Charlize Theron has spoken out on the subject of the media and how she is tired of being pursued and scrutinised by the press at her every turn. The South African-born actress likened the media's feverish interest in her personal life to rape and didn't back down when challenged about the strong comparison she had just made.

"I don't [Google myself] - that's my saving grace," she told Sky News in a video interview as the conversation moved on to her portrayal in the gossip media. "When you start living in that world, and doing that, you start feeling raped," she added sternly.

When quizzed as to whether she meant to use rape as a comparable sentiment, the actress replied: "Well, when it comes to your son and your private life. Maybe it's just me. Some people might relish in all that stuff but there are certain things in my life that I think of as very sacred and I am very protective over them.

"I don't always win that war but as long as I don't have to see that stuff or read that stuff or hear that stuff then I can live with my head in a clear space, which is probably a lot healthier than living in that dark room," Charlize continued.

Theron is currently promoting her latest movie, the Seth Macfarlane comedy A Million Ways To Die In The West, but the Sky interviewer noted that a great deal of the press coverage surrounding the actress had been centred on the length of her skirt or the cut of her tops.

Theron was solemn in her response, saying "I can't be concerned about what some idiot is going to write online about my short skirt, I can only take responsibility for myself." However, she did admit that her life was better for having such a high paid job.

"There is a part of my job that is incredibly lovely - to fly first class to London, to be able to do that with my son and my family and I am definitely not jaded by any of that," she said, adding "My job has made my life incredibly blessed and good and I am very grateful for that, but it does not mean that every aspect of my life all of a sudden becomes fodder for an article.

"I try to protect against that as much as I can."
