Some of the biggest names in music were among the esteemed guests of the 2015 BET Honors held at the Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C., with Kanye West and Usher Raymond among honorees and Mary J. Blige closing the ceremony with her performance.

Unsurprisingly, it was Kanye West who landed the coveted Visionary Award at the event which he attended alongside his reality star wife Kim Kardashian. While the multi-Platinum rapper may be one of the best modern popstars, having released his sixth consecutive number one album 'Yeezus' two years ago, he's hardly going to win any prizes for modesty. Despite himself, he quipped to the audience upon receiving his award, 'I understand what it is to be humbled for the first time'.

However, Thursday's grand opening of the 19th annual festival came with a sterner note from Mayor Mitch Landrieu who took to his own stage for a press conference to address to issue of gun violence and murdering in the world-famous Crescent City, as reported by Nola.com. Landrieu acknowledged that things had been going well for the city, with recent accolades such as 'the nation's laboratory for change and innovation,' and announced plans for a Sunday morning gathering for New Orleans' mothers who have lost their children to violence, saying "We understand that mothers who have loved and lost are critical in changing the culture of violence and in ending this unacceptable epidemic of young African-American men killing each other," giving early festival attendees for for thought as they prepared to begin their celebration of black musicians, performers and artists.

The Awards were first held in 2001 with the intention of celebrating minorities in the Arts. The Awards this year were hosted by comedian Chris Tucker. Will Smith, Samuel L.Jackson, Queen Latifah and Jamie Foxx have all hosted the Award ceremony in the past.
