Champs - Vamala Album Review

Currently touring in mainland Europe before a run of UK shows, Champs are siblings Michael and David Champion who hail from the Isle of White. Produced by Placebo and Goldfrapp cohort Dimitri Tikovoi, it is the successor to last year's debut release, 'Down Like Gold'.

Champs - Vamala Album Review

Opening with haunting vocals and a similar piano backing, 'Desire' is certainly an accurate representation of a record that is anything but commercial pop.  The melodies here and throughout the album are enchanting though, with 'Running' moving along in a pleasant manner.  'Forever Be Upstanding At The Door' is based on a quaint acoustic guitar piece, while the mid-tempo '3000 Miles' is engrossing from the first listen.  The title track is also worthy of note, whilst 'Blood' shimmers beautifully both in the chiming guitars and shining vocal performance.  It is unlikely that 'Vamala' will receive wide exposure and mainstream success, but anyone who takes the time to investigate the release will find a collection of mature and organic pop songs that are well crafted and enticing.

3.5/5

Champs - Interview

Interview with Champs

After performing separately in different bands, brothers Michael and David Champion came together to form latest pop sensation, Champs. Combining classic melancholy folk sounds with upbeat pop vibes inspired by the likes of R.E.M and The Beatles, Champs provide a fresh and euphoric outlook on the classic genre.

We spoke to David about what it's like to work with family, the Isle of White music scene and recording in Queen Victoria's Osborne house.

CM: Hi David, How are you?
David: Good thanks, good.

Introducing: A 'Champion' New Talent - Champs!

Champs

Brothers Michael and David Champion are certainly right on target to satisfy their namesake as their new band Champs receives praise all round ahead of the release of their debut album.

Champs formed on the Isle Of Wight when the brothers decided to team up after previously being in separate bands. It was a pairing destined to happen with the two having played music together as youngsters, even getting guitar lessons from the same teacher, and of course having the same musical influences such as R.E.M, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and, later, The Beatles and Nirvana. It became a serious project when BBC Radio 2's Dermot O'Leary got wind of their demo track 'St Peters' and invited them on to his show for a session; a circumstance that prompted the recording of their debut album 'Down Like Gold' and their subsequent signing to Play It Again Sam (PIAS) records.

We're sure to hear more of Champs in 2014
