Jack Antonoff of BleachersJack Antonoff continues his Steel Train tradition with 'Terrible Thrills Vol. 2'

The album is rather a companion album to Bleachers' debut album 'Strange Desire', featuring all the best tunes re-worked by stellar artists such as Sia ('Like a River Runs'), Charli XCX ('Rollercoaster') and Carly Rae Jepsen ('Shadow') among others. It's a reward for all the devotion fans have shown to Jack Antonoff and his latest pop project, as well as all his previous work with the likes of Fun. and, of course, Steel Train. 'Terrible Thrills Vol. 2', in fact, follows Steel Train's 2010 remix collection ('Terrible Thrills, Vol. 1') which had appearances the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Tegan and Sara, and Amanda Palmer, not to mention Jack's older sister Rachel Antonoff.

Charli And Jack Do America! Charli XCX And Bleachers To Co-Headline This Summer

Charli XCX Jack Antonoff Bleachers

In what could be one of the most exciting pop team-ups of the year, Charli XCX and Bleachers have announced that they intend to hit the road together on a joint tour over the Summer, hitting the US for their 'Charli and Jack Do America' tour.

Charli XCX promoCharli XCX will be on her own tour this year too

The pair will co-headline the dates with support from up and coming LA musicians BORNS, kicking off in July at San Diego's Observatory North Park and coming to an end mid-August in Columbus, Ohio. It might seem like a random partnership, but Charli and Bleachers' frontman Jack Antonoff's friendship and creative relationship has blossomed since their 'In Ride Sessions' collaboration whereby Charli remixed Bleachers' 'Rollercoaster' and Jack did the same with Charli's 'Break the Rules' in a crazy mash-up.

Charli XCX Labels Music Industry "Uncreative"

Charli XCX

Charli XCX has criticised the modern music industry as being an “uncreative” place where successful musicians are not encouraged to take risks.

The 22 year old British starlet, real name Charlotte Emma Aitchison, scored a huge Number 1 hit in the UK in 2012 with ‘I Love It’, a song she wrote for Icona Pop and to which she supplied guest vocals. It eventually sold in excess of 4.3 million downloads around the world.

Charli XCX - Sucker Album Review

In many ways, Charlotte Aitchison is an atypical twenty first century star-in-the-making: whereas most of those around are trust funded, stage school veterans whose every nuance is airbrushed into bland conformity, both her past and present are rapidly becoming fascinatingly full of risks.

Charli XCX - Sucker Album Review

If Wikipedia is to be believed, Charli XCX began her fledgling career performing in seedy London clubs at just 14 (although, disappointingly, this law-breaking was apparently with the support of her 'rents) but still, it makes for far better reading than a walk on appearance in 'Jack And the Beanstalk' in Dartford. This string of improbability continued via both of her tracks 'Nuclear Seasons' and 'Stay Away' winning single of the week accolades from our bearded competitors, despite neither really pulling up any trees.

Either was a signpost for her debut album, 2013's 'True Romance', on which the destination of travel was competent, if unremarkable, synthpop. It seemed at this point a good bet that the industry machine had taken any rebel spirit and neutered it: how wrong could we have been? 'Sucker' is the sound of a performer upping the ante spectacularly, breaking rules and in the process taking her audience to places that will need plenty of understanding from nonplussed guardians. In short, she's made a pre-teen album for grown ups, and boy, has she done it well.

Charli XCX Says She Feels More Accepted In The U.S.

Ahead of the Grammy Awards on Sunday night, British pop star Charli XCX has spoken about how she feels more accepted in America.

Charli, real name Charlotte Emma Aitchison, is the cover star of this month’s Galore magazine, and said in an interview that finding acceptance in the States has “been easier. I genuinely love being in the US. I’ve always felt more accepted over here which is funny when I come from the UK. But the two places are so different. The UK is where my heart’s at for sure but I do love performing out here.”

Charli XCX - True Romance Album Review

A study by neuroscientists three years ago suggested fourteen was the most likely age to indulge in dangerous activities and behaviours. Which maybe provides an adequate explanation as to the existence of '14', Charli XCX's debut album released five years ago at the aforementioned age which even she herself has since disowned for being little more than a collection of gimmicky dance tracks and terrible MySpace music. However, rather than look back on that experience as a shameful attempt at teenage rebellion, Charlotte Aitchison (for that is her real name) has used the ensuing period to hone her skills as a songwriter and arranger. While entirely a single entity, Aitchison has employed a veritable mix of co-writers, mixers and producers including Vampire Weekend cohort Ariel Rechtshaid, French DJ-cum-studio boffin Dimitri Tikovoi whose credits include The Horrors 'Strange House' and American rapper Brooke Candy. What this means is 'True Romance' encompasses all angles of the pop spectrum across its thirteen pieces, following on from last year's couplet of EPs and mixtapes respectively.

Charli XCX - True Romance Album Review

Indeed, before anyone dismisses her as another pop puppet off the production line conveyor belt, let's not forget her biggest success story to date was actually as a songwriter. Icona Pop's worldwide hit 'I Love It' being penned by Ms Aitchison herself, suggesting she's anything but a flash in the pan with so much more to offer in the future. With 'True Romance', her long-awaited follow-up to '14', she's justified its lengthy creation process; Aitchison first started making the record in 2010. Transgressing boundaries, combining hard hitting beats with choruses to die for and a saccharine encrusted sheen far more engaging than the majority of her peers, 'True Romance' stands aloft as arguably the finest collection of pop songs released by a UK artist so far this year.

Sure, some of the lyrical asides might be a little too sickly for comfort. Take the Lily Allen-meets-Katy B schtick of 'You (Ha Ha Ha)' for example, all youthful exuberance and bravado down to its "'Cause we used to be the cool kids, you were old school, I was on the new s***" refrain. However, there's more than enough here to satisfy one's craving for something edgy yet dynamic in execution. Opener 'Nuclear Seasons' sounds like a continuation of Marina And The Diamonds fun loving persona circa 'Hollywood' while the bouncy 'Grins', Aitchison insisting "I wanna scream and shout!" over a heavily orchestrated concoction of beats and breaks, being the pick of 'True Romance''s thirteen numbers. 'Cloud Aura', which features the Nicki Minaj-alike verses of Brooke Candy goes for the jugular as does 'Black Roses' - think mid-1980s synth pop meets EDM with a drum sound eerily reminiscent of Soft Cell's 'Tainted Love'.
