyn and actor David Cross’ wedding? Well, sadly, even Tamblyn’s stunning gown couldn’t upstage the antics of their unofficial photographer, Questlove. The happy snapper not only DJ’d at the wedding, but also decided to take a number of pics of the happy couple and stick them on his Instagram account. The Roots drummer revealed pretty much everything from the bride’s arrival, to the cutting of the cake, using the hashtag #weddinginthewoods. So, Amber and David – you just about made the grade, but you have your crazy DJ to thank for it.
