Charlie Hunnam Isolated Himself For The Lost City Of Z

Charlie Hunnam

Charlie Hunnam plays Fawcett, and says that he related to the man's selfish obsession, abandoning his family for his quest. "It was an extraordinary script," Hunnam says. "It struck me as the best opportunity I'd ever been given, because of the breadth of the story and substance of the story, but also the complexity of this character. There were just certain elements of Fawcett that I had been becoming more and more interested in exploring just in my regular life."

The film was shot over five months in Colombia, and Hunnam initially tried to keep in touch with his girlfriend Morgana McNelis. But the remote location made this impossible, as there wasn't reliable phone or internet. So he decided to write to her a letter a day. But even that proved tricky. "I received a letter from her," he says, "and I realised that from the tone of it and things she was saying that she hadn't received the two letters that I sent before!"

Crimson Peak Review

Weak

Gifted Mexican filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) makes an odd misstep with this overwrought gothic horror thriller, which is so bloated that it's more silly than scary. At least it features a starry cast that has a lot of fun with the characters, providing some emotional undercurrents as things get increasingly crazed. But the truth about this film is that it's a haunted house movie with ghosts that aren't remotely frightening. And worse yet, they're essentially irrelevant to the story.

It's set in late-1800s Buffalo, as young aspiring writer Edith (Mia Wasikowska) is unsure about the romantic advances of her childhood friend Alan (Charlie Hunnam), who is now a hunky doctor. But he fades into the background when the dashing Sir Thomas (Tom Hiddlestone) arrives from England seeking funding from Edith's father (Jim Beaver) for a machine to mine valuable clay from his crumbling ancestral home. As he sweeps Edith off her feet, Thomas' sister Lucille (Jessica Chastain) enters the picture with a clearly nefarious plan of her own. Sure enough, Thomas whisks Edith off to get married and return to the family mansion, a freaky towering wreck that oozes red clay. Or that might be blood. And since Edith has a history of seeing ghosts, the house feels particularly crowded to her.

The spirits are rendered as stretched-out skeletons surrounded by spidery wisps. And in England they're of course blood-red. Oddly, they merely seem to be observers to this story, never actually doing much proper menacing. And since they look faintly ridiculous it isn't easy to muster up the dread required to make this work as a horror movie. Everything else on-screen is just as absurd. The mansion looks more like an elaborately dilapidated over-sized movie set than a neglected manor house. Thankfully, Del Toro packs every scene with witty details and a lurid colour scheme that keeps the audience on its toes.

At the time of the announcement, some speculated that the British actor had been intimidated by the very physical sexual content of the movie, but the ‘Sons of Anarchy’ star revealed to V Man magazine about the real reason why he backed out of the extremely lucrative project. It turns out that he had already committed to another project with his friend Guillermo Del Toro [Crimson Peak], and didn’t want to let him down by accepting two jobs at the same time.

Unlike a lot of the other panels at SDCC this year, Sons of Anarchy was mostly show and very little tell. That is, fans, who snagged a seat in Hall H, got treated to a trailer for the final season, a prequel announcement and some vague teasers of the character arcs for season 7.

Sutter [r] had very few concrete details to reveal at the panel.

SoA will live on after its official end on FX, via a possible prequel (still in early talks) and – here’s something to be excited about – a novelisation, the tentatively titled Bratva. The book will pick up at the end of Season 4, however, creator Kurt Sutter was clear – spinoffs are not on the cards. This isn’t Breaking Bad, after all. According to Sutter, via Deadline, the spinoff route just wouldn’t do justice to Sons of Anarchy.

Fifty Shades Of Grey Diehards Finally Get Full Trailer

Dakota Johnson Jamie Dornan Charlie Hunnam

This is your moment Fifty Shades of Grey fans – the trailer for Sam Taylor-Johnson’s steamy adaptation finally dropped on Thursday. This should ease any doubts about stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan, who both look pretty perfect for their respective roles.

Fifty Shades Of Grey
Story aside, the film looks visually polished.

But more than that, the trailer itself is remarkably tame. Set to a remix of Beyonce’s Crazy in Love (like the teaser from last week) the trailer includes Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey’s meeting and their deepening relationship, but it’s all firmly PG until the final three second. You guessed it, that’s when the crops and blindfolds come out and we’re reminded that this is the Fifty Shades of Grey and not just the latest soapy drama churned out by the Hollywood machine.

However, Hunnam stated he was more concerned with delivering a satisfying end to the series for fans than winning awards. "It doesn't matter at all," he said. "I feel there's this perception that we're upset about it. I really don't give a sh--. I make this for the people who love the show."
